Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Man the City is Making

The rain finally stopped.

For the first time in days, the sky above the city was clear, revealing a pale sunrise between the tall buildings.

From the large window of the Golden Phoenix Nightclub office, Li Wei watched the streets below slowly wake up.

Vendors pushed carts along the sidewalks.

Office workers hurried toward the subway.

Taxi horns echoed through the morning air.

Only a week ago, Li Wei had been one of the desperate men searching those same streets for work.

Now he stood several floors above them.

Watching.

Waiting.

Becoming something else.

Behind him, the office door opened.

Zhang Qiang walked in holding two cups of coffee.

"You're awake early," Zhang said, placing one cup on the desk.

Li Wei turned slightly.

"I couldn't sleep."

Zhang leaned against the desk.

"That happens when the city gets inside your head."

Li Wei took the cup and drank quietly.

The bitter taste kept him alert.

Zhang studied him.

"You handled Liu Jian well last night."

Li Wei didn't respond.

But Zhang continued.

"Most new guys panic when someone pulls a knife."

He smirked.

"You didn't even blink."

Li Wei stared at the rising sun through the window.

"In the village," he said slowly, "fear doesn't change anything."

Zhang laughed.

"In the city, fear gets you killed."

Later that afternoon, Li Wei was summoned to Chen Guoqiang's office.

Chen sat calmly behind his desk, reviewing several documents.

The room smelled faintly of tea and tobacco.

When Li Wei entered, Chen gestured for him to sit.

"You're adapting quickly," Chen said.

Li Wei sat down silently.

Chen folded his hands together.

"In this business, loyalty and strength are everything."

He slid a file across the table.

"This district has been quiet for a long time."

Li Wei opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Another nightclub.

Several unfamiliar faces.

"Who are they?" Li Wei asked.

Chen's expression hardened slightly.

"A new group."

"They arrived from the south two months ago."

"Small gang," Chen continued. "But ambitious."

Li Wei studied the pictures.

"They're taking business?"

Chen nodded.

"They've started collecting money from a few of our smaller clubs."

Zhang Qiang, who had been standing by the wall, spoke up.

"Boss, they're testing us."

Chen's eyes turned cold.

"And what happens when someone tests us?"

Zhang grinned.

"We break them."

Chen looked at Li Wei.

"This will be your next job."

Li Wei closed the file.

"What do you want me to do?"

Chen's voice remained calm.

"Tonight they'll be at a place called Red Lantern Bar."

"Go there."

"And remind them whose territory this is."

That night, the Red Lantern Bar buzzed with loud music and flashing lights.

The place was smaller than Golden Phoenix but just as crowded.

Li Wei stepped inside with Zhang Qiang and two other men.

The moment they entered, the room grew slightly quieter.

People noticed them.

Men like Zhang Qiang carried a reputation.

At a corner table sat four unfamiliar men.

Leather jackets.

Cold eyes.

They looked up as Li Wei approached.

One of them smirked.

"Well," he said, leaning back in his chair.

"Chen Guoqiang finally sends someone."

His eyes moved over Li Wei.

"And he sends a farmer?"

Zhang Qiang laughed.

"Careful what you say."

But the man only chuckled.

"We're just doing business."

Li Wei pulled out a chair and sat down calmly across from them.

"This district already has someone doing business."

The man shrugged.

"Things change."

Li Wei leaned forward slightly.

"No."

"They don't."

For a moment, neither side moved.

Then one of the men suddenly flipped the table.

Glasses shattered across the floor.

Chairs scraped loudly as people rushed away from the fight.

The bar erupted into chaos.

The first punch came from the man in the leather jacket.

Li Wei ducked it easily.

His fist struck the man's jaw with brutal force.

The man crashed into another table.

Behind him, Zhang Qiang grabbed another attacker and slammed him into the wall.

Bottles shattered.

Someone screamed.

One of the gang members pulled out a knife.

But Li Wei was faster.

He grabbed a broken bottle from the floor and pressed it against the man's throat.

The sharp glass touched skin.

The man froze.

Li Wei's voice was quiet but deadly.

"This district belongs to Chen Guoqiang."

He pushed the man backward.

"Next time you come here…"

"…you won't walk out."

The remaining men helped their injured friend up.

None of them spoke.

None of them fought again.

They simply left.

The bar slowly returned to life.

But everyone in the room had seen what happened.

And more importantly—

They had seen who made it happen.

Later that night, Chen Guoqiang listened to the report quietly.

When Zhang Qiang finished, Chen smiled.

"The city learns quickly."

He looked toward Li Wei.

"And tonight, the city learned your name."

Li Wei remained silent.

Chen stood and walked to the window.

Outside, the neon lights painted the streets red and gold.

"Power in this city," Chen said softly, "is built step by step."

He turned back toward Li Wei.

"And you've taken several steps already."

Zhang Qiang raised a glass.

"To Li Wei."

Li Wei didn't celebrate.

But deep inside, he could feel something changing.

The weak man who arrived in the city days ago was disappearing.

In his place, a new reputation was being born.

One that would grow larger.

Darker.

And far more dangerous.

And somewhere far away, in a quiet village surrounded by mountains…

Mei Lin still waited for the husband who promised he would return.

She had no idea that the man she loved…

Was slowly becoming someone the entire city would one day fear.
