Once, a very stingy man went to the market looking for the cheapest fish possible. He pointed at a fish and asked the fishmonger, "How much for this rotten fish?"
The fishmonger, offended, replied, "What do you mean rotten? This fish is as fresh as it gets!"
The man didn't say a word. Instead, he leaned down, put his mouth close to the fish's ear, and started whispering. After a few moments, he stood up with a very serious face.
Confused, the fishmonger asked, "Hey brother, what on earth were you whispering to the fish?"
The man sighed and said, "Well, a friend of mine drowned in the sea last week. I was just asking this fish if he had any news about my friend."
The fishmonger, now curious, asked, "And? What did the fish say?"
The man replied, "The fish said he doesn't know anything because he hasn't been to the sea in three months—he's been lying right here on your ice the whole time!"
Chapter 02
An illiterate man noticed that people wearing glasses could read books with great focus. He thought to himself, "Surely, it's the glasses that allow people to read!" So, he went to an eyewear shop and told the shopkeeper, "I want a pair of good reading glasses."
The shopkeeper gave him a pair and handed him a book to test them out. The man took the book, but he couldn't read a single word. He tried on about twenty different pairs of glasses, one after another, but nothing worked.
Finally, he got angry and shouted, "All your glasses are useless! I can't read a single letter with any of them!"
The shopkeeper looked at him closely and noticed that the man was holding the book upside down! He smiled and asked, "My friend, the problem isn't with the glasses. Do you actually know how to read?"
The man replied indignantly, "If I already knew how to read, why on earth would I come here to buy your glasses?"
Chapter 03
A man went to visit his friend at his house. During his stay, he noticed that his friend was speaking to his wife with extreme affection. He kept calling her "Sweetheart," "Darling," "My Love," "Honey," and "Angel."
The man was deeply impressed. When the friend went into the kitchen to make some tea, the man followed him and whispered, "My friend, I am amazed! Even after ten years of marriage, you still use such romantic names for your wife. What's your secret?"
The friend sighed, looked around to make sure his wife wasn't listening, and whispered back, "To be honest, it's not romance. The truth is, I forgot her name about three years ago, and I'm too scared to ask her what it is!"
Chapter 04
There was a boy who liked a girl very much, but he was incredibly shy. One day, he gathered all his courage and walked up to her.
The girl was busy reading a book. The boy started stuttering, "D-do you know? Those glasses of yours make you the m-most beautiful girl in the world."
The girl smiled slightly and said, "Thank you! But I'm not wearing my glasses right now; they are sitting right there on the table."
The boy froze. It turns out, he had forgotten to wear his own glasses and was seeing everything in a blur! Trying to save the moment, he nervously said, "Oh! Actually, I'm the one not wearing my glasses, which is why you looked like an angel. If I put them on, I'd probably realize you're actually a goddess!"
The girl burst out laughing, and that's how a beautiful friendship (and a little something more) began.
Chapter 05
When the city noise fades away and the night turns dead silent, Adib turns on his desk lamp. In his drawer lies a blue envelope that he hasn't opened in five years, yet he stares at it every single night.
Five years ago, on a rainy night, Nilima handed him this letter and said, "Read it when you get home." Adib had laughed and replied, "How about we read it together tomorrow morning?"
But that "tomorrow morning" never arrived in Adib's life. That very night, a tragic road accident took Nilima away forever. Adib still hasn't opened that envelope. He is terrified—scared that the letter might contain something that would drown him in even deeper guilt. Or perhaps it says, "We have such a long way to go," while Adib is now forced to walk that path all alone.
In the depth of the night, when everything is still, Adib feels as if Nilima is sitting in the chair right next to him. He picks up a pen to write something, but the paper always remains blank. Some sorrows are so profound that they can never be captured in words. An illiterate man noticed that people wearing glasses could read books with great focus.
