Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — The Test (Part II)

The arena had gone very quiet.

Not silent—machines hummed softly beneath the floor and the containment barriers crackled faintly with stored energy—but compared to the chaos of the previous hours, the moment felt unnervingly still.

Everyone in the observation room was staring at the same thing.

Mahoraga.

The creature stood in the center of the arena floor exactly where it had been moments earlier. Its pale body remained motionless, the massive blade-arm lowered loosely at its side.

But the wheel behind its shoulders continued to turn.

Slowly.

Patiently.

Click.

Aiden felt the sound more than he heard it.

It was subtle—almost delicate—but somehow it carried across the entire arena like the ticking of a clock counting down to something none of them fully understood.

Across the arena floor, Lucario lowered its stance again.

The Fighting-type Pokémon was breathing steadily, but its posture had changed.

Earlier it had approached the strange opponent like any other battle.

Now it was cautious.

Careful.

Lucario's red eyes locked onto Mahoraga's chest, watching every tiny movement.

Marcus noticed it too.

"Something wrong?" he asked quietly.

Lucario didn't answer.

But its aura sensors were already working overtime.

Whatever energy Mahoraga possessed—it wasn't behaving like a normal Pokémon aura.

In the observation room, Professor Linden was practically glued to the monitor.

"This is remarkable," he whispered.

Dr. Sato shot him a glare.

"That word again?"

"I mean it this time."

"You meant it the last twelve times."

Linden ignored her completely.

"The adaptation rate is accelerating."

Director Vale folded her arms.

"Explain."

Linden gestured toward the data streaming across the screen.

"Normally, a Pokémon adapting to a battle situation takes time—several exchanges, sometimes several minutes. What we're seeing here is something closer to… immediate analysis."

Dr. Sato nodded grimly.

"Lucario's second Force Palm already lost about thirty percent of its impact."

Aiden blinked.

"Wait."

He leaned closer to the glass.

"You're saying Mahoraga already figured out how to reduce the damage?"

Dr. Sato didn't look away from her tablet.

"Yes."

Aiden swallowed.

"That's… bad."

In the arena, Marcus rolled his shoulders slightly.

"Alright," he said calmly.

"Lucario."

The Pokémon's ears flicked toward him.

"Switch tactics."

Lucario nodded once.

The air around its fists began to shimmer.

"Use Aura Sphere."

Lucario brought its paws together.

Blue energy gathered between them instantly, forming a spinning sphere of condensed aura energy.

Aiden leaned forward slightly.

"That move never misses, right?"

Professor Linden nodded.

"Correct."

Lucario launched the attack.

The glowing sphere shot across the arena like a meteor.

Mahoraga didn't dodge.

The Aura Sphere slammed directly into its chest.

The explosion echoed through the arena with a deep crack of energy dispersing against the containment barrier.

For a moment Mahoraga disappeared behind a cloud of blue light.

The wheel turned.

Click.

When the light cleared, Mahoraga was still standing.

Lucario blinked.

The damage had been minimal.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"Again."

Lucario fired another Aura Sphere.

The second sphere struck Mahoraga's shoulder.

The energy dispersed even faster this time.

The wheel rotated.

Click.

Dr. Sato stared at the data.

"That's impossible."

Professor Linden leaned closer.

"The resistance curve is doubling."

Director Vale spoke quietly.

"How long before it nullifies the attack entirely?"

Dr. Sato hesitated.

"…two more exposures."

Aiden looked down at the Poké Ball in his hand.

Mahoraga hadn't even attacked yet.

Across the arena, Lucario clearly understood something was wrong.

Its stance changed again.

More defensive now.

Mahoraga slowly tilted its head.

Watching.

Studying.

Then it moved.

The motion was smooth—almost elegant.

Mahoraga stepped forward.

Lucario reacted instantly.

"Counter!" Marcus commanded.

Lucario dashed in.

Its paw glowed with concentrated aura energy as it launched another Force Palm.

Mahoraga raised its blade-arm.

The two attacks collided.

The shockwave blasted dust across the arena floor.

Lucario skidded backward several feet.

Mahoraga didn't move.

The wheel rotated again.

Click.

Marcus frowned.

"That shouldn't have happened."

Lucario shook its arm slightly.

The impact had felt wrong.

Not painful.

Just… ineffective.

Mahoraga slowly lifted its blade-arm again.

Aiden felt a strange tension in the air.

Like the moment before lightning strikes.

Mahoraga swung.

The blade cut through empty air.

Lucario dodged easily.

But something strange happened.

A pulse of energy followed the swing.

The shockwave curved mid-air.

Lucario's eyes widened.

The attack struck its side.

Lucario tumbled across the arena floor before landing in a crouch.

Marcus blinked.

"…Did that just adjust trajectory?"

Professor Linden's voice rose in disbelief.

"It adapted its own attack."

Dr. Sato looked up sharply.

"That's not possible."

Aiden stared at the arena.

"You said it adapts to attacks."

"Yes," Sato said slowly.

"Not that it modifies its own."

The wheel rotated again.

Click.

Lucario stood again.

This time it didn't rush in.

Instead it began circling Mahoraga slowly.

Mahoraga followed its movement with its head.

Like a predator studying prey.

Aiden felt something strange again.

Not aggression.

Focus.

Marcus raised a hand.

"Lucario."

The Pokémon glanced at him.

"Full power."

Lucario's aura flared.

The energy around its body intensified rapidly.

"Use Close Combat."

Lucario launched forward.

Its speed doubled instantly.

It struck Mahoraga with a flurry of punches so fast the impacts sounded like thunder.

Each hit landed with crushing force.

The arena floor cracked beneath them.

For a moment, Mahoraga was pushed backward.

Aiden's eyes widened.

"It's working!"

Then the wheel turned.

Click.

The next punch hit weaker.

The next weaker still.

By the final strike, Lucario's fist barely moved Mahoraga at all.

Lucario jumped backward, breathing hard.

Mahoraga straightened slowly.

The creature lifted its blade-arm once more.

Lucario prepared to dodge.

Mahoraga swung.

The blade missed.

But the shockwave didn't.

This time the energy curved sharply through the air.

Lucario leapt to the side.

The attack curved again.

It struck Lucario square in the chest.

Lucario hit the arena wall and slid to the ground.

Marcus immediately raised a hand.

"Stop the match!"

The arena lights flashed yellow.

Mahoraga froze instantly.

Lucario struggled to stand but Marcus recalled it into its Poké Ball before it could continue.

Silence filled the arena.

The wheel rotated once more.

Click.

Then it stopped.

Mahoraga looked up toward the observation room.

Directly at Aiden.

Aiden felt his chest tighten again.

It wasn't threatening.

It wasn't angry.

It was waiting.

Professor Linden spoke first.

His voice trembled slightly.

"It adapted defensively."

Dr. Sato added quietly.

"And offensively."

Director Vale watched Mahoraga carefully.

Then she said the words none of them wanted to hear.

"If that ability continues improving…"

She paused.

"…there may not be a Pokémon alive that can defeat it in a prolonged battle."

Aiden looked down at the Poké Ball again.

Then back at Mahoraga.

The creature stood calmly in the arena.

Waiting for its trainer.

And for the first time since the test began—

Aiden realized something terrifying.

Mahoraga had barely tried.
