Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — The Silence That Answered Everything

The hallway outside the VIP room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Moments earlier Ethan had been shouting, demanding to be let inside, furious that the guards dared to stop him.

Now he stood there stiffly, his anger fading into something far less comfortable.

Unease.

Declan McKenna's presence had a way of doing that.

The music from the club filtered faintly down the corridor, a distant pulse of bass and laughter that seemed to belong to another world.

Inside the VIP room behind Declan, the lights were dim and calm.

Stephanie stood a few steps away from them both.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Declan's gaze settled on Ethan, calm and unreadable.

"Do you know what you did wrong tonight?"

The question landed like a stone.

Ethan hesitated.

His shoulders tensed slightly.

He knew that tone.

It was the same one Declan used during family meetings, the one that made grown executives suddenly careful with their words.

But this wasn't a boardroom.

This was a nightclub hallway.

And yet the pressure felt exactly the same.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Ethan muttered.

Declan raised an eyebrow slightly.

"No?"

Ethan exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair.

"It was just a stupid party game."

Stephanie's fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her purse.

Images flashed through her mind without warning.

The bottle spinning across the glass table.

The loud cheers from Ethan's friends.

The girl leaning against him with a teasing smile.

And Ethan—

laughing.

Accepting the dare without hesitation.

Then leaning down and kissing the girl while everyone watched.

Everyone except Stephanie.

Because in that moment she had been staring at the floor.

Trying to pretend it didn't matter.

Trying not to cry in front of them.

The memory still burned in her chest.

Back in the hallway Ethan finally glanced toward her.

Their eyes met.

For two years, moments like this had always been simple.

Stephanie would step forward.

She would smooth things over.

She would explain that Ethan didn't mean anything by it.

She would defend him.

He had grown used to that.

So now he looked at her again.

Silently asking for help.

Say something.

Tell him it was just a game.

Explain it.

Stephanie held his gaze for one quiet second.

Then she looked away.

Completely ignoring him.

The silence that followed was louder than any argument.

Ethan blinked in surprise.

He hadn't expected that.

Behind him, two of his friends shifted awkwardly, pretending not to notice.

Declan noticed everything.

But he said nothing.

Stephanie turned.

And began walking toward the main club.

Her heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she moved down the hallway.

The sound echoed behind her.

Ethan frowned.

"Stephanie."

She didn't stop.

She didn't even turn around.

The music grew louder as she stepped back into the main room.

Lights flashed across the crowded dance floor.

The VIP table came back into view.

Her bag was still resting on the seat where she had left it earlier.

The same seat where she had sat while Ethan kissed another girl.

The laughter from that moment seemed to echo faintly in her mind.

Stephanie walked to the table and reached for the bag.

The people sitting there immediately fell quiet.

A few of them glanced at her nervously.

The girl Ethan had kissed earlier was still there.

She quickly looked away, pretending to check her phone.

No one spoke.

No one apologised.

Stephanie didn't expect them to.

She slipped the strap of her bag over her shoulder.

Behind her, a large figure stopped a short distance away.

One of Declan's bodyguards.

Stephanie noticed him immediately.

He wasn't standing close enough to intrude.

But close enough to watch.

Their eyes met briefly.

He gave a small, respectful nod.

Stephanie didn't ask why he was there.

Right now she didn't have the energy for questions.

She simply turned toward the exit.

Back in the hallway, Ethan had finally lost patience.

"I'm going after her."

He stepped forward.

But before he could pass—

Declan moved.

The motion was subtle.

Yet completely deliberate.

He stepped directly into Ethan's path.

Blocking him.

Ethan stopped immediately.

His irritation returned instantly.

"Move."

Declan didn't.

"She's my girlfriend," Ethan added sharply.

Declan tilted his head slightly.

"Is she?"

The simple question caught Ethan off guard.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Declan's expression remained calm.

"You seemed very comfortable letting her handle herself earlier."

Ethan clenched his jaw.

"That was just a dare."

Declan's gaze remained steady.

"Yes."

A brief pause followed.

"And whose dare was it when she walked across the room to find a stranger?"

Ethan opened his mouth—

Then stopped.

For a moment he didn't answer.

Because the truth was obvious.

Everyone had been watching.

Everyone had been waiting for her to fail.

Waiting for her to be rejected.

Even Ethan.

Declan continued quietly,

"You watched."

Ethan's fists tightened.

"I didn't think she'd actually do it."

Declan studied him silently.

"That is precisely the problem."

Ethan exhaled sharply.

"I just want to talk to her."

Declan didn't move.

"If she wishes to speak with you, she will."

"And if she doesn't?"

Declan's answer was immediate.

"Then you will respect that."

Ethan's patience snapped.

"She's my girlfriend!"

Declan's gaze hardened slightly.

"For now."

The words hit harder than Ethan expected.

His anger faltered again.

Meanwhile, in the club, Stephanie had reached the entrance.

The cold night air rushed in when the door opened.

She stepped outside.

The city lights of Neraya glittered in the distance.

The noise of Velvet Eclipse faded slightly behind her.

For the first time all night, she could breathe properly.

The bodyguard stopped a respectful distance away.

Watching.

Not interfering.

Stephanie wrapped her arms lightly around herself.

She had imagined her eighteenth birthday very differently.

Not like this.

Not ending with humiliation.

And certainly not ending with a stranger's kiss still lingering on her lips.

Back inside, Ethan heard the club door open.

He instinctively turned toward the sound.

"She's leaving."

Declan remained standing in front of him.

Blocking the hallway.

For the first time that night, Ethan realised something unsettling.

He wasn't in control anymore.

And just as that thought settled in his mind—

The door to the VIP room behind them slowly opened.
