Chapter 1 - The Alpha’s Instinct

Chapter 2

Kael Vaughn felt it before he heard it.

The moment the power awakened, every instinct inside him snapped to attention.

He froze mid-step in the forest.

A violent surge of energy ripped through the night air, sending a tremor through the ground beneath his boots.

Inside his mind, his wolf roared.

Power.

Ancient.

Dangerous.

Wrong.

Kael slowly lifted his head, scanning the dark forest surrounding him. Towering trees stood motionless beneath the pale silver moon, but the air itself felt charged—vibrating with something unnatural.

Then it came again.

Another pulse.

Stronger.

The ground trembled.

Kael's jaw tightened.

There was only one thing in the supernatural world capable of releasing power like that.

The Fifth Blood.

For centuries it had been nothing more than a legend whispered among the ruling bloodlines. A prophecy hidden in ancient records. A warning passed from one Alpha to the next.

If the Fifth Blood ever awakened, the balance of power would collapse.

War would follow.

Kael had spent his entire life protecting that balance.

And now the prophecy had just become real.

Behind him, the forest suddenly stirred.

Branches rustled as several figures emerged from the shadows.

Members of his pack.

Ryder, his Beta, stepped forward first.

"You felt that too," Ryder said quietly.

Kael didn't answer right away.

His gaze had shifted toward the distant glow of lights beyond the forest.

The human town at the edge of their territory.

That was where the power had come from.

And it was growing stronger.

"Yes," Kael finally said.

His voice was low.

Dangerously calm.

Ryder crossed his arms.

"That wasn't normal wolf energy."

"No."

Kael's golden eyes hardened.

"That was bloodline power."

A tense silence settled over the group.

One of the younger wolves shifted uneasily.

"You think it's… the prophecy?"

Kael didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

They all knew the stories.

Four bloodlines ruled the supernatural world.

The Wolf.

The Vampire.

The Witch.

The Fae.

Each governed their own territories, their own power.

But hidden beneath centuries of history was another name.

One erased from records.

The Fifth Blood.

A bloodline so powerful the others had tried to erase its existence entirely.

Ryder exhaled slowly.

"If the council hears about this…"

"They will," Kael interrupted.

The council always knew.

And when they did, they would send hunters.

Hunters whose only mission was simple.

Kill the Fifth Blood before it became powerful enough to threaten them.

Kael's gaze returned to the distant lights of the town.

Another surge of power rippled through the night.

Closer.

Stronger.

His wolf stirred violently inside him.

But not with fear.

With something else.

Something far more unsettling.

A pull.

Like an invisible thread had wrapped around his chest and was dragging him toward the source.

Kael frowned.

That shouldn't be possible.

He had hunted supernatural threats his entire life. His instincts were sharp, controlled.

But this felt different.

Wrong.

His wolf growled again.

Mine.

Kael's body went completely still.

"What did you say?" Ryder asked.

Kael hadn't realized he had spoken out loud.

"Nothing."

But his wolf refused to quiet.

The pull grew stronger.

It was no longer a faint sensation.

It was a command.

Go.

Now.

Ryder studied him carefully.

"Alpha?"

Kael clenched his jaw.

"Something is happening in that town."

"You want to investigate?"

"Yes."

Ryder nodded.

"I'll bring the pack."

"No."

The word came immediately.

Too fast.

Ryder raised an eyebrow.

"You're going alone?"

Kael hesitated.

His instincts were screaming.

But not the kind that warned of danger.

The kind that demanded he move.

Now.

"Yes," Kael said finally.

"This could be a trap," Ryder warned.

Kael's expression hardened.

"Then whoever set it is about to regret it."

Without another word, he stepped forward.

The moment his foot touched the edge of the clearing, his bones shifted.

The transformation was instant.

Muscles expanded.

Bones cracked and reformed.

Within seconds, a massive black wolf stood where the Alpha had been.

Kael's golden eyes burned beneath the moonlight.

Then he ran.

The forest blurred around him as he sprinted toward the human town. Wind roared past his ears, carrying the scent of rain, pine—

And something else.

Blood.

Kael slowed.

His wolf lifted its nose.

There it was again.

That strange pull.

Stronger now.

Closer.

The scent twisted through his senses.

Not wolf.

Not human.

Something entirely different.

His wolf growled deep in his chest.

Mine.

Kael pushed harder, bursting through the final line of trees at the edge of town.

Lights glowed ahead.

A small house stood at the end of a narrow street.

Its windows were shattered.

The front door hung open.

Power rolled from the building in violent waves.

Kael's instincts screamed.

Danger.

Blood.

Power.

And something else.

Something that made his chest tighten.

He shifted back into human form just outside the door, barely noticing the cold rain soaking his skin.

Inside the house, voices echoed.

Male.

Hostile.

Hunters.

Kael stepped forward silently.

Then the air inside the house exploded with energy.

Glass shattered.

Wind howled through the rooms.

And suddenly he felt it.

The bond.

It slammed into him like lightning.

Kael staggered.

His wolf went completely still.

For one terrifying second, he couldn't breathe.

Because standing in the center of the ruined kitchen—

silver light glowing beneath her skin—

was a young woman.

And the moment Kael Vaughn looked into her frightened eyes, his wolf spoke a single word inside his mind.

Mate.

Kael's blood ran cold.

No.

That was impossible.

His gaze dropped to the silver light pulsing through her veins.

Recognition struck him like a blade through the chest.

The Fifth Blood.

His mate.

The most dangerous bloodline in existence.

And standing between them—

were hunters.

One of them slowly turned toward the doorway.

Then he smiled.

"Well," the hunter said calmly.

"Looks like the Alpha finally arrived."

He lifted a blade toward Ariana's throat.

Kael's wolf exploded with fury.

And the hunter whispered one final sentence.

"If you take one more step…"

The blade pressed closer to her skin.

"…she dies."
