Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Echoes After the Bell

The final bell rang across Crescent High with a long metallic echo.

Students immediately burst out of their classrooms like a wave breaking through the halls. Lockers slammed, laughter filled the corridors, and footsteps echoed against the polished floors.

Haruto stayed seated for a moment.

His eyes drifted toward the classroom door.

For the entire day, he couldn't shake the strange feeling that had followed him since morning—the same feeling that something in this school was watching him.

Not a person.

Something else.

"Hey."

A voice snapped him out of his thoughts.

Haruto looked up to see Riku Tanaka leaning against the desk in front of him, spinning a pen between his fingers.

"You're zoning out again," Riku said. "First day and you already look like you're haunted."

Haruto let out a quiet sigh.

"Just tired."

Riku grinned.

"Or maybe the famous Crescent High ghost stories already got to you."

Haruto rolled his eyes slightly, but something about that comment made the hairs on the back of his neck rise.

"Ghost stories?" he asked.

Riku immediately leaned forward like he had been waiting for that question.

"Oh, there are tons of them," he said excitedly. "Every old school has rumors, but Crescent High… this place is on another level."

Haruto closed his notebook slowly.

"Like what?"

Before Riku could answer, another voice joined them.

"You shouldn't scare the new student."

Both boys turned.

A girl stood beside the classroom door, her long black hair falling softly over her shoulders. Her expression was calm, but her eyes carried a quiet seriousness.

It was Aiko.

She had barely spoken during class, but Haruto had noticed her a few times.

Something about her presence felt… different.

Riku scratched the back of his head sheepishly.

"I'm not scaring him. I'm just educating him."

Aiko crossed her arms.

"You call rumors education?"

Riku shrugged.

"Half the rumors here turn out to be true."

Haruto looked between them.

"Okay… now I'm curious."

Riku grinned again.

"Perfect. Then listen carefully."

He lowered his voice dramatically.

"Every year, some students say they hear whispers in the old hallway."

Haruto's eyes narrowed slightly.

"The old hallway?"

Riku nodded.

"The east wing. The part of the building that was closed years ago."

Aiko's expression darkened slightly.

"Riku."

But he ignored the warning.

"They say if you walk there after sunset," Riku continued, "you'll hear someone calling your name."

For a split second, Haruto's heart skipped.

The whisper from earlier that day suddenly returned to his mind.

"…Haruto…"

He quickly pushed the thought away.

"That sounds like a prank," he said.

"Maybe," Riku admitted.

"But there's one problem."

Haruto waited.

Riku's grin slowly faded.

"Some students who heard the whispers… transferred schools soon after."

Silence filled the classroom.

Aiko finally stepped forward.

"That rumor started years ago," she said quietly. "No one actually knows if it's real."

Riku shrugged.

"Still creepy though."

Haruto stood up and grabbed his bag.

"Well, I guess I'll just avoid the east wing."

Riku laughed.

"Good luck with that."

Haruto raised an eyebrow.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Riku pointed toward the hallway.

"Because the library is there."

Haruto sighed.

"Of course it is."

The sky had begun turning orange when Haruto left the classroom.

Most students were already gone.

The halls felt strangely quiet now.

Almost too quiet.

Riku walked beside him, still talking about random things like clubs and teachers.

Aiko followed a few steps behind.

"Here it is," Riku said as they reached a large hallway.

The lights flickered slightly above them.

A faded sign hung from the ceiling.

EAST WING

Haruto stared down the corridor.

The hallway stretched farther than the others, the windows letting in faint golden light from the setting sun.

But something about it felt… heavier.

Like the air itself carried a strange weight.

"You coming?" Riku asked.

Haruto nodded and stepped forward.

Their footsteps echoed softly against the floor.

The deeper they walked into the wing, the quieter everything became.

Even Riku eventually stopped talking.

Aiko suddenly slowed her pace.

"Wait."

Both boys turned.

"What?" Riku asked.

Aiko pointed toward the end of the hallway.

"There."

Haruto followed her gaze.

At the far end of the corridor stood an old classroom door.

Unlike the others, it looked worn.

The wood was darker, scratched by years of use.

And for some reason…

It was slightly open.

Riku frowned.

"That's weird."

Haruto felt a strange chill crawl up his spine.

"Why?"

"That room's supposed to be locked," Riku said.

Aiko's expression tightened.

"No one uses it anymore."

Haruto stepped closer.

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

"Maybe a teacher forgot," he said.

But even as he said it, the explanation didn't feel right.

The door slowly creaked.

Not because someone pushed it.

But because the wind from the open window nearby moved it just slightly.

Creeeaaak.

The sound echoed through the empty hallway.

Riku swallowed.

"Okay… that's definitely creepy."

Haruto reached the door.

He hesitated for a moment.

Then slowly pushed it open.

The classroom inside was dark.

Dust floated in the fading sunlight.

Old desks sat scattered around the room.

And on the chalkboard…

There was writing.

Fresh writing.

Haruto stepped closer.

The words were written in white chalk.

Just two simple words.

HELP ME

Riku froze behind him.

"What the hell…"

Aiko's eyes widened.

"That wasn't there yesterday."

Haruto stared at the message.

Something about the handwriting felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Suddenly—

The classroom lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then turned off completely.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Riku panicked.

"Okay nope, I'm done. We're leaving."

But before anyone could move—

A whisper filled the air.

Soft.

Close.

Right beside Haruto's ear.

"…you came back…"

Haruto's entire body went still.

His heart pounded violently in his chest.

Slowly… very slowly…

He turned around.

But the room was empty.

Completely empty.

Yet the voice had been real.

And somehow…

It sounded like it knew him.

Outside the classroom, the hallway lights flickered again.

Aiko grabbed Haruto's arm.

"We should leave."

Haruto nodded silently.

Something was definitely wrong with Crescent High.

And deep down…

He had the terrifying feeling that whatever haunted this place…

Had been waiting for him.
