Chapter 8 - Talking with Sona

Kuoh Academy

I had the highest grades in the class.

I feel like I'm getting closer to Koneko.

Her usually emotionless face sometimes shows expressions now, at least, and she's started talking more.

I was leaning against a wall in the corridor.

While Tsubaki was on patrol, she came up to me: "Hello, Arthur-kun. I'm Tsubaki Shinra."

She was a beautiful girl with glasses and long hair.

"Nice to meet you, Tsubaki. How can I help you?"

Tsubaki: "Kaichou Sona is calling you to the student council room. There's something she wants to talk to you about."

"Let's go. As long as it's not a love confession, that'd be great."

Tsubaki giggled: "You're quite the comedian. I thought you were a quiet type since you hang out with Koneko. You two spend a lot of time together on the rooftop."

"She reminds me of a cat, after all, her name even has 'neko' in it. It isnt suprise that she became the school mascot."

We arrived in front of the door with Tsubaki.

She knocked: "She is waiting for you inside. She wants to talk to you alone."

"Come in," a voice called, and I entered.

Sona was sitting across from a chessboard: "Would you sit down, Arthur-kun? I want to talk to you about something."

"Sure. Are we going to play chess?"

I sat opposite her.

She made the first move: "Yes, and while we do, I'd like to ask you a few questions. Whether you answer or not is up to you."

"Go ahead, I'm listening."

"Would you like to talk about the accident that happened when you were 9?" she asked.

I looked into her eyes: "A storm destroyed our street. It was even in the Italian media. Why are you asking?"

"Because that's not what really happened, is it? I'll be direct. I was asked to investigate you. You've hidden yourself very well, but you couldn't completely hide your childhood."

I stayed silent for a moment: "What do you mean?"

"You know about the supernatural world, don't you?" she said.

This girl was pushing too far, and it was getting on my nerves: "Yes, I had the chance to experience it at an early age. It wasn't a good experience."

She adjusted her glasses: "Even if you approach it with jokes, I'm sure it was traumatic. The reason I'm telling you this is that I'm a devil. I suppose you know about the peerage system. By the way, you should hide your Devil Net account a bit better."

"No one's ever stalked me on social media before. Besides, I know about peerage. But to me, it's just slavery — unless you do it willingly, of course. But I'm not thinking of joining yours."

Check.

Sona looked like she was sweating: "Then you're also aware that there are devils in this school, right?"

"Of course. I know about Rias Gremory and her peerage. Devil Net is a really excellent research tool," I said.

Sona put her hand to her forehead: "Damn media… so you already knew about me too. Then what was the reason you transferred to this school? Were you perhaps planning to hunt us or something?"

"Of course not. If you really want to find something about me on Devil Net, search for news related to 'Hunter.' You'll see me."

Her eyes widened: "That was you? But that news is from 5 years ago!"

"Since I was 9, I've been hunting. I can work for you, too. Just pay me enough. But I'm neither your slave nor anything else," I said.

Sona sighed.

Because I killed a priest in the Vatican.

dropped from the ceiling and blew a priest's head off.

They made a news report about it, because people saw me, but nobody remembered my face.

They gave me the nickname "Hunter."

No matter who it was, I never left traces behind.

I stood up: "This game ends here."

"What?" Sona looked up — she was really checkmated…

"I'm not planning to marry you, so don't come at me with that," I said, walked out the door, and returned to my classroom.

I'm sure Rias will hear about this soon, and my hidden identity doesn't matter anymore.

Anyway, with canon about to start, keeping it secret would affect my relationships, and I think it would be good to explain the truth to Koneko.

I don't want to step on Sirzechs's toes.

As long as I don't attack Rias and her peerage, he wouldn't attack me.

Because if he moves, it means either the possible end of the world or massive destruction.

I don't think he wants to deal with paperwork…
