Chapter 27 - Not Meant to Die

Jason nodded and turned toward the bulgasari who was eating a shield that someone dropped.

'Time to kill something that wasn't meant to die.' Jason thought to himself.

The beast let out a loud roar and started to charge forward bulldozing some of the students out of the way. People were flying in the air as the beast slammed into the wall shaking the entire room. The bulgasari stepped away from the wall and turned around. Jason realized that this was his chance and moved forward through the crowd of people. He ignited his hands on fire and jumped into the air and grabbed the front left leg. He pressed his hand on the body of the beast and forced the flame onto the bulgasari to weaken the shell. He jumped away from the beast as Sophia saw the opening. She punched the weakened shell and broke it into pieces.

The bulgasari roared and moved in the direction of a guy who was alone. His legs were shaking and his eyes were opened wide in sheer terror. Jason started to run and grabbed the guy's spear from him and pushed him out of the way of the bulgasari's charge. Jason jumped and used the last of his mana and ignited the spear on fire and threw it at the newly made weak spot in the bulgasari's shell. The spear went in and for the first time, actual blood spilled from the beast and splattered the ground.

Jason fell back down onto the ground and fell to his knees. He was exhausted but a massive grin was evident on his face. It was wounded. Blood spilled from it. 'If it can bleed, it can die,' Jason thought. 'The spear is where it needs to be but it isn't deep enough to do what it needs to do. We need someone to push it in further.'

"Sophia," she looked at him with a tense expression. She was not happy about something. "I need you to push the spear in deeper. That should trigger massive damage if not outright kill it."

"Fine but after today, we're going to talk." She said back as she started running toward the side of the bulgasari. She jumped and grabbed the spear and gave it a strong push. The spear pierced deeply into the flesh of the bulgasari and pierced its heart. The beast roared in anger as it shook violently. It's tiger like claws slammed onto the ground repeatedly causing everyone to lose their balance.

Jason looked around him and saw a glaive that someone dropped nearby. He picked it up and used it to balance himself on his feet. The bulgasari turned toward Jason and started to charge. It swung its trunk and Jason started flying in the air. A winged blessed grabbed him and threw him in the direction of the bulgasari. Jason aimed the glaive and threw it with all his remaining might. The glaive pierced the bulgasari in the eye

It shook its massive size from one side of the room to another before finally collapsing. The beast was dead.

Cheering echoed across the room as the beast lay still on the floor. Killing such a beast was in fact a remarkable achievement yet some were unable to celebrate with the others because they were unconscious. Jason slumped to the ground exhausted. He rested on one knee with his held up gasping for air. He knew from running too much that this was the second best way to recover from lack of air. The best way was to stand up with his arms behind his head but he didn't have the energy to stand.

Professor Mathilda clapped her hands gathering the attention of everyone. "You managed to kill it. Impressive but not exactly surprising due to a single individual." She looked at Sophia. "Yet I'm surprised that you held back. It allowed me to analyze the current state of this years students. And I must say, we have a couple of you that may be worth something." She looked at Jason. "However each and every single one of you have a long way to go before you become capable of properly fighting anything in the future. So this class was designed to prepare you for threats that you may or may not face. Welcome to combat training 101 where I get the privilege of beating you kids down as much as I want however I want." A beautiful yet haunting smile appeared on her angelic face.

The students began to shiver in fear as cold sweat appeared on their faces. Jason and Sophia were not scared in the slightest. Sophia was bored as if this whole thing was beneath her and Jason was excited at the prospect of fighting more enemies. Not only could he gain more experience from fighting, he also gains insight on potential enemies and their weaknesses. He couldn't stop the grin from appearing on his face.

Sophia turned her head and looked at him with a cold look. It was a look that made Jason shiver briefly. 'What did I do to her?' He asked himself.

Professor Mathilda continued her lecture. "Until you all become someone worth teaching, I am going to break you all down and rebuild you piece by piece until a warrior stands before me. Currently, only one of you fits that description." She looked at Sophia with a smile. "Sophia here was more than capable of handling the bulgasari from earlier alone using nothing but raw physical force. Also the bulgasari itself was in a weakened state to begin with." The students began to shout in disbelief.

"You mean it was actually stronger?"

"Did we have a chance at all?"

"No way."

"She actually nerfed that thing?"

"Quiet!" Professor Mathilda raised her voice to regain order in front of the panicking students. "Yes I limited the bulgasari to being a peak c rank beast to test you students on where your current strength is and what is needed to increase your growth. However, a normal bulgasari that was just born is a low b rank. An adult that you faced would have been an s ranked monster with the potential of being a mythic class calamity."

The words flowed from Professor Mathilda into the skulls of the students. They struggled to process this information. A beast with potential to be a mythical ranked calamity? That's absurd. Impossible. Only mythical legends can possibly defeat one and even then, it would be a fight that could destroy a city. Fear was clearly evident in the students faces. They don't even want to imagine what a calamity class beast was capable of.

"Now that the bell is about to ring, can I see Jason, Sophia, Isabelle, Adam, and Susan. The rest of you may go and do whatever it is you want to do. Classes are over for the day."

The five students she called out walked up to her while the rest of the class walked out of the training hall. "Each of you shows promise. Sophia you are far ahead of your peers in both strength and intelligence." She looked at the harpy. "Susan, you used your blessing to assist others and move them out of the way of harm rather than focus on attacking an enemy you couldn't beat." She looked at Isabelle. "Isabelle, you helped the others recover faster with your blessing. Once they were out of harms way, you healed them so they could continue the fight. Adam, you threw that spear with such precision that even I felt threatened by its accuracy." She then looked at Jason. "Jason you were the one who issued orders in a state of crisis. You created weak points so they could be exploited by the others. Well done all of you. I enlist a select group of individuals every year for what we teachers call extra credit. I would like to extend the invitation to all of you soon enough. Until then enjoy your weekend and also good luck on your fight Jason. I suggest you recover first but you don't have much time."

"Professor Mathilda. What fight?" Jason asked confused.

"Look at your watch."

Jason pressed his watch and was surprised at what he saw.

Anthony has challenged Jason to a duel. The fight will take place at the coliseum at 1730. The duel has been approved by Professor Invidia.

"What the hell?"
