Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: Fate

The mermaid awoke, with a small yawn; for once in a long time she didn't have a dream of her ideal mate nor any dreams of the baby that she so longed for. She sighed and stretched as she had an off day today, another teacher would be teaching the guppies, letting her do whatever she wanted. The mermaid slowly began to swim out of her grotto and into the city, soon gathering some ingredients for her breakfast; her mind was still not fully awake just yet as she nodded politely at several merfolk. "Be careful today young one, especially if you decide to use your legs," an elder said kindly and offered the mermaid a kind smile.

"Why," the mermaid asked sleepily and yawned but still smiled at the elder, as she gathered a variety of kelp. "Rumor is that there is more human activity near the islands. But of course, it could be nothing," the elder explained and smiled as she swam away as finished gathering her various types of kelp and swam away. The mermaid nodded and continued gathering various types of kelp before soon snagging a mackerel, that was nearly seventeen inches long; just big enough for a large kelp salad.

Once the fish stopped moving, the mermaid sat down on the sandy bottom and began to wrap the fish in the kelps before eating the delicious meal. As she finished her hearty breakfast, the mermaid slowly began to exit the city and into the open sea. While she swam a loud sound of chattering caught her attention, making her turn to see a pair of dolphins approach her. The mermaid smiled and stroked the creature's heads gently as they warned her to stay in the sea, that there was a boat near her usual island.

She smiled and assured the dolphins she would be fine before she began to swim away slowly. The dolphins followed the mermaid, playfully nudging the mermaid as they wanted her to play chase, making her laugh and give in to the creature's demands. Soon she was swimming quickly and hiding as the dolphins seemed her out, looking around all areas of coral before soon finding her. The mermaid laughed gently as the dolphins circled her and nuzzled against her as she once again kissed their heads.

Once the dolphins finished nuzzling against the mermaid and began to swim away, stating they were off to hunt. The mermaid smiled and nodded, watching the dolphins swim away as she relaxed on the seafloor. After a few minutes of resting, she began to swim again, keeping an eye out for any signs of human activity. The mermaid was close to the human world but she figured this would be the safest way to an island, where she could be uninterrupted with her legs. Suddenly, a roar above her made her eyes widen as she quickly found shelter in a nearby kelp forest as a loud splash was soon heard.

The mermaid watched as a male human struggled to stay afloat as the boat drove around crazily without anyone to control it. Soon the boat smacked the man in the head and began to sink into the depths of the sea. The mermaid's eyes widened before she could process what she was doing; the unconscious man was in her arms. As she gripped him, a few trinkets slipped from him and he seemed to relax as she held him. She dared not kiss the human but instead swam to the surface, making sure to keep his head above the water and her fins below the water, just in case there were other land dwellers nearby.

The boat that the man was in was stuck between rocks, its engine destroyed as she continued to swim the man closer to the shores of the human world. She knew the risks of swimming into the forbidden world but she refused to let an intelligent being like herself perish, whether it be a human, whale, merfolk, or dolphin. "They aren't mindless beings like a crab or fish we eat. I would never condemn something so similar to us to die, just because of what a few did so many years ago," she thought to herself and panted as the man was unable to help.

After about an hour of swimming and the duo were in the shallow waters, her orange and red fins scrapping against the wet sand as she pulled him onto land. She panted and turned the man over to see if he was indeed still alive, wiping the sand off his face as he snorted weakly. The mermaid smiled and stroked his cheek, "At least you are alive. Although that headache is going hurt when you wake up." As the man slept, the mermaid studied his curly black hair and passed out his face as something about this felt familiar. "It can't be," she mumbled in merfolk, as her eyes widened.

The mermaid eyed the sea, then the passed-out man before she began to crawl onto the hot sand of the forbidden world. "Can't risk him seeing my tail if it truly is him," she reasoned with herself as she crawled further and further away from the sea before hiding behind a bush. Her tail flopped wildly as her scales began to shift and sink into patches of skin as her hair became nice and soft, as the wind blew onto her bare naked body. Slowly her legs began to form as she heard moaning from the human. The only signs of anything fishy about her were drag marks from the sea and a trail of slime that left her tail. Slowly she rose from the bush and eyed the man as he began to awaken and look around.

The mermaid stayed behind the bush, eyeing the man as she tried to be certain if it was him. Slowly the man began to speak in his native tongue, making her tilt her head as he began to stand up. He seemed to be asking her questions but alas she did not speak the languages of the land, only of the sea. The man became silent as she was, both staring at one another; only the sea breaking the silence. Slowly the man took a step forward to her, making the mermaid snap out of her trance and run down; her necklace jingling between her large breasts as she stood in front of the man.

The duo silently studied one another, as the waves splashed near the mermaid; as if the sea was urging her to return to her domain. After studying the man closely, the mermaid bit her lips and began to approach him; the wind blowing on her hair, revealing her bare breasts to the man. Slowly he turned pink but remained silent as the mermaid stared into his eyes, now a mere few inches away from his face. The feeling of all those years ago tingled in her mind but there was only one surefire way to know.

Before the man could say another word, she pulled him close and pressed her lips onto his. The man immediately began to kiss back, as she pulled him close and felt his penis erect almost immediately in his pants. Just like when she was a guppy, the whole world seemed to fade away; her heart beating intensified as she wanted more of the man. But before she could get greedy she pulled away with the biggest smile she's had since she saved him nearly twenty years ago. The man was still processing what had happened before she kissed his cheek one last time, a promise to him that she would see him soon, then began to run into the sea.

As she began to swim further out, he yelled for her in his language; making her turn to him with hungry eyes. But it was too late as she could feel the shifting of her skin into scales, something she didn't want him to see yet. The mermaid submerged underwater, beginning to swim away; her large orange tail hitting the surface as her mind raced with utter joy. "It's him! I knew I would see him again, my heart told me so," she thought happily as she swam further out before diving out with a rush of adrenaline. The mermaid swam to where the man was sinking, hoping to find any item that would tell her where to go be with him.

At first, she saw nothing but a cheap pair of sunglasses and a handkerchief, but then on a small rock, she noticed something unusual. She swam to the rock, where a brown object lay; making her head tilt as she opened the item. Inside was a picture of her beloved as well as items with human markings. "The council should be able to help me. Besides I have to meet with them to go to his world," she thought with a smile before she kissed the photo. The mermaid's mind was dizzy with excitement, she wasn't even aware of all the fish swimming away as she continued to swim around the coral reef.

"It was fate to meet him, to be with him," she thought with a smile as she turned past the large rocks. The mermaid's eyes widened as she passed the coral, freezing in place as she was petrified. The human stared at her in complete shock as she continued to stay frozen with fear.
