Chapter 5 - Unfinished Masterpiece – Chapter 5: Hidden Strings

The academy corridors were unusually quiet that morning.

Not silent—just controlled. Every conversation felt cautious, every movement measured.

Today was the day.

The Strategy Examination.

I walked toward the classroom building with my usual calm pace, observing the small details around me. Students from different classes gathered in groups, whispering among themselves.

Fear.

Excitement.

Confidence.

Emotions were easy to read if you knew where to look.

Class C students stood near the courtyard fountain. Their representative was laughing lightly with a few classmates. But his smile wasn't genuine.

It never was.

Standing beside him was Nao Hoshino.

Her long hair swayed slightly in the morning wind as she watched the surrounding students.

Her eyes moved slowly across the courtyard… analyzing everyone.

Then for a brief second—

She looked directly at me.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

Interesting.

She had noticed me too.

But instead of stopping, I simply continued walking toward the classroom as if nothing had happened.

Observation first.

Action later.

Classroom – Class D

The classroom was already filled with tension.

Mio Tanaka stood near the front desk, holding a sheet of paper.

"Everyone, listen," she said. "The academy sent the details of today's challenge."

Students quickly gathered around her.

Keiko Yamashita looked nervous but excited.

"What kind of challenge is it?"

Mio read from the paper.

"Each class will receive a scenario involving limited resources. Teams must negotiate, trade information, and make strategic decisions to earn the highest score."

Ren Sakamoto groaned.

"So basically… thinking."

Shouhei Takeda cracked his knuckles.

"Sounds boring."

Hikari Aizawa remained silent in her seat, reading the details carefully.

Her expression didn't change.

But her mind was clearly moving.

Fast.

Kenta leaned over to my desk.

"Haruto… what do you think?"

I glanced at the paper briefly.

"The challenge isn't about solving the problem," I said quietly.

"It's about manipulating the other teams."

Kenta blinked.

"Wait… what?"

But before he could ask more questions—

The classroom door opened.

Akira Shidou entered.

"Class D," he said calmly, "please proceed to the strategy hall."

Strategy Hall

All four classes gathered inside a large circular room.

Large screens displayed the competition rules.

Class A stood confidently near the front.

Class B looked organized and calm.

Class C…

Was watching everyone.

And Class D stood slightly apart.

Typical hierarchy.

The screen flashed.

Scenario: Resource Allocation Simulation

Each class would receive limited supplies to support a fictional town after a disaster.

But there was a twist.

Classes could trade, deceive, or sabotage each other to gain advantage.

In other words—

A psychological war.

The timer began.

Immediately the room exploded with movement.

Class A began organizing resources efficiently.

Class B started negotiating calmly.

Class C spread out like predators, observing weaknesses.

And Class D…

Hesitated.

Mio tried to organize everyone.

"Okay, let's divide into groups—"

But uncertainty spread through the class.

Confusion.

Fear of making the wrong decision.

Exactly the kind of chaos that destroys teamwork.

I leaned back slightly in my chair, watching the situation unfold.

Predictable.

But just as Mio began losing control of the discussion—

Hikari stood up.

"Everyone stop."

Her voice was calm but sharp enough to cut through the noise.

The room fell silent.

"We're wasting time arguing," she said. "First we need information."

Her eyes moved across the class.

"Toru, gather data about other classes' resources."

"Mio, coordinate negotiation attempts."

"Keiko, monitor communication between groups."

The class began moving again.

Order restored.

Efficient leadership.

Impressive.

But still incomplete.

Because Hikari's strategy assumed something important:

That the other classes were playing honestly.

And they weren't.

Across the hall, I noticed Nao Hoshino speaking quietly with several students from Class B.

Her smile was calm.

But the students she spoke to looked confused.

Uncertain.

Within minutes, Class B began making strange decisions.

Overpaying for simple resources.

Sharing unnecessary information.

Interesting.

She was already manipulating them.

Meanwhile, Class C's representative began approaching other teams confidently, offering trades that looked fair…

But weren't.

A clever trap.

The game was evolving quickly.

Three strategies were now visible on the board:

Class A — Efficiency

Class B — Cooperation

Class C — Manipulation

And Class D…

Had potential.

But lacked direction.

Kenta looked toward me again.

"Haruto… shouldn't we do something?"

I watched the room carefully.

Nao manipulating Class B.

Hikari stabilizing Class D.

Class A building resources quietly.

The game had reached its first critical moment.

If nothing changed…

Class D would lose.

But that was fine.

Because sometimes losing the first move…

Was necessary to control the entire game.

A faint smile appeared on my face.

It was time to pull the first string.
