Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 – The Intruder

Lina woke up to the soft glow of morning sunlight spilling through the curtains.

But instead of feeling rested, her heart was pounding.

The email from yesterday still lingered in her mind.

"You don't belong in his world. Leave now… or regret it forever."

She sat up, running a hand through her hair.

It was just the beginning, she knew that now.

Someone was watching. Someone was already plotting against her and Adrian.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door.

"Lina?" came a familiar voice.

Adrian.

She exhaled softly and opened the door.

He didn't smile. Not that she expected it.

He held a cup of coffee in one hand and a folder in the other.

"I thought you should see this," he said.

She took the folder hesitantly. Inside were security reports, surveillance footage, and photographs.

All of them were connected to her family and the people surrounding Adrian's company.

"Someone's been monitoring us for weeks," Adrian said calmly, his eyes darkening.

"They know about your family, about me… and about this marriage."

Lina's stomach twisted.

"You mean… someone wants to ruin us?"

Adrian nodded.

"They're testing you. Testing me. Whoever it is, they're dangerous."

She felt a chill.

"And you didn't tell me this before?"

He shrugged.

"You didn't need to know until it became relevant."

Her fingers trembled as she sifted through the papers.

The evidence was clear. Someone had been keeping track of her every move—her routines, the places she visited, even conversations with her friends.

Fear settled in her chest like a heavy stone.

"And now?" she asked quietly.

"Now," Adrian said, his voice firm, "we prepare. You follow my instructions, and nothing will happen. But one mistake… one slip… and it could get very dangerous."

Lina swallowed.

She wanted to argue, to protest that she could handle herself, but the cold certainty in his eyes shut her up.

She realized something she had refused to admit: Adrian Black wasn't just a husband by contract. He was a protector. A predator in his world, and she was now part of his territory.

Later that morning, Lina found herself walking through the mansion's corridors, trying to process everything.

Her eyes landed on the security monitors mounted on the wall.

Faces she didn't recognize passed across the screens—people entering the property, some staying just long enough to trigger alarms.

Her heart skipped.

"You really have eyes everywhere," she muttered.

A sudden noise made her jump.

A small window she was certain was locked had been tampered with.

Someone had tried to enter the house.

She didn't have time to react. Adrian was already behind her.

His expression was dark, almost predatory.

"You saw it too?" she asked.

He nodded slowly.

"Good. Now stay here. Don't move."

Adrian moved like a shadow, silent and fast. He disappeared down the hall, leaving Lina frozen in the middle of the room.

She waited. Minutes passed like hours. Then she heard his footsteps again.

He returned, calm as ever, holding the intruder—a young man barely in his twenties—by the collar. His expression was a mixture of fear and defiance.

"I suggest you never come near this property again," Adrian said coldly.

The intruder stammered.

"I… I was just… curious…"

Adrian's dark gaze didn't waver.

"Curiosity can kill. Consider this a warning."

He released the young man, who ran away without another word.

Lina's mind was racing.

"Who was that?" she asked.

"Someone testing your limits," Adrian said simply.

"And mine. This world is not safe, Lina. Not for you. Not for me."

The words sank into her chest. She realized just how dangerous this marriage had become.

It wasn't about love. It wasn't even about money anymore.

It was about power, control, and survival.

That evening, Adrian called Lina into his private study.

She entered, trying to hide her unease.

He was seated at a massive mahogany desk, papers and reports scattered in front of him.

"Sit," he said.

Lina obeyed, her hands resting tensely on her lap.

He studied her silently for a moment, then leaned back in his chair.

"You're not used to this world," he said.

"No, I'm not," she replied.

"You need to adapt quickly," he continued.

"This isn't a game. Not for me. And certainly not for you."

She swallowed hard.

"I know. I'm trying."

Adrian's eyes darkened.

"Trying isn't enough. You need to anticipate. You need to see the threats before they see you. Do you understand?"

"Yes," Lina whispered.

He stood and walked closer.

The room felt smaller with him near.

"You need to trust me," he said.

"I will protect you. But you have to follow my lead. No mistakes. No hesitation."

Lina nodded, though her chest tightened.

"I… I will."

For a moment, Adrian said nothing.

Then, almost quietly, he added:

"One more thing…"

Lina looked up.

"What?"

"This isn't the first attempt to harm me… or you. It will get worse."

Her stomach sank.

"I… I don't know if I can do this."

Adrian's gaze softened—just a fraction.

"You can. I know you can. And if you trust me… we might just survive this year."

Her chest tightened, but not from fear alone.

Something else stirred inside her—an emotion she wasn't ready to name.

And even as she tried to deny it, she felt it: the pull toward him. The strange, dangerous magnetism of Adrian Black.

Lina realizes that threats are already targeting them.

Adrian shows a more personal side, hinting at protection and trust—but also danger.

The year-long contract isn't just a marriage… it's a battle for survival.
