Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO GLARED AT ME

Chapter One:

I never believed in bad omens until the morning I spilled coffee on the most expensive suit I had ever seen. The day had started like any other, the sun barely rising over the city skyline, casting a pale glow across the streets as I rushed to catch my first train. My bag swung wildly against my side, and I tried to juggle my thermos of coffee, my laptop case, and my meticulously ironed shirt, convinced that today would be the start of something good.

And then it happened.

A misstep, a collision, and the steaming cup of coffee tipped over. Hot liquid splashed across a pristine, dark suit, leaving a jagged, steaming stain. I froze. Time seemed to slow, each second stretching like elastic as I looked up into the eyes of the man I had just drenched.

He looked like he had stepped straight out of a magazine—tall, impossibly sharp, and terrifyingly handsome. His dark eyes were storm clouds, heavy and unyielding, and they burned into mine as if I had committed the greatest crime known to mankind. My stomach dropped straight into my shoes, and for a moment, I couldn't breathe. Of all the people in this entire building, why did it have to be him?

"I'm so sorry!" I blurted out, bowing slightly, my hands flailing as if they could somehow erase what I had done. My first day at work was supposed to be perfect, a clean slate, a chance to finally prove myself in a company I had dreamed about for months. Instead, I had managed to ruin it in the span of five seconds with cheap coffee.

He didn't answer immediately. He just stood there, silent, his jaw tightening, his expression cold and unreadable. The quiet between us grew heavy, almost suffocating, louder than any shouting could have been. I wished desperately for the ground to open up and swallow me whole.

"Do you have any idea how much this suit costs?" he finally said, his voice calm but sharp, cutting through the air like a blade. My cheeks flamed with embarrassment. I shook my head quickly, clutching my bag to my chest as if it could somehow shield me. "I—I'll pay for the cleaning," I stammered, though I barely had enough money to cover my rent this month. His lips curved into something that was not quite a smile, something dangerous and knowing.

Before I could speak further, several employees appeared from the corridors, rushing toward us with perfect posture and synchronized steps. "Good morning, sir!" they chorused, bowing deeply in unison. My stomach twisted, and I followed their gaze back to the man I had just assaulted with my clumsiness. That was when the truth hit me like a truck.

This wasn't just any man.

This was Ryu Han, the CEO of the company I had just joined—and the person I had just humiliated.

"So you're the new employee," he said, his dark eyes scanning me as if he were reading every misstep I had ever made. "Clumsy, careless, and already causing trouble. Impressive." Each word landed like a small hammer, forcing me to straighten my spine even though my knees threatened to give way. I swallowed hard, my throat dry, and forced myself to meet his gaze. I needed this job. I couldn't afford to cry, stumble, or run away. Not today.

From that moment, Ryu Han seemed determined to make my life… difficult. Every meeting felt like a battlefield, every task a trap designed to catch me failing. The office, which should have been a place of opportunity, became a gauntlet. I watched as my coworkers flinched at his commands, taking careful notes, speaking only when spoken to. And then there was me—new, untested, painfully human in a place of calculated perfection.

Yet, whenever his cold eyes lingered on me for too long, a strange feeling stirred in my chest, something I didn't understand and certainly didn't expect. It was a strange mix of fear and fascination, a heartbeat that seemed to echo louder in his presence. I would catch myself staring back when I didn't mean to, only to quickly look away, cheeks burning.

I noticed the subtle details—how his suit always seemed impeccable, how his hair fell perfectly into place even when he was moving between offices, and the way his voice could cut through a room without raising volume. People obeyed him, yes, but there was also a quiet awe, a mix of fear and respect that radiated from those around him. And I had just been the unfortunate soul to stain his day.

By lunchtime, I had retreated to a corner of the cafeteria, trying to disappear into the background. But he appeared again, casually approaching with a presence that made the room feel smaller, more suffocating. My hands trembled as I held my fork, pretending not to notice him, yet I could feel his gaze slicing through the air until it landed squarely on me.

"Don't let this first mistake define you," he said quietly, almost as if speaking to himself. But his words were directed at me. There was a strange intensity in his eyes, something that hinted at a story I couldn't yet begin to understand. Despite the tension, I couldn't help but be curious. Who was this man, and why did it feel like he saw everything about me in a single look?

I didn't know then that the man who hated me would soon become the man who changed my life. That a single spilled cup of coffee could set in motion events I would never have imagined. And just like that, my peaceful dream of a new beginning transformed into the start of a story I had never seen coming—a story of anger, intrigue, and, perhaps, something far more complicated than I could have prepared for.
