Chapter 3 - Spoils and spite

Goblin corpses were scattered all over the floor. Chen wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand and looked back at me. Her eyes were still flickering with excitement.

"Li-An, did you see? I took out three of them at once!"

She ran up to me like a puppy begging for praise, pushing her chest forward. But there was no way Mei was going to stay quiet. Mei hopped lightly from the ceiling and wrapped her arms around my shoulders.

"Is that all? I slit the throat of the shaman hiding in the back. Li-An, I did better, right?"

The two women each grabbed one of my arms and started pulling. I felt like my limbs were going to pop off. I sighed and started picking up the mana stones the monsters had dropped.

"You both did great. So let's just pack these up first. We need money to eat something good."

We pushed deeper into the dungeon. This gate was longer than I expected. All along the way, Chen and Mei bickered. If Chen held my hand, Mei snatched the other one. Eventually, something happened.

We found a glittering chest in a corner. A dungeon treasure chest.

"I saw it first!"

Mei shouted and sprinted toward it. But what came out of the chest wasn't gold; it was a strange necklace. A choker with a red gem, featuring a very provocative design.

"This... looks like something that amplifies mana?"

As I picked up the necklace, the look in their eyes changed. This wasn't just a piece of equipment. Among hunters, it was known as a 'Token of Submission' type of artifact. It makes the wearer's senses sharper and makes them more sensitive to their master's mana.

"Li-An, give that to me. I fought the most today."

Chen approached, her tail wagging slowly. The buttons on her shirt were already halfway undone.

"What are you talking about! I caught the shaman, so it's mine!"

Mei pleaded, pressing her body against my thigh. In the narrow passage, the two beast-like women pressed in on me. The heat radiating from their skin warmed the air around us.

"We'll decide later. The dungeon isn't finished yet."

I tried to put the necklace in my pocket, but Chen gripped my wrist tightly. Her strength was greater than usual.

"Decide now. Li-An, who are you going to put it on?"

Her voice dropped an octave. This wasn't a joke. For beast-people, hierarchy is more important than life. And I knew that my choice would determine the 'order' of things tonight.

I toyed with the necklace in my pocket. A hungry wolf in front of me, a cunning leopard at my side. In the dungeons of Xinghai, the desires of these women are scarier than the monsters.

"Fine. I'll give it to whoever takes down the boss in the next room."

The moment the words left my mouth, their auras exploded. They didn't even look back as they sprinted toward the boss room. I leaned against the wall and almost reached for a cigarette before stopping myself.

"Looks like I won't be getting any sleep tonight either."

I slowly followed after them. From a distance, along with a massive roar, I heard their delighted screams.
