Chapter 4 - Scene Four — The Forest Path

Morning arrived quietly in the village.

Sunlight slipped through the paper windows of the small house.

Birds sang somewhere in the distance.

Hikari stepped outside, stretching her arms as the cool mountain air brushed her face.

It felt completely different from Tokyo.

No traffic.

No distant sirens.

Just wind and trees.

Her grandmother was already working in the garden.

She looked up briefly.

"Going for a walk?"

Hikari nodded.

"Just exploring a little."

Grandmother wiped her hands on her apron.

"Stay on the forest path."

She pointed toward the mountain behind the village.

"And don't go too far."

The narrow path leading into the forest began just behind the shrine.

Tall cedar trees formed a green tunnel above the trail.

Sunlight filtered through the branches in soft golden beams.

Hikari paused at the small shrine before entering the forest.

It was simple.

Old wood.

A rope tied across the entrance with white paper charms fluttering gently in the breeze.

A few offerings rested on the altar.

Coins.

Rice.

A small bottle of sake.

She remembered coming here as a child.

Her grandmother once told her the shrine belonged to the mountain spirit.

Hikari placed a small coin beside the other offerings.

Then she bowed slightly.

Not out of deep belief.

Just a habit.

The forest path continued deeper into the mountain.

The air grew cooler as she walked.

The smell of cedar and moss filled the air.

Birdsong echoed softly between the trees.

After a while she stopped near a clearing.

The forest here felt… quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of silence that made you feel watched.

Hikari slowly turned.

Something moved among the trees.

A large shape stepped out onto a rock overlooking the clearing.

A wolf.

Its silver-gray fur shimmered slightly in the sunlight.

Golden eyes stared directly at her.

For a moment neither of them moved.

The wolf stood perfectly still.

Watching her.

Studying her.

Hikari's heart beat faster.

But strangely…

She didn't feel afraid.

The wolf tilted its head slightly.

Almost curious.

Then, without warning, it leapt down from the rock and disappeared silently into the forest.

Not a sound.

Not a broken branch.

Just gone.

Hikari stood there for a long moment.

Trying to process what she had seen.

"A wolf…"

She whispered to herself.

High above the clearing, hidden among the trees, the wolf watched her again.

Silent.

Curious.

For the first time in many years…

The mountain guardian had found a human who did not run away.

And somewhere deep within the mountain…

The ancient spirit of the forest stirred slightly.

As if noticing the meeting between wolf and human.
