Chapter 38 - 38 Warm Welcome

Reiji then tried taking a step closer but found himself stuck to the Kraken. He looked down and saw water pooling where his feet were. He then looked up at Silas who just stood up.

"Damn you."

Reiji said before Silas conjured more water from the ocean and wrapped it around Reiji, slowly drowning him. Reiji didn't look away from Silas for one second.

I promise you, Silas, your request will go unfulfilled because only you will die when we meet again!

Reiji's final thoughts before he went unconscious. When he woke up, he was laying in silk sheets. He quickly sat up, startling a maid who was near the bed, watching over him.

She quickly walked out of the room. Reiji looked around. He was in a bed that definitely belonged to a very rich person. The room was nice and warm. He then noticed another maid to the other side of the bed. He also noticed his red, sleeveless kimono and pants folded on a nearby table. He lifted the blanket that was covering him and realized he was naked. More interestingly, he hadn't lost any muscle.

The maid politely bowed and poured a cup of water which she then handed to Reiji. He looked at it for a moment before he drank it.

He reached for his clothes and looked at the maid who turned around. He then stood up and put on his pants, kimono and tied it all together with his obi. He then sighed.

My weapons aren't here. I keep losing that stuff.

He then had another realization before the door swung open and the most beautiful lady he had ever seen walked in with two guards. The woman had beautiful long brunette hair and wore a classic dress that was probably very hot in summer and had a pretty big cleavage window for her above average chest size.

The guards were knights, fitted with metal armour that covered every part of their body and were armed with classic long swords.

"Excuse me for the roughness of my people. I'm Seraphine Aldraveth."

She said, grabbing the hoop skirt of her dress and lifting it up slightly as she bowed.

"Surely you must be hungry and thirsty. We have food ready for you if you would just follow me."

The woman turned and walked down the hall. The guards waited patiently for Reiji to exit the room so they could provide an escort.

Reiji left the room after a moment of observation and speed walked after the woman.

After a few short moments they made it to the dining hall where there was a meal ready. Meat, potatoes, vegetables, bread, butter and pretty much everything a human could eat.

Without even waiting for her permission he sat down and dug in. As he ate his food she sat down across from him. One guard stood behind her and the other behind Reiji.

"I have a few questions."

She said.

"Like what?"

Reiji asked with a full mouth. Seraphine Aldraveth took a moment before she spoke.

"Guards, please leave us alone."

When the guards left, she started speaking.

"Frostgnashers, The Frost people, the quiet screamer and the manhunter. Do those words mean anything to you?"

Reiji took a moment, eating his food in a relaxed manner.

"The first two do. Never heard of the manhunter nor the quiet screamer."

"The manhunter has the ability to control corpses and the quieter screamer is an amalgamation of a human with a different animal."

Reiji paused for a moment before he kept eating.

"And…why did you bring up those two specifically?"

Reiji asked. The woman sat there, unmoved.

"There is no point in hiding anything if we are to build trust. The white cloaks is what they are called. They are my soldiers, but you know they aren't any ordinary ones."

As he ate, he looked up at her for a moment.

I wonder what she's going to tell me.

He thought to himself.

"That man's death was in self-defence."

Reiji said. Seraphine Aldraveth didn't react in any noticeable way.

"That man was a valuable soldier of mine. Directly under my command."

"Are you saying his death wasn't in my self-defence? Because when two people walk up to you and one of them says something along the lines of "don't kill him" you might be surprised by your natural reaction."

Reiji said in an irritated manner. Seraphine had no reaction.

Her life force suggests she's not exactly in a happy mood.

"Well, what's done is done. I believe his death wasn't for nothing. Now, the important thing is that you were followed by them. That's why I brought up the manhunter and the quiet screamer, because they saw you fight them."

"And…what exactly do you want from me?"

Reiji asked before he took another bite of the meat in front of him.

"I purpose a partnership. You see, you're special. As a token of trust, I'm willing to explain certain things to you. Every being has supernatural energy. The white cloaks you fought are something we call magicians; they use mana and every creature has it. We tie mana to the strength of one's life, but you don't have any. That flips what we know about supernatural energy on its head."

Reiji just kept eating his food calmly.

Mana, huh? They use it so my guess is that they don't have an infinite supply of it. Whatever she says, just keep eating your food.

He thought to himself. "I'm listening." He said so she would continue.

"How you were able to kill a magician is beyond confusing and even more so is how you brought down a Kraken on your own."

Reiji kept eating normally, like nothing was said.

On my own? Silas lied to boost my reputation? What is that man getting at? And what does she mean by a Kraken? The life force where her heart is became a bit erratic for a moment.

"The truth is you are uncharted and exceptional. Both as someone to study and someone to help defend this world. Tsukikage Yumesasa, does that name tell you anything?"

"No." Reiji quickly answered, slightly confused.

"Well, he is said to have predicted these beings that are actively appearing in our world."

Reiji then paused his eating for a moment before he looked up at her.

Him? The guy that wrote about there being a saviour to save the world? It must be the guy who Fujioka told me about.

"But we have just one page of what was documented. We believe if we are able to find the rest of the papers, if any more exist, then we will have a better chance of winning."

Those papers won't do anything. Their descriptions are too vague. He thought to himself.

Reiji looked at her for a moment. "And how are these things getting to our world?"

"We don't know." She answered.

"I'm sorry, but I can't help you. I'm just a man who doesn't even have a sword."

He stood up. "I'll be going home now." He said and started walking away.

"You still need to be studied."

Seraphine said in a cold tone before Reiji's gaze went hazy and he fell to the ground with a smile on his face.
