Chapter 3 - Come And Get Your Family, If You Can

It had been two weeks since Aegon was discharged from the hospital, and had already gotten familiar with the new settings of the city.

However, there was one thing that disturbed him more often.

It was the man that came to visit him on his day of discharge.

It was barely three hours since they had left the hospital that day and the man had already heard the news of his discharge, even though Maureen didn't use her phone to inform anyone at that time.

In fact there was no one to inform. Their both parents had died in a car crash when Aegon was just six years of age, while his sister was five years older than him.

With no other family members to take them in, they were both sent into an orphanage.

However, after Maureen turned eighteen she took Aegon and left the orphanage and since then she had been providing for themselves.

Aegon knew all these and even at that time they left the orphanage, Maureen had refused to have any friends, only focusing on work.

However, who was that man named Reynold?

After the man came into their house and gave his regards to Aegon, he took Maureen to a corner of the house and spoke to her alone.

During this time Aegon didn't know what they were talking about and was only curious.

After they had finished talking, the man came out and left the house saying his goodbye to Aegon with a smile that sounded like they would be seeing each other again.

Only after Reynold had left the house did Maureen come out, however her expression was pale. The smile she once had was now dead dry.

Aegon noticed this and tried to get any information from her but with a fake smile all she said was;

"I'm really okay Aegon, truly, you don't have to worry about me."

This really hit Aegon in his heart as he knew that something was definitely wrong, and Reynold had something to do with it, hundred percent.

Aegon had also noticed how much Maureen was struggling and had not really adapted to the now changed city.

One could say she was doing much better before all these changes.

During this time, Aegon had thought of how she could afford such a lifestyle if she was struggling, and there was only one thought that came to his mind.

Reynold.

Although there was nothing Aegon could do as he hadn't showed up to their house since the last time.

Bringing all these into consideration Aegon knew there was only one thing he could do, and that was to find a job to support his sister.

However, after interviewing many and getting rejected there was nothing for him.

The ones that might have accepted him were either of low pay, and the ones that didn't bother to accept him was because he lacked the qualifications attached.

He had leaped three years into the future and had missed many things, so it was only natural.

However… there was only one job that was available, and that was to become a Farmer.

Farmers are humans who have awakened the ability of a Talent, and are capable of farming resources and fighting monsters in the Abyss.

The resources farmed from the Abyss is a major factor to how much the city had evolved in the last years.

Those who enter are called Farmers because he go to Farmer resources, however they also have to fight monsters that they come across.

These resources that are gotten from the Abyss can be sold, traded and used to develop oneself which was how Reynold got the gift for Maureen.

This was the only job that Aegon could do, however he would need to firstly awaken a talent.

Aegon told his plan to his sister but she immediately rejected it and forbade it, saying:

"It is not only a reckless thought but also a dangerous and risky gamble, you want me to lose you after I have just gotten you back?"

While there are good spoils that comes with entering the Abyss, it is also a gamble of one's life as many Farmers had entered the Abyss and never came out.

This was a reasonable reason for Maureen to reject the idea from Aegon and for the past few days he hadn't had enough sleep because of his worry.

..

"According to what I have gathered so far these Framer's are categorized in ranks, but I don't know for sure how it is done."

Aegon was on his way back to his house as he pondered in his heart the information he had obtained.

"Also, it would seem like Reynold is also a Farmer, which would explain that authority I sensed that day."

"He is not only a Farmer but a high rank one at that."

"I'm also sure that while I was in that slumber he had been the one taking care of Maureen, and was also the person who gave her that house."

"I wouldn't say he didn't do well for my sister but I can't just get off the feeling that there is more to it. In his eyes that day, I could see something lurking with those smiles."

"He's a mysterious person and I need to know more about him, and how he knew of my discharge so quickly without Maureen informing him."

Aegon was deep within his thoughts as he walked through the streets. He was no longer living in the same outskirts of the city as three years ago.

But a new and more advanced district with skyscrapers of heights 414 meters or 1,358.5 feets.

Their structures were insanely futuristic and breathtaking, something that would have been only a dream for the people of the 21 century on modern earth.

Aegon didn't think he would ever witness it in his life, but all these were achieved through the spoils of three years ago disasters and the Abyss.

"Although the city is beautiful and advanced, if I can't get a proper job I would surely starve."

The thing is, in this new city most people are already awakened and these people can either become Farmers or not.

Those that don't become Farmers chose the easier path but are still beneficial because the power is what ruled the world now.

At this moment, Aegon reached his house, even though he doesn't like the idea of staying in a place of someone he didn't like.

It was already past midday and his sister was home because it was the weekend. Even though the city work was demanding, people don't neglect their free days.

Reaching for the handle of the door Aegon saw that the door was half open.

"Hmph?… Why is the door open, did Maureen forget to lock it?"

It was strange as it wasn't like Maureen to leave the door open.

He entered the house, closed the door, and in the corridor he noticed something.

"Where are her shoes?"

Aegon entered the house to the living room and immediately called out her name, but there was no response.

"Did she go out today? I thought she said she wanted to rest?"

Aegon felt a bit strange as he moved deeper reaching Maureen's room. He knocked and called her name again, but there was no response.

Seeing this, he opened the door to confirm and as soon as it was wide open, suddenly his face turned pale.

Before him the room was completely in ruin, and turned upside down. Books were scattered everywhere, the bed lamp was broken on the ground, the bed was rough as though there was a fight on it.

However, the things that stood out the most were writings, not just anything writing, but one written in blood.

Aegon was filled with fear and hatred as he read the context of the writing.

Come and get your family if you want her, I dare you boy. Ps RD

At the end of the statement, there was a name tagged RD and after it was the drawing of a smile.

Aegon had seen this drawing before and knew where exactly that was. It was a design on a shirt, which out of all the people he had seen since he woke up, that shirt stood out the most to him.

And who else could that person be if not:

"Reynold!"
