Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – The Aether Ceremony

Located in Silverfern Village, within the Kingdom of Astravale on the human continent of Valoria in Aetherion, Kael Draven sat quietly beneath the wide branches of a towering Linden tree, a small book resting in his hands. The soft sunlight filtered through the leaves, dancing across the pages as he immersed himself in the knowledge of the world around him. At the age of five, fragments of memories from his previous life had returned to him suddenly, flooding his consciousness with glimpses of a world very different from Aetherion. From that moment, he had known that he was not an ordinary child. Unlike many others who struggled to survive or learn simple lessons, Kael's life was comfortable, surrounded by parents who loved him dearly and a household where chores, meals, and countless tasks were attended to by a team of devoted servants. He often marveled to himself at his fortune, thinking how different this life was from the lonely existence he had once endured.

Yet, even in the midst of comfort, Kael was troubled. His elemental affinity had not yet awakened, and he worried greatly about the Aether Awakening Ceremony, which would reveal his power to the entire village. He knew that if he failed, the shame would not only be his but would bring disappointment upon his wealthy and respected family. Though the Draven household was known for its wealth and influence, Kael feared that his failure would stand out all the more because the villagers expected greatness from someone of his status.

His thoughts were interrupted by a sudden flash of red hair as a young girl ran toward him. Kael looked up in shock. Faye, the sweet and charming girl from the village, approached with a lively smile that seemed to light up the area around her. Her long red hair shimmered in the sunlight, and her bright blue eyes sparkled with curiosity and energy. Kael's breath caught in his chest; he had never seen anyone so beautiful. For a moment, he forgot his worries, captivated by her presence.

"Hi!" Faye said cheerfully, breaking Kael from his stunned silence. "My name is Faye. Who are you?"

Kael straightened his small frame, puffing out his chest slightly as if to show confidence, and replied proudly, "My name is Kael." Faye's eyes widened slightly at the sight of his white hair and red eyes, and she giggled softly. "You look really handsome, Kael," she complimented, making his chest swell with pride like never before.

"Thank you," Kael replied, feeling warmth spread through him.

"What are you doing here?" Faye asked.

"Just reading," Kael answered simply, holding up his book.

"Can I join you?" she asked, settling beside him. From that day forward, Kael and Faye spent countless hours together, reading, learning, and sharing stories under the shade of the Linden tree. Over the next six years, the two became inseparable. Despite living in different households, their bond grew stronger each day. They trained together, played together, and confided in one another, knowing that neither distance nor time could break the friendship that had formed between them.

One evening, while they rested after training, Kael felt a heaviness in his chest, a doubt he could not fully explain. Faye noticed immediately and asked softly, "Kael, what's wrong?"

Kael shook his head, staring at the ground. "I… I don't know. I just feel like I'm not strong enough," he admitted.

Faye placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You don't have to prove your strength to anyone," she said softly. "Just do what you can, try your best. The stars in the night sky don't compete with one another, yet each shines in its own time. You may not see your own light yet, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. Don't compare yourself to anyone else—just be better than the person you were yesterday. Let your future be brighter than today."

Her words, calm and patient, comforted Kael. He nodded, feeling some of the weight lift from his chest, though a lingering worry remained. Soon, it would be time for him to attend the Aether Awakening Ceremony.

The Aether Ceremony was a sacred tradition. Every child aged twelve to thirteen was summoned to the kingdom to have their elemental affinity, starting rank, and potential weapon power revealed. Talented youths were then selected to train at one of the Five Great Academies of the Kingdom: the Astryx Grand Academy, Valorian Knight Academy, Arcspire Mage Academy, Stormblade Combat Academy, or Ironclad Battle Academy. Failure at this stage was rare, but disastrous, often branding the child as weak in the eyes of the village and bringing shame upon their families.

Kael had avoided the ceremony when he was twelve, fearing disgrace, but now at thirteen, he had no choice. Faye, ever supportive, took his hand. "Come on, Kael. Let's go together."

As they entered the Astravale Kingdom, the grandeur of the capital left Kael in awe. The streets were filled with nervous children and their families, all moving toward the Grand Plaza where the ceremony would take place. Kael's grip on Faye's hand tightened as he saw the curious and expectant eyes of the villagers, all aware of the Draven family's status. The pressure weighed heavily on him. "I… I don't want to disappoint anyone," he whispered to himself.

His mother, Serena Draven, noticed his hesitation. She knelt beside him, touching his cheek gently. "Kael, everything will be fine," she said soothingly. "Some children never awaken any elemental power and live simple lives as farmers or workers. You, even at F-rank, already have a potential that others cannot touch. Don't fear failure—you have time to grow."

With a small nod, Kael felt slightly reassured. Faye squeezed his hand and whispered, "Let's go, Kael."

The Grand Plaza was filled with anticipation. In the center stood the Aethercore Stone, a towering crystal pedestal, shimmering with faint streams of mystical light. High Examiner Valerius Thorne, a stern and respected royal official, stepped forward, his long silver cloak fluttering in the wind.

"Welcome, young ones, to the Aether Ceremony," Valerius began, his deep voice echoing across the plaza. "This sacred ritual will reveal the power that lies within each of you. Step forward when your name is called and place your hand upon the Aethercore Stone. The light it produces will determine your elemental affinity, your starting rank, and whether you awaken the rare Weapon Power. Those who surpass the kingdom's standard will earn the honor of entering one of the Five Great Academies."

The ceremony began, each child stepping forward one by one. Some awoke elemental powers effortlessly, the crystal glowing brightly beneath their hands. Others failed silently, bowed their heads, and stepped aside.

Finally, it was Faye's turn. She stepped forward, her hand trembling slightly as she touched the stone. At first, nothing happened. Then, a beam of radiant light shot from the crystal high into the sky, dazzling everyone in the plaza. Faye's elemental power had awakened to an extraordinary degree. She had opened three elements—Aqua, Volt, and Terra—and, astonishingly, had awakened her weapon, the Void Spear.

The spear appeared in her hands, sleek and black with a dark purple core running along the shaft, emitting shadowy particles like fragments of the night sky. The plaza was silent in awe as everyone realized she was a prodigy. Her father, who had been B-Rank, looked at her in amazement, pride shining in his eyes. Faye had been offered a position at the Astryx Grand Academy, the strongest institution in the kingdom.

Kael watched with a mix of awe and nervousness as Faye returned to him, smiling brightly. He felt happy for her, but his heart sank as he realized his turn was next. When his name was called, all eyes fell upon him. The Draven name carried weight, and everyone expected great things from him.

Kael stepped forward, trying to steady his racing heart. The crowd watched, curious and anxious, expecting power, expecting greatness. He placed his hand upon the Aethercore Stone, and a gentle, almost imperceptible aura flowed from him. But unlike the brilliant beams of light that had shot from Faye's awakening, Kael's aura remained faint, and the stone's glow did not intensify.

Time seemed to stretch. A hushed silence fell over the plaza. The light from the stone gradually dimmed until it faded completely, leaving only the crystal's natural shimmer. Kael had failed. He had not awakened any elemental power. His Weapon Power, the axe that had appeared in infancy, had vanished completely. He remained powerless in the eyes of the world.

Whispers rose among the crowd. Many were too afraid to speak openly, knowing the Dravens' reputation, but the murmurs were there nonetheless. Kael felt the sting of shame and disappointment prick at his heart. He had hoped to prove himself, to honor his family, yet he had failed completely.

Faye quickly came to his side, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry, Kael," she whispered. "This isn't the end. You can still become a warrior. There are other paths—other opportunities. We can face them together."

But Kael, frustrated and angry, clenched his fists. "Together?" he shouted, his voice trembling. "You think I want guidance, to be a soldier for the kingdom? I want adventure! I want to explore the unknown! I want to fight! I want to carve my name into history, to make my family proud in my own way! And you think I can throw all of that away?"

Before Faye or his parents could respond, Kael turned and ran, fleeing the plaza. His parents and Faye searched frantically, calling his name, venturing into the forests and hidden corners where he might have fled. They searched all day and into the night, but Kael was nowhere to be found.

Exhausted, hungry, and frustrated, Kael continued running, trying to escape the weight of expectations and his own disappointment. In his desperate flight, he stumbled into the territory of an Elf settlement. Mistaking their presence for danger, he tried to resist—but he was weak, and they overpowered him, dragging him away.

When Kael awoke, he found himself in the Elf territory, surrounded by strangers, sold into servitude, and stripped from the comforts of Silverfern Village. The boy who had once been the privileged Draven heir was now a slave, his future uncertain. His comfortable life was gone, and his journey into a world of struggle, growth, and adventure had truly begun.

Kael Draven's destiny, the one that had once been hidden behind privilege and expectation, was about to unfold in ways he could never have imagined.
