Chapter 50 - 50. The Morning After

Chapter 50: The Morning After

The first light of dawn crept through the windows of the small house in Coco Village, painting the walls in soft gold. The crew had spread out across the floor during the night, blankets and cushions forming a rough campsite in the main room. Zoro slept against the wall, swords within reach even in sleep. Sanji had claimed a corner near the kitchen, ever the cook even unconscious. Usopp was curled in a ball, muttering something about giant snails. Johnny and Yosaku had passed out on each other, snoring in an off-key harmony.

Luffy hadn't slept in the main room.

He'd stayed in Nami's room, holding her until her breathing evened out and the tears stopped. Sometime in the dark, she'd finally fallen asleep against his chest, her fingers still clutching his shirt. He'd watched the ceiling for hours, thinking about the next day, about Arlong, about all of it.

When the sun rose, he was still awake.

Nami stirred against him, her eyes fluttering open. For a moment, confusion crossed her face. Then she remembered. The village. The crew. The fight ahead. Him.

"Morning," she whispered.

Luffy looked down at her. The mask was still there, the serious captain who didn't smile or flirt or make stupid jokes. But something softer flickered behind his eyes.

"Morning."

She didn't let go. Neither did he.

They lay there for a long moment, the weight of the day pressing down but not crushing. Not yet.

In the main room, Nojiko was already awake. She moved quietly around the kitchen, preparing tea and whatever breakfast she could manage with limited supplies. The sound of snoring from the crew made her shake her head slightly.

'She really did bring an army.'

A knock at the door made her freeze.

She crossed the room slowly, peeking through the window. Her expression softened with recognition and something like relief. She opened the door.

Genzo stood on the threshold, his scarred face etched with worry. The pinwheel on his hat spun slowly in the morning breeze. He was a solid man, built like someone who'd spent his life working, but age and stress had carved deep lines into his features.

"Nojiko." His voice was rough. "I heard rumors. Strange men in the village. Outsiders." He paused. "Is Nami back?"

Nojiko stepped aside. "She's here."

Genzo walked in and stopped dead at the sight of the crew. Zoro, still sleeping against the wall. Sanji, stirring at the sound of the door. Usopp, Johnny, and Yosaku in various states of unconsciousness. He counted quickly, assessing, measuring.

"Who are they?"

Before Nojiko could answer, Nami emerged from her room. She looked tired, eyes still puffy from the night before, but there was something different in her posture. Straighter. Stronger.

"Genzo."

Genzo turned and saw her. For a moment, the stern mask cracked. He crossed the room in three quick strides and pulled her into a hug. Not gentle. Fierce. Like he was afraid she'd disappear if he let go.

"You're back," he muttered into her hair. "You're actually back."

Nami hugged him back, just as fierce. "I'm back."

They stayed like that for a long moment. When they finally separated, Genzo's eyes were wet, though he'd never admit it.

"Who are they?" he asked again, nodding toward the crew.

Nami took a breath. "My crew. The Straw Hat Pirates."

Genzo's eyebrows shot up. "Pirates?"

"The good kind."

"There's no such thing as good pirates."

Luffy chose that moment to walk out of Nami's room. He'd put his straw hat on, the shadow hiding his expression. He walked past them without a word, heading for the kitchen, for the tea Nojiko had prepared.

Genzo stared. "Who's that?"

Nami's voice was quiet but certain. "My captain. And my boyfriend."

Genzo's head swiveled back to her. "Your what?"

Before she could answer, Luffy returned with a cup of tea, leaning against the wall and watching the conversation without participating. His silence was unnerving. Genzo couldn't read him at all.

The rest of the crew began to stir. Zoro opened one eye, saw Genzo, and closed it again. Sanji sat up, immediately looking for Nojiko to compliment her tea-making. Usopp groaned and rolled over. Johnny and Yosaku kept snoring.

Nojiko brought out more cups and a pot of simple porridge. The crew gathered, eating quietly, the tension of strangers meeting strangers slowly easing.

Genzo sat at the table, watching them all. Finally, he spoke.

"The villagers are talking. Word spreads fast in a place like this. They say Nami came back with armed men. They say there's gonna be trouble." He looked at Nami. "Is there gonna be trouble?"

Nami met his eyes. "Yes."

Genzo's jaw tightened.

"Arlong's had this island for eight years," Nami continued. "He's taken everything. Money, food, hope. It's time for that to end."

Genzo looked at the crew again. At Zoro's swords. At Sanji's stance, ready even at rest. At Usopp's nervous hands. At Johnny and Yosaku, who'd finally woken and were eating quietly. At Luffy, still silent, still watching, still unreadable.

"You're gonna fight him."

"We're gonna kill him," Luffy said.

The words were flat. Matter-of-fact. Like he was discussing the weather.

Genzo stared at him. "You don't know what you're dealing with. Arlong's not human. He's stronger, faster, tougher than anything you've ever faced. His crew…"

"I've faced worse."

Genzo opened his mouth to argue, then closed it. There was something in this boy's eyes. Something that made arguing feel pointless.

Nami reached across the table and took Luffy's hand. Genzo noticed. Nojiko noticed. The crew pretended not to notice, but they did.

"We're not leaving," Nami said. "Not until Arlong's dead and this island is free."

Genzo was quiet for a long moment. Then he sighed, the weight of years in the sound.

"Bellemere would be proud of you," he said quietly.

Nami's eyes glistened, but she didn't cry. Not yet.

Genzo stood. "I'll spread the word. Tell the villagers to stay inside when it starts. Whatever happens, we'll be ready." He paused at the door, looking back at Luffy. "Take care of her. Or I'll make you regret it."

Luffy met his gaze. No smile. No nod. Just those dark, empty eyes that said more than words ever could.

Genzo left.

The crew sat in silence for a moment. Then Usopp spoke.

"So... that was intense."

Johnny nodded. "Guy's got presence."

Yosaku agreed. "Wouldn't want to owe him money."

Sanji lit a cigarette, blowing smoke toward the ceiling. "He loved her. The mother, I mean. You could see it."

Nojiko nodded slowly. "He did. Still does, in his own way."

Nami looked at the door where Genzo had disappeared. "He's the closest thing to a father I've had my whole life."

Luffy squeezed her hand. Still silent. Still present.

Zoro stood, stretching. "So what's the plan? We going straight to Arlong Park or do we need to scout first?"

Luffy finally spoke. "We go. Today. No waiting."

Nami looked at him. "Just like that?"

"Just like that." He turned to her, and for a moment, the mask slipped. "You've waited eight years. That's enough."

She nodded, swallowing hard.

Sanji stood. "I'll prepare something substantial. You don't fight on empty stomachs."

Usopp started checking his slingshot, his hands shaking slightly but his jaw set. Johnny and Yosaku gathered their weapons, exchanging nervous but determined glances.

Zoro simply stood and waited. Ready. Always ready.

Luffy looked at them all. His crew. His family.

"This is it," he said quietly. "Everything we've done, every fight, every island, every step, it's all been leading here. Not just for Nami. For us. For what we're gonna become."

He paused.

"When we leave this island, the world's gonna know our names. The Marines, the other pirates, everyone. And when we get to the Grand Line, they'll know we're coming."

He looked at Nami.

"Let's go free your village."

She nodded, tears finally spilling over, but smiling through them.

"Let's go."
