Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Test Begins

I woke on Day Four with absolute certainty burning in my chest like a fucking FURNACE.

Yesterday wasn't luck.

Yesterday was POWER.

And today I'm going to prove it.

No more beginner's success.

No more "oh, she got lucky with one dead bird."

Today I show Corvus—and myself—that I can DO this.

That I'm not just talented.

That I'm UNSTOPPABLE.

Nyx was coiled on my pillow, watching me with those glowing purple eyes, its tongue flicking out to taste my manic energy in the air.

"You're vibrating," it observed.

"I'm MOTIVATED," I said, throwing off the covers and practically launching myself out of bed. "I'm going back to that library and I'm going to raise something BIGGER. Something BETTER. Something that proves yesterday wasn't a fluke."

Something that proves I'm LEGENDARY.

Nyx uncoiled slowly, deliberately, like it had all the time in the world.

"You're obsessed."

"I'm COMMITTED," I corrected, pulling on a simple black training dress with shaking hands. "There's a difference."

"Is there?" Nyx asked, and I could hear the amusement in its voice.

Fuck you, snake.

You're not wrong, but fuck you anyway.

"Yesterday I animated a dead raven," I said, braiding my hair back with quick, aggressive movements. "Made it FLY. Made it circle the library like it was still alive. Corvus called me REMARKABLE."

Remarkable.

That word is tattooed on my SOUL now.

"And today?" Nyx slithered down from the bed, scales shimmering in the morning light.

"Today I prove it wasn't luck." I turned to face the mirror, and my reflection looked FERAL. Wild eyes. Manic grin. Absolute hunger radiating from every pore. "Today I show him I can do it AGAIN. And BETTER."

Today I become UNDENIABLE.

Nyx's tongue flicked out. "I'll accompany you. Watching you fail repeatedly should be entertaining."

I love this sarcastic magical serpent.

I genuinely, deeply love this asshole snake.

"Come on then," I said, opening the door with more force than necessary. "Let's go disappoint you."

The walk to the library felt different today.

Yesterday I'd been nervous. Uncertain. Testing boundaries.

Today?

Today I'm a PREDATOR.

Today I KNOW what I'm capable of.

Today I'm going to PROVE it.

The skeleton servants bowed as I passed. The purple flames in the candelabras seemed to burn brighter. Even the fucking WALLS felt like they were watching me with approval.

House Raven recognizes power.

And I'm RADIATING it.

Nyx coiled around my shoulders, a living necklace of scales and menace.

"You're walking differently," it observed.

"I'm walking like someone who's about to make HISTORY," I said.

Or at least make Corvus smile again.

That genuine smile yesterday—that RESPECT—

I want MORE of that.

I NEED more of that.

The library doors loomed ahead, massive and black and carved with scenes of ritual sacrifice.

Perfect.

Absolutely PERFECT.

I pushed them open.

The library was exactly as I'd left it—cathedral-like space filled with forbidden knowledge, the smell of old parchment and death magic, purple wards glowing faintly in the shadows.

Home.

This place feels like HOME.

Corvus was in his usual corner, surrounded by open grimoires and what looked like several dead THINGS I couldn't immediately identify.

Normal Tuesday morning for the Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge.

I fucking LOVE this place.

"You're early," he said without looking up.

"I'm READY," I replied, and my voice came out sharper than I intended. Hungrier. "I want to continue. I want to learn MORE."

I want to prove yesterday wasn't luck.

I want to prove I'm WORTHY of that respect.

Corvus finally looked up, and his eyes widened slightly when he saw Nyx draped across my shoulders.

"You have a familiar."

"I have a familiar," I confirmed, unable to keep the pride out of my voice. "It showed up last night. Apparently I'm WORTHY of an ancient Shadowviper's attention."

Validation.

Sweet, intoxicating VALIDATION.

Corvus studied Nyx for a long moment, and I saw genuine respect flicker across his skeletal features.

"Shadowvipers only bond with mages who have significant potential for dark magic," he said slowly. "Ancient bloodline. Extremely rare. Extremely SELECTIVE."

Significant potential.

FUCK YES.

The expert just confirmed I'm SPECIAL.

"It also has a sarcastic personality and enjoys mocking me," I added. "We're perfect for each other."

Nyx's tongue flicked out in what I was absolutely certain was agreement.

Corvus's lips twitched—almost a smile. Almost.

"Good. You'll need a familiar for the advanced work." He stood, moving toward a table I hadn't noticed before. "Now let's see if yesterday was skill or simply beginner's luck."

There it is.

The CHALLENGE.

The TEST.

My heart started pounding.

What if it WAS luck?

What if I can't do it again?

What if yesterday was a fluke and I'm about to humiliate myself in front of the one person whose respect I actually WANT?

Corvus gestured to the table.

Three dead rats lay there in a neat row.

"Animate them," he said simply. "Show me what you can do."

The temperature in the library seemed to drop.

Three rats.

Not one bird.

THREE RATS.

This is DIFFERENT.

This is HARDER.

I approached the table, and suddenly all that manic confidence from this morning felt very, very far away.

What if I fail?

What if I can't do it?

What if yesterday was just—

No.

NO.

Yesterday was POWER.

Yesterday was PROOF.

And today I'm going to do it AGAIN.

I rolled up my sleeves, feeling Nyx shift on my shoulders, and met Corvus's eyes.

He was watching me with that same intense focus from yesterday. Evaluating. Judging. Waiting to see if I was WORTHY.

This is it.

This is where I prove I'm not just lucky.

This is where I prove I'm LEGENDARY.

"Let's begin," I said, and my voice only shook a little.

Corvus smiled—that same genuine smile from yesterday.

"Yes," he said softly. "Let's see what you're truly capable of, Isabel Nyx Raven."

Oh FUCK.

This is REAL.

This is where everything changes.

This is where I either prove myself—

Or fail SPECTACULARLY.

No pressure.

No pressure AT ALL.

I reached for the first rat, and my hand was shaking.

Here we go.
