Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The American TV Universe System

Chapter 2: The American TV Universe System

The next day. Medford Middle School. Lunchtime.

Owen and Bianca sat across from each other at one of the long cafeteria tables, trays of questionable pizza between them.

"There he is."

Bianca's eyes swept the room, landed on a small, serious-looking figure sitting alone near the far wall, and she immediately stood up. "Okay, you see him. I'm out."

"Fair enough."

Owen didn't blame her. Bianca was sixteen and had a social reputation to protect. Being spotted hanging around her twelve-year-old sort-of-brother on school grounds was already a stretch. She'd done her part.

School Library.

Nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper stood at the returns desk with the quiet dignity of a man who had tried his best and failed through no fault of his own.

He slid the copy of How to Win Friends and Influence People across the counter.

The techniques had not worked.

On his way out, he nearly walked into a Vietnamese kid sitting against the wall reading a thick book on model rocketry. His name, Owen would later learn, was Tam Nguyen — a freshman with exactly zero friends and an encyclopedic knowledge of solid-fuel propellants.

The two of them started talking.

Within four minutes they had covered orbital mechanics, Robert Goddard, and why the school's science curriculum was, in Sheldon's words, "a criminal waste of everyone's time." They had more in common than either of them knew what to do with.

Then they said goodbye.

Sheldon pushed through the library door, stepped into the hallway, stopped — and turned around.

He pushed the door back open, walked directly to Tam, and announced: "I've been thinking. If you haven't secured a friend yet, I have good news. I'm available. We could be friends."

Tam stared at him. "...Sure."

"Excellent."

"I'm in, too."

Owen stepped forward from the shelf he'd been browsing beside, hands in his pockets.

Sheldon looked up at him with genuine surprise. "You want to be my friend?"

"Why not?" Owen shrugged. "Three's better than two."

Sheldon tilted his head. For a half second, something flickered behind his eyes — the mental image, Owen guessed, of his mother's hopeful face every time she asked him how school went.

He nodded. "Alright then. Goodness. Two friends in a single afternoon. I'm on a streak."

Ding.

Owen had come here mostly out of nostalgia — the kind of fond, familiar feeling you get when you see a character you grew up watching. He hadn't expected anything more than that.

He was wrong.

The moment Sheldon nodded, a calm, clear voice sounded inside Owen's mind:

"Approval of a Destiny Protagonist acquired. The American Universe System is now online."

Owen went very still.

There it is.

He kept his expression neutral and quickly turned his attention inward, reaching for whatever had just switched on inside him.

A panel materialized in his mind, clean and precise, like a heads-up display:

AMERICAN UNIVERSE SYSTEMOwner: Owen Carter Status: Active

EXISTENCE POINTS: 88 (Positive Pole: 0 pts | Negative Pole: 500 pts)

Positive Pole points are generated through genuine connection — friendship, loyalty, belonging. Negative Pole points accumulate through loss, regret, and unresolved debt. When the two poles collide, they produce Existence Points — effectively lifespan. One point = one year. One point is consumed annually. Points may be exchanged for personal attribute upgrades.

WILD CARDS: 0 (Special ability unlock keys. Earned through significant story moments. Used to unlock skills from the Skill List.)

ATTRIBUTES:

Intelligence: Lv 3 — Knowledgeable (1: Dull → 2: Average → 3: Knowledgeable → 4: Talented → 5: Genius → 6: Super Genius → 7: Omniscient)

Strength: Lv 2 — Normal (1: Weak → 2: Normal → 3: Peak Human → 4: Superhuman ≤25 tons → 5: ≤75 tons → 6: ≤100 tons → 7: Incalculable)

Speed: Lv 2 — Normal (1: Slow → 2: Normal → 3: Peak Human ≤700 kph → 4: Supersonic → 5: Hypersonic → 6: Lightspeed → 7: Warp)

Stamina: Lv 2+ — Normal+ (1: Weak → 2: Normal → 3: Enhanced → 4: Regenerative → 5: Bulletproof → 6: Superhuman → 7: Near-Immortal)

Owen said his goodbyes to Sheldon and Tam, made a mental note to find them again tomorrow, and ducked into a quiet corner of the hallway.

"System," he thought deliberately.

"Yes, Owner. How can I help?"

"Let's start at the beginning," Owen thought. "What are you, where did you come from, and are there any fail conditions — missions I have to complete or get deleted?"

"No deletion protocols exist. No mandatory fail states. The System's origin is untraced, but its existence is tied entirely to you — it exists because you do. You have full authority over it. Think of it less like a handler and more like a toolkit."

Owen exhaled slowly. That was the answer he'd been hoping for.

"Alright. The attributes make sense. But walk me through the Poles. I've got 500 Negative already and zero Positive. How does that work?"

"The world you've been placed in is a Positive Pole Universe — anchored by the Big Bang Theory timeline and expanded to include the broader connected universe of American network comedies and films. Think of it as the bright side of the dial.

But a battery needs two poles to generate power. Positive alone produces nothing. Only when Positive and Negative collide — like matter and antimatter — do they produce Existence Points capable of sustaining you across multiple universes.

Your Negative Pole debt is what funds your starting balance. The 88 Existence Points you currently have came from the collision of the 88 Positive your predecessor earned in his short life against the first 88 of the 500 Negative Points in debt. You have 412 Negative remaining."

"Okay, but where did 500 Negative come from?" Owen pressed. "I was nobody."

A pause.

"Owner... did you, at some point in your previous life, start writing a story — then abandon it without finishing?"

Owen's expression went flat.

"...Yeah."

"The readers' accumulated disappointment registered as 500 points of Negative debt. In the original course of events, that debt would have manifested as a life marked by persistent bad luck and unfulfilled potential."

"I wrote maybe thirty thousand words," Owen said, slightly defensive. "Barely anyone read it."

"As a longtime reader yourself, Owner, I think you understand."

Owen was quiet for a moment.

"...Fair."

He moved on. "How do I generate Positive Pole points?"

"Through your relationships with Destiny Protagonists — the main characters of this universe. Each relationship has three tiers: Friend, Close Friend, and Best Friend.

At the Friend level, one Destiny Protagonist generates 12 Positive Pole points per year for you. Those 12 points collide with 12 of your Negative Pole debt, producing 12 Existence Points — one year of lifespan.

At Close Friend: 100 points per year, per protagonist.

At Best Friend: 365 points per year — effectively one Existence Point per day.

Once your 500-point Negative debt is cleared, new Negative Pole universes become accessible — Marvel, DC, and others. You can enter them, complete designated story missions, and earn fresh Negative Pole points to collide with the Positive you've built up here, converting everything into Existence Points you can carry across universes."

Owen leaned against the wall and let that settle.

Sheldon Cooper. The Big Bang Theory universe. A system that rewarded him for genuine human connection with the most brilliant and socially catastrophic people in television history.

He almost laughed.

"So the whole plan," Owen said slowly, "is to become friends with Sheldon Lee Cooper."

"Among others, yes."

Owen looked down the hallway toward the library doors.

"I can work with that."
