The final bell of the literature period echoed through the halls like a tolling bell. While the other students scrambled to their next classes, Raphael remained seated, his arm still draped around Dafne's shoulders as she rested against him. He waited until the room had cleared of everyone except Leo, Maya, and Chloe, who stood at the back of the class like a wall of silent protest.
Raphael stood up, pulling Dafne with him. She moved with the fluid, effortless grace of a shadow, her eyes never leaving his.
"The silence here is beginning to fray," Raphael said, smoothing the lapel of his blazer. He turned to Dafne, his voice dropping into that resonant, velvet-coated frequency. "Dafne, the 'noise' in your own home is too much for you right now. We're going to your house. You will pack a bag—enough for a week. You're staying at the Vane Estate tonight. You'll have the north suite. Total quiet. Total safety."
Dafne's chest rose and fell in a shallow, rhythmic breath. "I will pack my things, Raphael."
The Breaking Point"No!" Maya shouted, her voice cracking as she rushed toward them. "You can't just take her! She isn't a piece of luggage, Raphael! You're moving her into your house so you can isolate her completely!"
"Stay back, Maya," Leo warned, though his own hands were balled into fists. "Raphael, you're crossing a line. The Sterlings haven't agreed to this."
"The Sterlings agreed to whatever I deemed necessary for their daughter's 'stability,'" Raphael countered, his eyes flashing with a cold, sharp light. He stepped toward Maya, his presence suddenly looming and aggressive. "You've spent weeks making her scream, Maya. You've poked at her glitch until she couldn't stand the sight of you. I'm the one cleaning up your mess."
"You're the one who caused it!" Maya screamed, reaching out to grab Dafne's arm to pull her away.
Raphael's reaction was instantaneous. He intercepted Maya's hand, his grip crushing, and pulled his other fist back. The look on his face was one of pure, unrestrained violence. He wasn't just protecting his "property"; he was going to break the person who dared to touch it.
"Raphael."
The voice was hollow, a dry whisper that seemed to come from a deep, dark well. Raphael's fist froze inches from Maya's face.
Dafne stood between them, her face a mask of porcelain perfection, but her eyes were wide, reflecting a flicker of the girl who used to exist. She didn't look at Maya, and she didn't look at Leo. She looked only at the floor.
"Let's go already," Dafne said, her voice devoid of any inflection, a flat, mechanical monotone. "Take me away. Leave them alone. The noise is too much. Just... take me to the quiet."
Raphael lowered his hand, his breathing heavy as he stared at her. A slow, triumphant smirk spread across his face. He had won. He didn't even have to strike; his control had become so absolute that she was now begging for her own cage.
"As you wish, Dafne," Raphael murmured. He turned back to the trio, his eyes dancing with malice. "You heard her. You're nothing but noise to her now. Stay away from the Estate. If I see any of you near my gates, I won't be as patient as I was just now."
He tucked Dafne's arm into his and led her out of the classroom.
Maya collapsed into a chair, her face buried in her hands as she sobbed. Leo stared at the empty doorway, his pulse thundering in his ears.
"She's protecting us," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling. "She asked him to leave us alone. Even like that... she's trying to save us."
"It's not enough," Leo said, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "We're going to the Vane Estate tonight. If we don't break that 'silence' now, she'll never come back out."
"It's not enough," Leo said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl that echoed off the empty desks. He turned to the group, his eyes burning with a cold, desperate resolve. "Maya, julliet and Chloe—gather whatever you need. We're going to the Estate tonight. I will find the security bypass codes, and I know exactly where he will keep those files. We're going to find the Henderson records, burn his leverage to the ground, and we're bringing Dafne home. If we don't break that 'silence' tonight, there won't be anything left of her to save."
