Chapter 9 - Chapter–9– Echoes Beneath the City

An hour later, the train begins slowing as it approaches Tokyo Station.

The rhythmic clatter of the tracks gradually fades into a long metallic screech as the train glides into the platform.

With a soft hiss, the doors slide open.

A rush of city air pours inside, thick with the scent of roasted coffee, warm asphalt, and faint traces of fried street food drifting from nearby vendors.

"Tokyo, baby!"

Yuki exclaims immediately.

She practically jumps out of her seat.

The four girls step out onto the crowded platform and are instantly swallowed by the flowing sea of commuters.

People move in every direction.

Businessmen in dark suits.

Tourists holding maps.

Students laughing loudly with backpacks slung over their shoulders.

Despite visiting Tokyo before, the sight still fills the group with excitement.

The towering buildings beyond the station rise like giants above the city streets.

Endless streams of people move like rivers through the crosswalks.

And above everything

Massive LED screens flash colorful advertisements that paint the streets in shifting light.

Yuki's eyes sparkle like a child entering a candy store.

She spins around excitedly, already scanning every nearby shop window.

"Ooooh! Look at that store!"

Before anyone can respond

She dashes ahead.

"Yuki! WAIT!"

Ami calls out.

Too late.

Yuki is already several steps ahead, nearly skipping through the crowd.

Rin watches her go with a sigh.

"Yuki's in her natural habitat."

She folds her arms as they begin walking after her.

Fumiko smiles softly.

"She really loves this place."

The four girls exit the station and step onto the bustling street.

Their destination, Tokyo Mall, is only a short walk away.

Neon lights flicker everywhere.

Towering digital billboards play advertisements in dazzling colors.

The city hums with life.

Street performers play guitars near intersections.

Couples walk hand in hand past glowing shop windows.

A distant bass line from a nearby club pulses faintly through the air.

Fumiko takes a slow breath.

The energy of Tokyo feels overwhelming but exciting.

For a moment, she almost forgets everything that happened last night.

Almost.

Inside Tokyo Mall, the atmosphere becomes even louder.

Music plays softly through overhead speakers.

Bright displays fill every store window.

The girls waste no time diving into their shopping adventure.

Rin immediately gravitates toward a rack of leather jackets.

She pulls out a sleek black one and slips it on.

Then she walks to the mirror and strikes an exaggerated tough pose.

She tilts her chin upward.

"Cool~"

She flexes her arm dramatically.

"Do I look like a motorcycle gang leader yet?"

Ami bursts out laughing.

"You look like a kid who stole her older brother's jacket."

Fumiko giggles quietly.

Rin glares at them through the mirror.

"Rude."

Meanwhile, Ami and Fumiko browse through racks of casual clothes.

Baggy jeans.

Soft sweaters.

Loose graphic shirts.

Ami holds up a light blue hoodie.

"What do you think?"

Fumiko tilts her head.

"It suits you."

Ami grins.

"Good taste."

On the other side of the store

Yuki has already found a bright display of skirts and colorful tank tops.

She holds up a neon pink skirt and twirls dramatically.

"Ta-da!"

Rin squints.

"WHOA."

She shields her eyes.

"That thing is practically glowing."

She raises an eyebrow.

"Planning to blind someone?"

Yuki gasps in offense.

"It's called fashion!, Rin-chan."

She flips her hair.

"You wouldn't understand."

Rin rolls her eyes.

"Yeah yeah."

The girls continue laughing and teasing each other while trying on clothes.

For a while

Everything feels carefree.

Normal.

Like ordinary teenage girls enjoying a day out.

Eventually, after several stores and far too many purchases

They leave the mall carrying multiple shopping bags.

"Food time!"

Ami declares.

The others immediately agree.

Their first stop is a bubble tea stand.

The colorful menu board glows above them.

Yuki points enthusiastically.

"I want strawberry!"

"Matcha for me,"

Ami says.

"Brown sugar milk tea,"

Rin adds.

All three turn toward Fumiko.

She thinks for a moment.

"Taro for me."

A few minutes later, they stand together sipping their drinks through thick straws.

"Mm! This is good,"

Yuki says happily.

Next comes street snacks.

Takoyaki sizzling on a hot grill.

Yakitori skewers dripping with sauce.

Taiyaki pastries filled with warm red bean paste.

The four girls wander down the street while eating.

By the time they finish

Their arms are full of shopping bags.

Their stomachs pleasantly full.

And their energy slightly drained.

Later, while wandering through a quieter side street

Fumiko suddenly slows down.

Something catches her attention.

Above them—

A massive LED screen glows against the side of a building.

A live sports interview is playing.

A young man sits confidently in front of the camera.

His sharp eyes.

His relaxed smile.

His slightly messy dark red hair.

Even through the screen

His presence feels powerful.

The host's voice echoes from the speakers.

"Ryuji Takahashi."

The name rings through the street.

"The star of last night's incredible match."

The camera zooms in slightly.

Ryuji smiles modestly.

"It was a team effort,"

he says calmly.

"I just happened to finish the plays."

Fumiko stops walking completely.

Her breath catches.

Something strange happens.

For a split second

Her vision flickers.

A sudden flash appears in her mind.

A battlefield.

Dark skies.

A man standing in the center of a blood-soaked ground.

Staring down at their sword dripping with crimson.

His back turned.

Silent.

Unmoving.

Her head suddenly throbs with pain.

"Ah–!"

Fumiko grips her temple.

Her breathing becomes uneven.

The image vanishes as quickly as it came.

The street sounds return.

People talking.

Cars passing.

But her heart is pounding wildly.

Her eyes remain locked on the screen.

On Ryuji.

'Why…?'

Her thoughts feel tangled.

'Why does he feel familiar?'

She has never met him before.

Yet something inside her chest reacts to him.

Like an echo.

Like a memory that refuses to surface.

Her heartbeat grows louder in her ears.

Everything else fades.

Then

"Fumi!"

Ami's voice breaks through.

Fumiko blinks suddenly.

The vision disappears completely.

Ami and the others stand a few meters ahead.

"Come on!"

Ami waves her over.

"We're heading to the next street!"

Fumiko quickly nods.

"R-Right!"

She hurries toward them.

But the strange feeling doesn't disappear.

It lingers quietly inside her chest.

Like a shadow.

Ami slows her pace so they walk side by side.

She glances at Fumiko carefully.

"Hey…"

Her voice softens.

"You okay?"

Fumiko forces a small smile.

"Yeah."

Ami studies her face.

"You seem… distracted."

Fumiko looks down at the pavement.

"Just thinking."

Ami raises an eyebrow.

"About what?"

Fumiko hesitates.

Then shrugs.

"Nothing important."

Ami clearly doesn't believe that.

But she lets it go.

"Well."

She nudges Fumiko lightly.

"Try to enjoy the day, okay?"

"No overthinking."

Fumiko nods.

"Thanks, Ami."

They exchange a quiet smile.

Then they catch up to Rin and Yuki again.

By early evening, the four girls finally collapse onto a bench in a small park near the station.

Shopping bags pile around their feet.

Yuki stretches dramatically.

"I had sooo much fun today!"

She swings one of her bags like a hammock.

Ami chuckles.

"You say that every time."

Rin rubs the back of her neck awkwardly.

"I guess…"

She glances at the others.

"…hanging out with friends isn't such a bad thing."

Fumiko grins.

"Look who's talking."

She leans closer.

"Our tough tomboy finally enjoying a girls' day."

Rin's face turns slightly red.

"Hey!"

She points at Fumiko accusingly.

"Don't make it weird!"

The others laugh.

Ami checks her watch.

"Oh wow."

She straightens up.

"It's already seven."

Her tone becomes slightly serious.

"We should head back soon."

Yuki groans dramatically.

"Noooo!!."

She flops backward against the bench.

"Why do good days end so fast?"

Rin puffs out her chest proudly.

"Relax."

She cracks her knuckles playfully.

"You've got your personal bodyguard right here."

She gestures to herself.

"I'll protect everyone until we're safely home."

Ami snorts.

"From what?"

"Shopping discounts?"

The girls burst into laughter again.

Soon they gather their bags.

And begin walking back toward the station.

A few minutes after they leave

The park becomes quiet.

The evening crowd thins out.

Streetlights flicker on one by one.

A cold breeze sweeps through the empty space.

Near the bench where the girls had been sitting

Something strange happens.

A small stone rests near the base of the bench.

At first, it looks ordinary.

But then–

It pulses.

A faint, oily black glow spreads across its surface.

The air around it grows colder.

The ground beneath it trembles.

Just slightly.

Barely noticeable.

Then

Crack.

A thin fracture forms in the pavement beneath the stone.

The crack slowly spreads.

Darkness seeps from the opening like thick smoke.

The glow intensifies.

The ground trembles again.

From the darkness below

Something begins to stir.

Something ancient.

Something hungry.

And somewhere deep within the city

That darkness has already begun searching.
