Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Truth Between Us (Final Chapter)

The evening sky had turned a deep shade of blue when Ezra finally reached home. Streetlights flickered on one by one along the quiet road, casting soft yellow circles of light on the pavement. Normally he would go straight inside, drop his bag near the door, and relax after a long day at school. But tonight was different. His mind was still focused on the message that had appeared on his phone only minutes earlier.

"Hey, can we talk?"

The message from Michael felt simple, yet it carried a weight Ezra couldn't ignore. For the past week, a strange distance had grown between them, filled with unanswered questions and silent misunderstandings. And now, for the first time, Michael had directly asked to talk.

Ezra stood near the small gate outside his house, staring at the screen again. A cool breeze moved through the trees, rustling the leaves softly. Part of him wanted to reply immediately, to finally clear the confusion that had been building inside his mind. But another part of him hesitated.

What if the truth wasn't what he expected?

After a long moment, Ezra took a deep breath and typed a response.

"Yeah. We should."

He pressed send before he could change his mind.

Only a few seconds passed before the phone vibrated again.

"Basketball court near school. Tomorrow after class?"

Ezra looked at the message, thinking briefly. The basketball court had always been a place where he and Michael spent time together—sometimes playing, sometimes just talking about random things after school.

It felt like the right place to settle things.

"Okay," Ezra replied.

That night, neither of them slept easily.

---

The next day at Maplewood High School passed slower than usual.

For Michael, every class felt longer than normal. He tried to focus on lessons and assignments, but his thoughts kept drifting toward the conversation that would happen later. He wasn't sure what Ezra had heard or what he believed, but he knew one thing for certain: their friendship was too important to lose because of silence.

Across the hallway, Ezra was feeling the same tension.

When the final bell rang in the afternoon, students quickly began leaving their classrooms, filling the corridors with noise and movement. But Ezra didn't rush out like everyone else. Instead, he packed his bag slowly, taking a moment to calm his thoughts.

Outside the school building, the air felt fresh and slightly cool. The basketball court sat behind the school near the tall fence that separated the campus from a small park.

When Ezra arrived, he saw Michael already there.

Michael was standing near the court with a basketball resting under his arm. The moment he noticed Ezra approaching, his posture straightened slightly.

For a brief second, neither of them spoke.

It felt strange standing there after days of awkward silence.

Finally, Michael broke it.

"Thanks for coming."

Ezra shrugged lightly.

"You asked to talk."

Michael nodded slowly. He bounced the basketball once against the ground before catching it again.

"So… something's been off lately," he said.

Ezra looked at the court lines painted on the ground.

"Yeah."

Michael watched him carefully.

"Did I do something wrong?"

Ezra hesitated.

Part of him wanted to avoid the conversation entirely, but he knew that wouldn't solve anything.

So he spoke honestly.

"A few days ago," Ezra began slowly, "I heard you talking with Aubrey near the lockers."

Michael frowned slightly, trying to remember.

"You said something about not knowing your feelings," Ezra continued. "And she said something about liking you."

Michael's eyes widened slightly as the memory returned.

"Oh."

Ezra finally looked at him.

"I didn't hear the whole conversation," he admitted. "Just part of it."

Michael sighed quietly, realizing what had happened.

"That explains a lot," he said.

Ezra crossed his arms.

"So it's true?"

Michael shook his head quickly.

"Not the way you probably think."

Ezra frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Michael leaned against the fence beside the court.

"Aubrey did confess that she liked me," he explained. "But I didn't know how I felt yet. That's what you overheard."

Ezra listened carefully.

"But that conversation had nothing to do with our friendship," Michael continued. "And it definitely wasn't something I was hiding from you."

Ezra looked slightly embarrassed.

"I guess I jumped to conclusions."

Michael gave a small laugh.

"A little."

For the first time in days, the tension between them began to fade.

Ezra rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"I should have just asked you."

"Yeah," Michael said with a smile. "You probably should have."

They stood there quietly for a moment before Michael spoke again.

"You know something?" he said.

"What?"

"You're a terrible detective."

Ezra laughed.

"Thanks."

Michael tossed the basketball lightly toward him.

Ezra caught it instinctively.

"You still want to play?" Michael asked.

Ezra looked at the ball in his hands and smiled slightly.

"Yeah."

A few minutes later, the sound of a basketball bouncing echoed across the court as the two friends played like they had countless times before.

The awkward distance that had formed between them slowly disappeared with every pass and every laugh.

Across the street near the school gate, Yuri and Aubrey were watching from a distance.

Yuri folded her arms confidently.

"See?" she said. "I told you they'd figure it out."

Aubrey smiled softly.

"I'm glad they did."

The two girls watched as Michael made a shot and Ezra groaned dramatically after missing the next one.

Everything finally felt normal again.

Sometimes friendships don't break because of big problems.

Sometimes they just get tangled in small misunderstandings.

But the strongest friendships are the ones that choose honesty over silence.

And for Ezra, Michael, Yuri, and Aubrey, their story had proven one simple truth.

When four hearts are connected by trust and friendship…

Even misunderstandings can lead to stronger bonds.

The End.
