Silas saw the plain road ahead blocked by a wired fence as they finally drove out of the last of the grooves. Neither he nor Salvar had realized when they reached the end of the forest. The hospital road lay just beyond, frustratingly close and completely inaccessible.
"I think it's exactly for people like us," Salvar said, pointing his thumb at himself and then directing his index finger toward Silas.
"It's for wild animals." Silas looked around at the circumference and the extension of the wired fence. "And no wonder. You count as one as well."
Silas turned off the engine and stepped out of the car. Salvar followed, and they both raised their heads to look at the fencing that stood almost taller than either of them.
Salvar rested his hands on his hips and stared at the obstacle for a long moment. Then he walked forward, gripped the wire with his good hand, and lodged his feet into the gaps between the metal links. He began to climb, unsuccessfully.
