Chapter 2 — Memories of Another Life

Ethan sat on the edge of his dorm bed, quiet. The sunlight streamed through the tall windows, falling in golden lines across the floor. Outside, students moved in groups, laughing and carrying spellbooks or wooden swords. Teachers walked between them, calling instructions. The academy hummed with life.

But Ethan wasn't thinking about that.

He was thinking about three lives.

First life, Earth.

Ordinary streets, ordinary smells, ordinary sounds. Cars honking, people shouting, dogs barking. Books stacked everywhere, papers scattered, tea cups forgotten. He had been twenty years old, living a life that seemed unremarkable.

But he wasn't ordinary.

Observation, analysis, strategy—he had always noticed what others missed. Patterns in people, in events, even in simple

conversations. That intelligence had kept him ahead, had let him survive situations most would fail. And it had saved him later, in ways he hadn't imagined..

He had read a story. A story of another world

—Aetherion. Heroes, magic, monsters. Adrian Valcrest defeating the Abyss Sovereign. Heroines fighting beside him. Humanity surviving against impossible odds.

That ending was clean, perfect, heroic.

Second life, first reincarnation.

He had been born in Aetherion. The world was real, alive, dangerous. Mana hummed in the air. Monsters roamed the forests. Cities and villages teetered on the edge of destruction.

He trained. He observed. He survived.

But he had done nothing about the story.

Adrian, the OG ML, and the heroines fought as expected. But it wasn't perfect.

The Abyss Sovereign didn't die as easily. Monsters overwhelmed cities. Allies fell. Heroes failed.

By the end of that timeline, he had seen everything collapse. Humanity nearly gone. Adrian's victory, the one he had read about on Earth, hadn't happened. The perfect ending he knew had failed.

That failure had burned into him.

Third life, current life.

Ethan had regressed. Reborn once more with all memories intact: first life on Earth, second life in Aetherion, and the collapse of the timeline.

Now, he knew..

He knew where things went wrong. He knew which heroes would falter. Which allies would be too weak. Which mistakes would cause destruction.

And he had decided.

He would not make the same mistakes. Not again.

A soft ping interrupted his thoughts.

"Big brother! Don't forget to call tonight!"

Lina.

Ethan smiled faintly. She was twelve now. Bright, clever, endlessly curious. Her voice had a warmth that grounded him, reminded him of the world worth protecting.

He picked up the communicator. "Hey, Lina. How's your morning?"

"Good!" she said cheerfully. "I finished my lessons early today. Did you sleep well?"

"I did," he replied. "Studying hard already?"

"Of course! You taught me well, big brother. I practiced the mana circuits like you showed me. I think I'm getting stronger!"

Ethan's lips twitched into a faint smile. She didn't need to know the dangers. She only needed curiosity, discipline, and a little skill to grow.

"You're doing well," he said. "But stay safe. Don't try anything too dangerous yet."

"I know!" she said quickly. "But… why are you always so calm, big brother? Even when I hear about monsters and wars, you don't seem worried.".

Ethan let out a soft breath. "Because I've seen worse. I survived worse. And I learned to think before acting. To plan ahead. That's how I manage, Lina."

Her voice softened. "You're really smart, big brother. I'm glad I have you to look out for me."

"I'll always look out for you. Always," he said quietly.

They ended the call. He set the communicator down and leaned back against the wall.

He thought about Lina again.

She lived in the family's noble estate, guarded by wards, magical enchantments, and trained servants. Her parents, though busy with noble duties, were always nearby. They trusted Ethan completely to look after her.

She spent most of her days in the estate learning magic, practicing etiquette, and growing curious about the world.

Occasionally, she visited the academy for supervised lessons. Safe. Protected. Growing. Curious. That was enough.

Ethan looked out the window at the courtyard. Sunlight glinted off the stone paths. Students practiced magic, sparred with wooden swords, and moved in groups. Everything seemed normal. Safe.

But he knew it wasn't.

The Abyss would rise again. Villainesses would act. Monsters would attack. Even if Adrian survived and defeated the Abyss this time, the heroes could still make mistakes. Allies could fall. Collateral damage could mount.

And that's why he had to intervene.

He didn't need to stop Adrian from winning—he knew the OG ML could still defeat the demon—but he needed to make sure things didn't go wrong again. Protecting the right people. Correcting subtle mistakes. Guiding events without forcing them.

Patience. Observation. Knowledge. Calm.

He remembered a night in his second life. Alone, in a ruined forest, surrounded by monsters, bleeding and exhausted. Every movement calculated. Every breath controlled. Every decision precise.

He had survived because he analyzed, adapted, and stayed calm.

That intelligence, honed on Earth, had kept him alive once. The same intelligence, combined with what he had learned in the second life, would allow him to protect this world.

He glanced back at the academy grounds. First-years practicing spells, second-years sparring, older students training with swords. Adrian and the heroines moved across the courtyard, unaware of how close the collapse had been in the previous timeline.

Ethan knew their weaknesses. He knew the dangers they couldn't yet see. And he knew his role. Quiet, careful, subtle. Intervention, but never too early. Teaching, nudging, protecting. All while appearing normal.

The story had begun again.

And this time, he would change it.

Slowly. Carefully. Step by step.

Not with force. Not with show. But with patience, observation, and guidance.

His first life had taught him intelligence. His second life had taught him survival.

This third life would teach him how to protect the world without breaking the story.

The second beginning had started. And he was ready.
