The dust from the fallen beast began to settle, but the city was far from quiet. Screams still echoed from the neighboring streets as more shadows poured from the purple rift. Raj stood over the carcass of the monster he had just slain. His blue eyes glowed brighter as a new notification appeared on his system screen.

[Success Rate: 100%]
"Arise," Raj whispered, his voice sounding deeper than before.
Suddenly, the black smoke rising from the dead monster started to swirl and solidify. From the darkness, the same beast that had just been killed rose again, but its body was now made of flickering violet flames and shadows. It bowed its head to Raj, waiting for his command.

Before Raj could process his new power, three more monsters emerged from the ruins of a nearby shop. They were smaller but faster, with long, whip-like tails. They hissed, sensing the dark energy radiating from the boy.
Raj didn't flinch. He pointed his finger at the oncoming pack. "Kill them," he commanded.
His Shadow Stalker lunged forward like a bolt of lightning. In a blur of claws and darkness, the three monsters were torn apart before they could even reach him. Raj watched coldly, feeling no pity. He realized that to survive this new world, he would have to become its greatest nightmare.
