Chapter 13 - The Ruined Outskirts

The road out of Ironvale was quiet at dawn.

Mist drifted low over the fields, turning the farmland beyond the walls into pale shapes and shadows. Wagons creaked through the gates. A pair of early adventurers argued with a guard about permits. Somewhere behind Soren a merchant cursed at a stubborn mule.

Soren ignored all of it.

He stepped past the gate and kept walking until the stone road gave way to packed dirt.

Then he left the road entirely.

The further he went, the fewer people there were.

Farms appeared first small plots of land, crooked fences, abandoned wells. Some houses still stood, but their windows were broken and their doors hung loose on rusted hinges.

Past those… the ruins began.

Collapsed stone walls.

Burned timber frames.

Fields swallowed by waist‑high weeds.

Monsters had pushed closer to the city over the years. The farmers left long before the guards could clear the area.

Which made the outskirts perfect.

No witnesses.

No questions.

Just monsters.

Soren stopped beside the broken foundation of what had once been a house.

He exhaled slowly.

"Status."

A familiar window appeared in his vision.

Step Shift (Prototype)

Edge Alignment

```
Three abilities.
None of them normal.
Observe wasn't supposed to exist like this.
Step Shift was something he had forced together from fragments of movement patterns.
And Edge Alignment…
That one still felt like holding a blade made of unstable glass.
Soren closed the window.
"Let's test," he said quietly.
The wind moved through the weeds.
For a moment nothing happened.
Then Soren focused.
"Observe."
The world sharpened.
Not visually.
Structurally.
Tiny patterns surfaced beneath reality like faint lines drawn over the world.
Movement paths in the grass.
Weight shifts in distant soil.
Heat signatures where small creatures hid beneath broken stone.
The skill was incomplete, but every time he used it the clarity improved.
And today it was different.
More stable.
The interface flickered.
```

Observe Progress: 42%

Pattern Acquisition Increased

```
Soren knelt beside the crumbled wall and watched.
Two minutes passed.
Then the first monster appeared.
It slipped between the weeds with the quiet confidence of something used to hunting weak prey.
Gray fur.
Long legs.
Narrow skull.
A Ruin Hound.
Another shape followed.
Then a third.
A pack.
Soren stood slowly.
Three against one.
Good.
More movement meant more patterns.
The first hound saw him.
Its lips peeled back.
A low growl rolled across the field.
Soren didn't draw his dagger yet.
He watched.
Observe traced the creature's motion muscle tension in its legs, the shift of weight before a lunge.
The attack came exactly when the pattern predicted.
The hound launched forward.
Soren moved.
"Step Shift."
Mana surged through his legs.
For a split second the world lost its sense of distance.
Then it snapped back.
Soren reappeared three steps to the side.
The hound slammed into empty air.
Pain stabbed through Soren's calves.
Too much output.
The pathway inside the skill wasn't balanced yet.
Still
It worked.
Soren turned as the second hound charged.
This time he drew the dagger from his belt.
Observe flared.
The pattern showed him the angle.
He moved before the monster adjusted.
"Edge Alignment."
Mana flowed along the blade.
Not outward.
Inward.
Condensing.
The edge vibrated with a thin, focused pressure that made the air around it feel tight.
The hound lunged.
Soren stepped inside the attack.
One cut.
Clean.
The reinforced edge slid through fur and muscle as if the resistance had been… reduced.
The monster collapsed mid‑stride.
The third hound didn't hesitate.
It rushed him from the side.
Soren shifted his footing.
Observe flickered again.
The skill tried to capture everything at once the hound, the terrain, the broken stones beneath his feet.
Too much information.
The structure trembled.
A spike of pressure hit behind his eyes.
"Not yet," Soren muttered.
He canceled the skill.
The world dulled slightly.
But the patterns he had already seen remained in memory.
The hound snapped at his arm.
Soren twisted.
"Step Shift."
This time the movement was shorter.
Controlled.
Less mana.
The shift carried him behind the creature instead of across the field.
Better.
He struck.
Edge Alignment sharpened the dagger again.
One thrust.
The blade slid between ribs.
The hound dropped instantly.
Silence returned to the ruined field.
Soren stood still for a moment.
Then the system responded.
```

Observe Data Recorded

Movement Pattern: Ruin Hound (Partial)

Skill Stability Increased

```
A faint pulse of satisfaction ran through him.
Not because of the kills.
Because of the data.
He crouched beside one of the corpses.
The wound from Edge Alignment was cleaner than a normal dagger cut. The mana compression had reduced friction along the blade's path.
But the drain had been high.
Too high for repeated use.
"Needs refinement," Soren murmured.
He stood again.
Observe activated briefly only a fraction of a second.
Just long enough to scan the area.
Something else moved deeper in the ruins.
Larger.
He started walking.
The ruined outskirts stretched for several kilometers beyond the farms. Stone houses had once stood here in tight rows.
Now they were skeletons.
Soren passed a collapsed watchtower.
Then a shattered well.
The movement pattern grew clearer as he approached.
Heavy steps.
Slow.
Uncoordinated.
Not a predator.
A scavenger.
Soren slipped between two broken walls and saw it.
A Rotback.
The creature looked like a massive boar covered in patches of hardened gray hide. Thick bone plates jutted along its spine like crude armor.
Much tougher than the hounds.
Perfect.
The Rotback snorted and scraped the ground.
It had already noticed him.
Soren rolled his shoulders.
"Observe."
The skill expanded again.
This time he focused only on the monster.
The pattern formed more clearly than before.
Weight distribution.
Charging angles.
Weak joints beneath the bone plates.
But maintaining the skill during combat strained his concentration.
The Rotback charged.
Fast.
Faster than something that size should move.
Soren stepped forward instead of away.
"Step Shift."
Mana burst through his legs.
The world slid sideways.
He reappeared beside the creature as it thundered past.
Better control.
Less backlash.
The improvement was immediate.
Edge Alignment ignited along the dagger.
Soren struck at the exposed joint behind the front leg.
The blade bit deep.
The Rotback screamed.
It twisted violently.
Too fast.
The creature's shoulder slammed into Soren's chest and threw him across the dirt.
He rolled, breath knocked from his lungs.
"Good," he coughed.
Pain meant information.
The Rotback charged again.
Observe flared.
This time the pattern showed him the exact moment the creature shifted its weight to turn.
Soren moved early.
Step Shift carried him behind the monster.
Edge Alignment cut again.
Deeper.
The same joint.
The Rotback staggered.
Soren didn't stop.
Observe pulsed in short bursts.
Half a second.
Cancel.
Half a second.
Cancel.
Each glimpse gave him another fragment of the pattern.
Another weakness.
Another opening.
The fight accelerated.
Shift.
Cut.
Move.
Cut again.
The Rotback swung wildly, smashing broken stones and tearing up dirt.
But its movements were predictable now.
Soren stepped inside its final charge.
Edge Alignment condensed along the dagger one last time.
He drove the blade straight through the weakened joint.
The Rotback collapsed.
Dust drifted slowly through the ruined street.
Soren exhaled.
Then the system spoke.
```

Rotback defeated

```
A surge of energy ran through his body.
Muscles steadied.
Fatigue faded.
Then another notification appeared.
```

Observe Progress Increased

Skill Interaction Detected

Step Shift Stability Improved

Edge Alignment Efficiency Increased

```
Soren stared at the messages for a long moment.
Combat data.
The system had integrated it.
The skills were adapting.
Exactly like he hoped.
He looked out across the ruins.
Weeds swayed between the broken houses.
Somewhere deeper in the outskirts another monster howled.
Soren sheathed his dagger.
A faint smile touched the corner of his mouth.
"Good," he said.
Then he started walking toward the sound.
