Chapter 53 - The Forge District

The forge district sounded alive.

Not in the way a battlefield lived through movement and danger.

Not in the way training grounds echoed with competition.

This was different.

Every sound carried purpose.

Hammers struck metal in measured rhythms.

Furnaces roared behind reinforced walls.

Steam hissed from pressure valves built into massive workstations.

The entire district felt like the beating heart of something much larger.

Kai stepped through the main workshop entrance.

Heat immediately washed over him.

Not unbearable.

Just enough to remind everyone inside that creation demanded effort.

The workshop was enormous.

Rows of forging stations stretched across the building.

Students worked beside craftsmen.

Metal glowed orange beneath powerful furnace flames.

Partially completed weapons rested on nearby racks.

Swords.

Spears.

Axes.

Armor.

Shields.

Equipment designed for survival beyond the academy walls.

Kai moved deeper into the workshop.

Nobody paid much attention to him.

At least initially.

Everyone seemed focused on their own projects.

Then someone recognized him.

A student carrying a crate slowed.

His eyes widened slightly.

"That's him."

The comment spread.

Not loudly.

Not enough to interrupt work.

But enough.

Several heads turned.

Kai ignored it.

His attention remained on the forge itself.

The place fascinated him.

Not because of the weapons.

Not because of the flames.

Because of the crystals.

They were everywhere.

Embedded into blades.

Mixed into metal.

Stored inside secured containers.

The instructor from the seminar hadn't exaggerated.

Crystals had countless uses.

Kai stopped near a display case.

Inside rested several completed weapons.

Each looked ordinary at first glance.

Then he noticed the crystal integrations.

Tiny fragments.

Perfectly placed.

One sword possessed a faint blue glow running through its edge.

Another spear contained embedded crystal veins along the shaft.

A shield displayed layered crystal plates beneath reinforced steel.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"Looking for something specific?"

The voice came from behind him.

Kai turned.

An older craftsman stood nearby.

Broad shoulders.

Scarred hands.

Gray hair tied behind his head.

Unlike most instructors, this man looked capable of fighting just as well as forging.

"Maybe."

The craftsman chuckled.

"That's usually how it starts."

He stepped beside the display case.

"Most students walk in here thinking crystals only make people stronger."

His gaze moved toward the weapons.

"They're only seeing half the picture."

Kai listened.

The craftsman continued.

"A crystal stores potential."

He tapped the display case lightly.

"You can absorb that potential."

His finger shifted toward the weapons.

"Or shape it."

Kai nodded slowly.

That matched what he'd learned yesterday.

The craftsman folded his arms.

"You carrying any?"

Kai hesitated briefly.

Then nodded.

The older man grinned.

"Thought so."

He motioned toward a nearby workbench.

"Let's see them."

Kai approached.

Several students nearby immediately pretended not to watch.

It didn't work.

They were absolutely watching.

Kai opened his storage interface mentally.

A small collection of beast crystals appeared in his hand moments later.

The craftsman's eyebrows rose.

"Been saving these."

"Yes."

"Good."

The response surprised Kai.

Most people encouraged absorption.

This man seemed pleased he hadn't.

The craftsman picked up one crystal.

Examined it.

Rotated it beneath the light.

"Solid quality."

He set it down.

Picked up another.

Then another.

Minutes passed.

Finally—

He nodded.

"You've got options."

Kai waited.

The craftsman pointed toward several diagrams mounted on the wall.

"Weapons."

One finger.

"Armor."

Second finger.

"Storage devices."

Third.

"Enhancement equipment."

Fourth.

Kai studied the diagrams.

Each showed different crystal applications.

Some focused on power.

Others durability.

Others utility.

The possibilities seemed nearly endless.

A system notification appeared.

QUEST PROGRESS

Crystal Efficiency

3/5 Analysis Objectives Completed

The notification vanished.

The craftsman hadn't noticed.

Nobody ever did.

One of the many advantages of the system.

"What would you recommend?"

Kai asked.

The craftsman considered the question.

Then surprised him.

"I wouldn't recommend anything."

Kai raised an eyebrow.

The older man laughed.

"Too many students chase someone else's path."

He pointed directly at Kai.

"You fight with a sword."

Kai nodded.

"Then learn your sword first."

Simple.

Direct.

Logical.

The craftsman leaned against the workbench.

"Figure out what you're lacking."

His gaze sharpened.

"Then build around that."

Not around trends.

Not around other people.

Around himself.

Kai understood.

The advice carried more value than any blueprint.

A few moments later he stored the crystals again.

Not using them.

Not forging them yet.

Just thinking.

Planning.

The forge would still be here later.

Rushing a decision now would accomplish nothing.

The craftsman seemed satisfied.

"Good."

Kai looked at him.

The older man smiled.

"You didn't come here looking for a weapon."

Kai paused.

"No."

The craftsman nodded.

"Exactly."

That answer seemed enough.

After thanking him, Kai left the workshop.

The afternoon sun sat lower now.

Students moved between buildings.

Classes shifted.

Training rotations changed.

The academy never truly stopped.

Only adapted.

Kai crossed into the central district.

A large crowd had gathered around the academy notice boards.

More than yesterday.

Much more.

Curiosity pulled him closer.

The reason became obvious immediately.

A new ranking report had been posted.

Not official rank changes.

Performance evaluations.

Mission results.

Combat assessments.

Academy statistics.

Students crowded around them.

Discussing.

Arguing.

Comparing.

Kai wasn't interested.

Until he noticed something unusual.

His name appeared.

Not in rankings.

In observations.

Student Performance Notice

Kai Veyron

Recent Growth Assessment: Exceptional

Combat Adaptability: High

Strategic Development: Above Expected Parameters

Recommended Monitoring Status: Active

Kai stared for a moment.

Then looked away.

He had no desire to become a discussion topic.

Unfortunately—

That opportunity had already passed.

"That's him."

Several nearby students immediately recognized him.

More whispers followed.

Kai continued walking.

Ignoring all of it.

The academy could talk.

He had other things to focus on.

Tomorrow's exercise.

The Great 17.

And the growing number of system quests.

As if responding to the thought—

The system appeared.

NEW QUEST AVAILABLE

Tactical Observation

Participate in Great 17 Recovery Exercise

Reward:

+350 RP

+200 XP

Bonus Reward: Unknown

Kai accepted immediately.

The screen vanished.

The reward was significant.

Especially the XP.

Much larger than recent gains.

Interesting.

Maybe the system valued strategic growth differently.

That possibility stayed with him as he returned toward the residential district.

The sun continued sinking.

Long shadows stretched across the academy grounds.

Students gradually disappeared into dormitories.

Libraries.

Dining halls.

Training facilities.

Even Marcus wasn't causing problems today.

A rare sight.

The academy felt strangely peaceful.

For now.

Kai knew it wouldn't last.

Tomorrow's exercise would bring competition.

Challenges.

New variables.

Exactly the kind of situation the system liked.

As he approached the dormitory building—

Movement caught his attention.

Not danger.

Just familiarity.

Lena.

She exited a nearby building carrying several books beneath one arm.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then she noticed him.

The small smile appeared again.

Natural.

Consistent.

Not forced.

"Still working?" she asked.

Kai glanced toward the books.

"Looks like you are too."

A faint laugh escaped her.

The expression surprised him.

Because it seemed genuine.

Not polite.

Not practiced.

Real.

"I suppose that's fair."

For several moments they stood there.

No awkwardness.

No pressure.

Just conversation.

Simple.

Then Lena shifted the books slightly.

"Tomorrow should be interesting."

Kai nodded.

"The recovery exercise."

"Yes."

A brief pause followed.

Then Lena looked toward the distant academy walls.

"A lot of people think strength is measured by what happens during a fight."

Her gaze remained forward.

"They're usually wrong."

Kai considered that.

It sounded like something Aiden would say.

Or Victor.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it was true.

Eventually Lena stepped back.

"I'll see you tomorrow."

Kai nodded once.

Then they continued in opposite directions.

No lingering.

No unnecessary words.

Just understanding.

The academy lights began illuminating one by one as evening settled across the grounds.
