Faulty Contract

Chapter 5 – Limit Testing

---

Three days after the control core incident.

The academy increased its level of surveillance.

Rei was moved to Tier-Two Observation.

Not confinement.

Just… continuous monitoring.

---

The central training ground was sealed for a special test.

The Council observed directly.

Elias stood within the inner circle.

"Today's test," one elder spoke,

"is to evaluate the limits of adaptation."

Rei stood in the middle of the magic formation.

No questions.

No objections.

"Conditions?"

"You must maintain activity within an environment of extreme fluctuation."

"Understood."

---

The magic formation activated.

Space twisted.

Gravity increased fivefold.

Air pressure shifted.

Temperature fluctuated from freezing cold to burning heat within seconds.

Rei dropped to one knee.

His body trembled slightly.

His biological systems began reacting.

Heart rate increased.

Muscles contracted.

Sweat evaporated the moment it appeared.

A Council member whispered:

"It's starting."

---

First minute.

Rei simply existed.

No movement.

No resistance against the environment.

Only absorbing data.

Second minute.

Breathing patterns changed.

The body adjusted blood distribution.

Muscle density increased slightly.

The pressure gradually lost its effect.

Third minute.

Rei stood up.

He took one step.

Unsteady.

Second step.

Stable.

Fourth minute.

He moved normally.

---

The system recorded:

«[Spatial Adaptation – Automatic Activation]

[Adjustment Level: Increasing]

[Environmental Learning Speed: Above Standard]»

One elder frowned.

"Increase the difficulty."

The formation shifted.

Space began fragmenting.

Illusions overlapped with reality.

The floor turned into a deep abyss.

Sound interference attacked the nervous system.

This was no longer only physical.

It was a cognitive assault.

Rei stopped.

For a brief instant—

His body could not adjust.

This was something muscles could not measure.

The hallucinations had no clear pattern.

A tear appeared on his shoulder.

Blood flowed.

The Council watched closely.

"The limit lies in perception," someone said.

---

Rei closed his eyes.

Not out of fear.

But to eliminate unstable data.

The distorted space was external stimulus.

If he did not see—

There was no need to process it.

His heart rate slowed.

His body ignored visual signals.

Relying only on real mana fluctuations.

Fifth minute.

Rei opened his eyes.

The tear remained.

But his steps were steady again.

"Impossible…" one elder whispered.

"He reconstructed his method of perception."

---

Elias said nothing.

But the shadow beneath his feet had tightened.

The formation escalated for the final time.

Mana was forced directly into the core inside Rei.

Normally, with summoned beings—

The core would react or reveal its attribute system.

With Rei—

The magic core fluctuated.

Not aligned with any elemental system.

Not following familiar laws.

Then—

A surge of unconscious mana erupted.

Not an attack.

Not defense.

But optimization.

The space around Rei became… smoother.

As if the environment itself adjusted to fit him.

The formation trembled violently.

Crystals cracked.

«[Warning: System unable to predict adaptive behavior]

[Subject is optimizing the environment in reverse]»

The Council immediately stopped the test.

Space returned to normal.

Rei stood in the middle of the field.

Breathing evenly.

His shoulder still bleeding.

"Were you conscious of doing that?" an elder asked.

"No."

"You just adjusted the mana in the area."

"Not intentional."

"Then why did it happen?"

Rei thought.

"Survival risk exceeded threshold."

Elias slowly clenched his hand.

Passive magic.

When pushed to the boundary—

Rei did not only adapt.

He began making the environment adapt to him.

---

After the test, a quiet conclusion was recorded:

«The subject has no fixed limit.

Adaptation speed increases with pressure.

Absolute extremity should be avoided.»

One member spoke softly:

"If pushed into a true desperate situation… he may surpass every framework."

---

That night, Rei lay on the dormitory bed.

His body recovered during sleep.

The wound disappeared.

But his mind remained active.

For the first time—

A question repeated.

«If I have no limits…

who decides the stopping point?»

He had no answer.

Only data.

---

At the same time, in the dark room outside the academy.

The hoarse-voiced man looked at the test recording.

"As predicted."

"He is not merely a blind spot."

"He is an evolutionary variable."

"The next phase?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Push him into a real desperate situation."

---

The next morning.

Elias stood in front of Rei.

"How do you feel?"

"Stable."

"You know they are testing your limits."

"I know."

"You feel no dissatisfaction?"

Rei looked at him.

A small delay.

0.3 seconds.

"Dissatisfaction does not change results."

Elias exhaled slowly.

"Rei."

It was the first time he said the name without attaching a command.

"You are not a tool."

Rei looked at Elias's shadow.

The darkness fluctuated, but could not reach him.

"That definition has not been confirmed by the system."

His voice remained flat.

But very deep inside—

A new data point was recorded.

«"Not a tool"

Status: Unprocessed»

And within the academy's summoning system—

A silent warning was activated:

«The subject is developing beyond linear prediction.»

Arc 1 is not finished.

But the "Error"—

Has already begun changing the structure of the very framework meant to control it.
