"You could have been free," she told him once, in the prison's visiting room. "If you'd let me take the fall alone, claimed you were entirely my victim. I would have performed that design for you."
"I know. But I needed you to see that trust could be real. That I wouldn't abandon you, even when it cost me."
"Why?"
"Because someone did that for me. Because it's how the design changes. One choice at a time, one relationship at a time, one refusal to become what was expected."
Vesper smiled, the expression becoming more natural with each visit. "Your wife is pregnant again. I read it in the papers. A boy, this time?"
"We're not telling. But yes."

"I'll try. And I'll fail, sometimes. And Arora will remind me, and Elena will watch, and we'll adjust. That's the design now. Not perfection, but persistence. Not control, but connection."
