Chapter 3 - The Quiet Rooms

The door shut behind them with a deep, solid thud.

For a moment, Lux simply stood there.

The manor's entry hall stretched upward two full stories, its dark wooden beams disappearing into shadow. The stone floor still held a trace of cold from outside, but the air inside was warm from the massive fireplace burning somewhere deeper in the house.

Usually the place felt too big.

Too quiet.

Tonight it didn't feel quite as empty.

Lux turned around.

Kael had stopped just inside the doorway.

He was looking up.

Not in confusion—more like quiet observation.

The chandelier above them cast soft gold light across his face, catching in those amber eyes. The shadows of the room seemed to settle naturally around him, as if the house itself had decided he belonged there.

Lux cleared his throat.

"So… this is the entry hall."

Brilliant explanation.

Kael lowered his gaze.

"It is very large," he said calmly.

"Yeah, well," Lux muttered, shrugging off his coat, "old-money architecture loves unnecessary space."

He tossed the coat over the railing and gestured down the hallway.

"Come on. I'll show you around before you get lost."

Kael followed.

The moment he moved closer, Lux felt it again.

That warmth.

Only this time it was stronger than outside.

Not hot.

Just… soothing.

Lux rubbed the back of his neck as they walked.

Weird.

Maybe the heating system was blasting harder than usual.

That had to be it.

They entered the main living room.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the snow-covered forest, and the enormous stone fireplace at the center of the room crackled quietly.

Lux gestured around.

"Living room. Fireplace. Windows that make you feel like the woods are staring back at you at night."

Kael stepped farther into the room.

The firelight flickered across his skin.

Lux noticed something strange.

The warmth in the room seemed to deepen when Kael approached the fire—but it wasn't coming from the flames.

It was coming from him.

Lux shifted slightly.

The feeling settled deeper in his chest now.

Not just warmth.

Relaxation.

The kind you felt after sinking into a couch at the end of a long day.

Lux frowned faintly.

That was… unusual.

Normally being around new people made him tense.

Especially strangers delivered in mysterious crates.

Yet somehow the tension in his shoulders had already started to disappear.

Kael turned slowly, taking in the room.

"This place is very quiet," he said.

Lux snorted.

"That's one way to put it."

He leaned against the back of the couch.

"It's basically a luxury snow prison."

Kael glanced toward him again.

"Do you not like it here?"

Lux hesitated.

The honest answer slipped out before he could stop it.

"It's fine," he said.

Then he sighed.

"…It's just lonely."

The words hung in the air for a moment.

Lux grimaced.

"Wow. Oversharing already. Great start."

Kael didn't laugh.

He didn't look uncomfortable either.

He just watched Lux with that same calm, attentive expression.

Something about it made Lux oddly aware of the space between them again.

And the warmth deepened.

Lux pushed himself upright quickly.

"Anyway. Tour."

He motioned toward the hallway.

"Kitchen's this way."

Kael followed again, his footsteps nearly silent against the wood floors.

They passed through the dining room, then into a massive kitchen with dark stone counters and modern appliances that looked almost unused.

Lux opened the refrigerator.

"Food situation is… whatever you want, basically. Grocery drones come up from the town twice a week."

Kael stepped beside him.

Closer this time.

The warmth surged again.

Lux paused with the fridge door half open.

His brain felt slightly… fuzzy.

Not unpleasant.

Just relaxed.

He slowly shut the fridge.

"…Okay," he said quietly.

"That is officially weird."

Kael tilted his head.

"What is?"

Lux gestured vaguely between them again.

"This."

Kael watched him carefully.

Lux noticed something subtle shift in his expression.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Again.

"You feel something unusual?" Kael asked.

Lux shrugged.

"Not bad. Just… calm."

He rubbed the back of his neck again.

"Which is strange because normally meeting a stranger who lives in my house would make me extremely tense."

Kael was silent for a moment.

His gaze studied Lux with new focus.

Lux suddenly felt oddly aware of those amber eyes.

Like they were paying very close attention.

"You are not uncomfortable?" Kael asked.

Lux blinked.

"No?"

Then he laughed quietly.

"Should I be?"

Kael didn't answer right away.

Instead he took a small step back.

The change was immediate.

The warmth lessened.

Just slightly.

Lux noticed instantly.

His brow furrowed.

"…Wait."

Kael watched him.

Lux took a step closer again.

The warmth returned.

Stronger.

Lux froze.

"Oh."

For a few seconds neither of them spoke.

Lux slowly pointed at Kael.

"…You."

Kael didn't deny it.

His expression remained calm, but there was something more cautious in his eyes now.

"You noticed quickly," he said.

Lux blinked again.

"Noticed what exactly?"

Kael considered the question.

"My presence can have… subtle effects on people."

Lux crossed his arms.

"That sounds suspiciously vague."

"It is."

Lux stared at him.

But strangely, he didn't feel alarmed.

If anything, he still felt…

Relaxed.

Comfortable.

Which honestly made the whole situation even weirder.

"Well," Lux said finally, "whatever it is, it's not exactly unpleasant."

Kael went very still.

Something thoughtful flickered across his face.

He studied Lux more carefully now.

Almost like he was testing something.

Most humans reacted very differently.

Suspicion.

Nervousness.

Sometimes even agitation.

But Lux…

Lux simply looked curious.

And oddly calm.

Kael exhaled quietly.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Because if Lux Ardent was this comfortable already…

Then he was far more receptive to Kael's aura than most people.

Lux stretched slightly, unaware of the realization happening across from him.

"Alright," he said.

"Still got the upstairs to show you."

He gestured toward the staircase leading up from the main hall.

"Bedrooms, library, probably a ghost or two."

Kael followed his gaze toward the stairs.

Then he looked back at Lux.

The faintest hint of a smile returned.

"I look forward to seeing it."

Lux headed toward the staircase.

Kael followed a step behind.

And as they moved deeper into the quiet manor, the warmth between them slowly grew stronger.

Even if Lux hadn't fully realized why yet.
