Chapter 19 - The Almost-Kiss

Chapter 19

The city outside the penthouse glowed with red and blue neon, rain sliding down the massive windows like liquid fire.

Inside, the penthouse was silent, except for their breathing.

Yumi Sato leaned against the window ledge, heart pounding, body tense.

Across from her, Ryuji Takeda stood impossibly still, watching her like she was both fragile and dangerous at the same time.

The tension was thick. Electric. Almost unbearable.

"I can't believe you trust me after everything," Yumi muttered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ryuji's gaze didn't waver.

"You don't have to believe me," he said softly, "just trust that I'm here."

Her pulse quickened, the sound of her heartbeat almost deafening in the silence.

She tried to step back—but he moved forward.

"Yumi…"

The word was low, measured, but it made her knees weak.

He was too close. Too calm. Too dangerous.

She could feel the heat radiating off him.

His hand brushed lightly against hers, a ghost of contact—but it sent sparks shooting through her body.

She swallowed, trying to force herself to step away—but her feet wouldn't obey.

Ryuji's eyes flicked to her lips, then back to her eyes.

"Why do you do that?" he murmured.

"Do what?" she asked, voice trembling.

"Push me away… and yet stay."

Her chest tightened.

"I—I have to survive," she stammered.

"Survive," he repeated, almost mocking, almost teasing, his breath faint against her face.

The distance between them shrank.

Just inches now.

Yumi could feel his warmth. Smell the faint scent of his cologne, mixed with something darker, intoxicating… dangerous.

Her breath hitched.

Ryuji tilted his head slightly.

"You think I'll hurt you?"

Yumi's heart skipped.

"No," she whispered.

"Then why are you afraid?"

"I…" she faltered.

He leaned closer.

Closer.

The room seemed to shrink around them. The neon lights cast long shadows across their faces.

Their lips were almost touching.

Time slowed.

Her hand trembled where it rested against the window.

His hand hovered near her cheek, a breath away from brushing it.

And then—

The phone rang.

Yumi jumped, pulling back slightly.

Ryuji's eyes darkened, a dangerous glint flashing.

"Someone's here," he muttered.

The moment was broken.

But the electricity lingered.

The air between them was charged, screaming with everything unspoken.

Yumi's pulse raced.

Ryuji's jaw tightened.

Neither of them said a word as the tension hummed in the room.

One thing was certain: that kiss hadn't happened—but it didn't need to.

The danger, the obsession, the desire—they were all there, waiting to explode.
