Chapter 1 - BIO

Alex Mercer

Alias: Zeus (Umbrella Designation)

Occupation: Former Umbrella Corporation Virologist

Status: Missing / Classified

Last Known Location: Raccoon City

Overview

Dr. Alex Mercer was once a brilliant but quiet researcher working deep within Umbrella Corporation's viral development programs. While most scientists focused on improving the T-Virus, Mercer worked on something entirely different—an experimental pathogen he labeled Blacklight.

Blacklight wasn't like Umbrella's other viruses. It didn't simply infect a host and mutate them.

It rewrote them.

Over years of secret research Mercer came to a terrifying conclusion: if Blacklight ever escaped containment, it wouldn't just cause an outbreak—it could reshape life itself. Realizing Umbrella would weaponize it immediately, Mercer erased every trace of the project. Hard drives, lab servers, physical files—everything tied to the virus was destroyed.

But Umbrella found out.

Cornered in the Raccoon City subway tunnels by Umbrella operatives, Mercer made one final decision. Rather than let them take the virus—or his body—he injected the only vial of Blacklight into himself and stepped in front of an oncoming train.

Umbrella recorded the incident as a suicide.

Hours later, something woke up beneath the city.

And it wasn't entirely clear whether it was Alex Mercer… or something wearing his memories.

Umbrella Designation: ZEUS

When Umbrella began receiving scattered reports from surviving operatives, they assigned the unidentified entity a codename:

ZEUS

The name came from a field agent who claimed the creature tore through infected and bioweapons "like a god throwing lightning."

Unlike Umbrella's Bio-Organic Weapons, Zeus didn't behave like a monster. He moved with intelligence, purpose—and terrifying control over his own body.

Umbrella analysts eventually reached an unsettling conclusion:

Zeus wasn't a B.O.W.

Physiology

After injecting Blacklight, Mercer's entire body was converted into living viral biomass. Every cell in his body is essentially the virus itself, giving him total control over his biological structure.

To outside observers he appears human, but in reality Mercer is a shape-shifting viral organism capable of rebuilding his body however he chooses.

He can form blades, armor, tendrils, shields, or even mimic other people entirely. Clothing, weapons, even fingerprints can be recreated as part of his body.

Abilities

Biomass Manipulation: Mercer can reshape parts of his body into weapons such as massive blades, claws, whips, and armored plating. These transformations happen instantly in combat.

Consumption: By absorbing living organisms, Mercer can break them down into biomass. When he does, he gains their memories, knowledge, and even their appearance. This allows him to perfectly impersonate others.

Superhuman Strength: Mercer's strength vastly exceeds anything Umbrella has produced. Vehicles, concrete walls, and even large B.O.W.s offer little resistance.

Extreme Speed and Agility: He can run faster than most vehicles, leap several stories into the air, scale buildings effortlessly, and move through city environments with frightening speed.

Regeneration: Even severe damage can be repaired quickly. By absorbing additional biomass Mercer can restore himself from injuries that would destroy any normal organism.

Adaptive Evolution: The Blacklight Virus constantly evolves. Threats that harm Mercer once become less effective over time as the virus adapts.

Enhanced Senses: Mercer can detect infected organisms and track heat signatures, making it extremely difficult to hide from him.

Psychological State

Since awakening after the subway incident, Mercer appears to suffer from a deep identity conflict.

He remembers his life as Dr. Alex Mercer—his work, his past, the choices he made.

But sometimes those memories feel distant. Like they belong to someone else.

Because technically… they might.

There is a very real possibility that Alex Mercer died in that subway tunnel.

And the thing walking around now is simply the Blacklight Virus wearing his shape.

Mercer himself isn't sure which answer is worse.
