Chapter 12 - Arrival at the Academy

The wind over Ochisuita no longer felt familiar.

It moved through the empty streets, through the trees, through the broken silence of a life that had already changed.

But to Koi Ren, it felt distant.

Like it belonged to someone else now.

The Morning of Departure

Black carriages stood at the edge of the town.

Not many people were left to watch.

Only five students walked forward.

Koi Ren.

Aqua Sairin.

Bane Kurogane.

Raide Shinkai.

Daichi Iwamoto.

The survivors of the trial.

The chosen five.

Aeris Vallen stood before them, unmoving.

His silver hair shifted slightly in the wind.

"You were not chosen because you are strong."

His voice was calm.

"But because you did not break."

A pause.

"Strength is common."

"Endurance is rare."

Koi stared forward silently.

Aeris raised his hand.

"You are no longer citizens of Ochisuita."

"You are students of the Ochisuita Academy of Balance."

The carriage doors opened.

The Journey

Hours passed.

The world outside changed.

Fields became cliffs.

Cliffs became bridges of stone floating over deep valleys.

And the air itself felt heavier the closer they got.

Koi sat near the window.

His reflection stared back at him.

But something inside him didn't feel stable.

A pressure.

Thump.

He frowned slightly.

"…Again."

It faded.

But not fully.

The Academy

The academy appeared like a scar carved into the mountain.

Massive stone structures rose into the sky.

Floating platforms circled its upper levels.

Waterfalls flowed upward instead of down.

It was not a school.

It was a system.

Aeris stepped out first.

"This is the Ochisuita Academy."

Then he added quietly—

"And it does not protect the weak."

The gates opened slowly.

Inside — The Three Stages

The moment they entered, the atmosphere changed.

The academy was divided.

Not physically at first…

but visibly through presence.

Three levels of students stood in separate areas.

Stage 1 — Newcomers

The lowest section.

Fresh recruits.

Survivors of trials like Koi's group.

Unstable, inexperienced, still learning control.

Eyes filled with ambition… and fear.

Koi, Aqua, Bane, Raide, Daichi were placed among them.

Whispers followed immediately.

"Those are the new five?"

"They look ordinary…"

Daichi's jaw tightened.

Raide smiled slightly.

Aqua stayed focused.

Bane said nothing.

Koi ignored them.

Stage 2 — Experienced Students

Above them stood older students.

More refined.

More dangerous.

Some had scars.

Some had confidence that didn't come from arrogance… but from survival.

Among them stood:

Sseira Inode — calm, observant, healing aura barely visible around her.

Dotsu Kitso — relaxed posture, cards floating lazily around his fingers.

Others watched silently.

They didn't mock the newcomers.

They evaluated them.

Like tools.

Or threats.

Stage 3 — Elites

At the highest platform stood only a few.

Their presence alone distorted the air.

Strong.

Silent.

Unreachable.

Hikari Amane — standing still like a blade of light waiting to be drawn.

And another beside him—

Amane (known as the Light Executioner of the academy).

They didn't speak.

They didn't need to.

Even the instructors avoided standing too close.

Aeris Speaks

Aeris raised his hand.

Silence fell across all three stages.

"This academy does not train equals."

"It separates them."

His gaze moved across all students.

"Because the world you live in… is not equal."

A pause.

"And soon… you will understand why."

A low silence followed.

Koi felt it again.

Thump.

Stronger.

Inside his chest.

Like something reacting to those words.

The First Sign

Suddenly—

A distant alarm echoed through the academy.

Not loud.

But deep.

Wrong.

An instructor rushed in.

"Director Vallen—an outer sector report!"

Aeris didn't move.

"Speak."

The instructor hesitated.

"…Another settlement has gone silent."

No bodies.

No signs.

No energy residue.

Just emptiness.

The academy grew still.

Aeris closed his eyes slightly.

"…So they are continuing."

Koi's chest tightened.

Thump.

This time… it lingered.

Longer.

That night, Koi stood alone on the academy balcony.

Below him, the academy glowed like a giant sleeping beast.

Behind him, thousands of students trained.

Above him, elites watched without emotion.

And inside him—

something watched back.

Koi slowly placed a hand on his chest.

"…What are you?"

For a moment—

A faint symbol flickered.

Not outside.

Not visible.

Inside him.

Then it vanished.

But the feeling remained.

Waiting.

Patient.

Alive.
