Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – Trapped in Shadows

The mansion had gone quiet—but Ethan knew better.

Silence wasn't peace. Silence was a warning.

Aria and Sophia sat in the private study, hearts pounding. Aria's chest tightened as she glanced at Ethan, who stood by the doorway, his body tense, scanning every shadow.

Sophia leaned slightly forward, her hands brushing the edge of the desk. "He's… amazing, isn't he?"

Aria's green eyes narrowed. "You're obsessed."

Sophia tilted her head, a sly grin appearing. "Maybe. Can you blame me?"

Aria said nothing. She couldn't. Every fiber of her being had noticed how Ethan's presence made the room feel smaller, hotter, more dangerous, and yes—more thrilling.

Ethan's gaze flicked to both girls. "We're not safe. Move to the lower floor. Now."

Aria rose, her stomach twisting. "Lower floor?"

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Yes. Follow me, quietly."

The staircase was long and silent. Shadows stretched across the walls, every creak echoing through the empty halls.

From behind, Sophia whispered, "I can't believe we're actually moving with him. I—"

Ethan's eyes snapped back for a moment. Just a glance. No words. But it was enough to send a shiver down Sophia's spine.

Aria noticed it, too, and her chest clenched with irritation—and something she didn't want to admit: a flutter of longing.

Halfway down the stairs, a metallic clink echoed. Ethan stopped instantly.

"Stay behind me," he ordered.

A shadow moved at the edge of the hallway—another intruder. He moved with unnatural silence, knife in hand, eyes fixed on the girls.

Ethan didn't hesitate:

He caught the knife mid-swing.

Twisted the attacker's wrist, sending him sprawling across the floor.

Snatched another small blade from his belt and disarmed him.

Sophia's eyes were wide. "He's… incredible. I—I've never seen anyone like him."

Aria's chest tightened. Watching Sophia stare at him with such admiration made her stomach twist. Jealousy, desire, frustration—all tangled together.

Ethan didn't notice—or pretended not to. He scanned the hallways, every muscle coiled, calculating.

Then came the sound that froze them all:

A low, mechanical hum. From the ceiling above, a small drone descended. Red lights blinked ominously.

Ethan's eyes narrowed. "Stay close. Do not move."

The drone hovered, scanning. Its purpose was obvious: reconnaissance. Someone inside the mansion was planning something bigger.

Sophia's breath caught. "This is… insane. I—I want to be near him."

Aria's jaw tightened. "Sophia!"

But Sophia only moved slightly closer anyway, and Aria realized something dangerous: her heart clenched not just from fear, but from wanting Ethan too.

Ethan's attention snapped to the drone. With precise, deadly movements, he disabled it using a small device from his belt. Sparks flew.

"Good," he muttered. "But this is just the beginning. The real threat hasn't shown itself yet."

He motioned for them to move. The mansion seemed endless, and each hallway, each corner, now felt like a trap.

Aria glanced at Ethan again. His jaw was tight, his eyes dark. He moved not just with skill, but with purpose—protecting them at all costs.

Sophia whispered again, breathless: "I… I would follow him anywhere."

Aria's chest tightened with something she didn't want to name—possession, jealousy, desire—all tangled into one dangerous feeling.

Then, from the shadows ahead, came a sound that made Ethan freeze—a faint click.

He spun just in time.

A flash of metal, a shadow moving too fast, and suddenly… a bullet shattered the wall inches from Aria's head.

"Move!" Ethan yelled.

He lunged forward, sweeping both girls behind him, his body a shield of steel.

Aria felt heat radiate from him, felt how close Sophia pressed, and realized… she was trapped in more than just the mansion.

She was trapped in the pull of Ethan Kane.

And the night had only just begun.
