Chapter 4
*Aria*
"Hmmm," she hummed, tilting her head with curiousity. "You got poor instincts." She continued, her sharp claws piercing into the flesh of my neck, although I was numb to the pain. Wolf energy sparked around her. She was a thunder wolf type, I could tell that much.
"Are you done?" I asked, unimpressed.
Her lips curled, "Interesting. Calm under pressure, I like that." Her grin widened, her fingers tightening harder against my neck. "Unleash your wolf and fight me." She growled, her eyes lightening up with excitement.
I rolled my eyes. Seems I'd just ended up as a room mate with a competitive psycho. Too bad it was a bad matchup. I didn't even have a wolf to entice her.
Upon noticing my nonchalant reaction, her eyes darkened as she leaned closer into my ear. "You might think this is some sort of prank, but trust me, I could snap your neck right here and nothing would happen. So you better don't take me for granted and unleash your wolf before I electrocute you to death."
A blinked. But even with my carefree expression, a chill ran down my spine. She'd just made an obvious death threat which I new well she meant every word. God, how did I end up with this psycho in the same dorm. I'd just have to ask Ryden for a new room.
"You're insane," I muttered, my voice steady despite the pressure on my throat.
Her grin twitched, not offended but amused. "You're boring," she shot back, and suddenly the air around us crackled. Tiny arcs of electricity snapped between her fingers and my neck. The smell of ozone filled the room.
"Why aren't you reacting?" she asked quietly, studying me now instead of taunting. "Don't tell me..." She paused, gasping in realization, her hand covering her opened mouth in a dramatic shock."You don't have a wolf?"
Before I could answer, the dorm door clicked and both our heads turned. The door slowly open, and someone popped her head in.
"Umm, am I interrupting something?" The girl asked, giving an awkward smile.
My roommate didn't even bother letting go. She just glanced at the girl by the door, completely unfazed. "Yes," she said flatly. "Leave."
The girl blinked. "Oh, okay. Sorry." She started to pull back, then hesitated, eyes flicking between us. "Wait… is this, like, a dominance thing or should I call someone?"
"It's a misunderstanding," I cut in quickly.
My roommate's eyes snapped back to me, her brow raised. "Is it?"
I forced a tight smile at the girl. "We're good." I didn't want anymore drama than what was already going on.
The girl didn't look convinced. She pushed the door open a little wider and stepped in anyway, clutching a small box against her chest. "I'm your neighbor from 3B. I just came to return the orientation packet they shoved into the wrong room."
"Three seconds," my roommate warned.
"Relax Lisa," the girl said, raising a hand. "No one's fighting. I know you love spars but free the newbie would ya?" Her gaze landed on the faint line of blood where claws met skin.
So Lisa was her name huh.
Lisa clicked her tongue but finally loosened her grip. The pressure vanished. I inhaled desperately, sucking in the breath I was barely able to breath in seconds ago.
The girl exhaled in relief. "Sorry about that. She's pretty hot blooded"
"Yeah it was obvious." I muttered under my breath, rubbing off the blood trail on my neck.
The girl placed the box on the nearest desk, then leaned closer to me, lowering her voice. "You okay?"
"I'm fine."
"I barely touched her," Lisa added lazily, flopping onto the bed like she hadn't just threatened to murder me.
The girl looked between us again. "Sooo… should I pretend I didn't see anything?"
"Yes," Lisa and I said at the same time. There was an awkward silence, but then the girl leaned even closer. "You don't have a wolf, do you?" the girl asked suddenly, eyes narrowing at me with curiosity instead of judgment.
My heart skipped a bit. Had I made it too obvious already? I had planned to keep it a secret for as long as I could, knowing how much I'd get looked down on if anyone found out.
"Umm I..." I stammered, my gaze averting to Lisa. Had she overheard Lisa say it?
"You don't have to hide it, I won't judge. I'm a sensory type, my wolf has the ability to sense and converse with other wolf. I sensed nothing from you that's why I asked."
My throat tightened. Of course, a sensory type. Just my luck.
The girl straightened, offering me a small, apologetic smile. "I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I just thought—"
"That she's defective?" Lisa cut in, swinging her legs off the bed. The air around her buzzed faintly. "Because that's exactly what this sounds like."
"I didn't say that," the girl replied calmly, though her shoulders stiffened. "Not having a wolf signature doesn't automatically mean—"
Lisa laughed. "In a wolf academy? It absolutely does."
I clenched my fist. Defective... could that really be what I was?
"I have a wolf," I said quietly.
Both of them went still.
Lisa's grin faded into a knowing grin. "Liar."
The sensory girl studied me, her eyes narrowing slightly "I'm not sensing suppression either," she murmured. "If you're hiding it, you're doing it at a level I've never seen."
"I'm not lying." Yeah I absolutely was. No way in hell was I going to admit I was wolfless at twenty one and make myself an outcast on the very first day.
Lisa stood. The temperature in the room seemed to spike with her movement, static crawling across my skin. She walked toward me slowly, like a predator circling prey. "Then prove it."
I swallowed. I'd just arrived here for God's sake. Couldn't I have a single fucking moment of peace.
