Chapter 91 - The Mountain of a Thousand Voices

The mountain was alive.

Not metaphorically—literally. Every rock, every tree, every whisper of wind carried consciousness. Voices murmured constantly, sometimes in languages Glad recognized, sometimes in sounds no creature had made for millennia.

"Welcome, child."

The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. Glad turned, seeing nothing.

"Who are you?"

"We are the Eldest. The first. The beginning." A figure materialized—not solid, but shimmering, shifting between forms. "We have watched you, Gladys Samotiloy. From your turning to your triumph. We would know: why did you choose as you did?"

Glad considered the question carefully.

"Because hiding was killing me. Because connection saved me. Because love—real love, not possession—made me stronger than fear ever did."

The figure shimmered. "Others have said similar. Few have lived it."

"I'm not special. I just got lucky. A girl filmed me, and instead of hunting me, the world embraced me. I built on that."

"You built. That's the difference." The figure solidified slightly—taking the form of an ancient woman, wise and worn. "Many receive gifts. Few build with them."

"Was it a gift? Going viral?"

"Was it a curse?" The Eldest smiled. "Only you can answer that."

Glad thought about the chaos, the fear, the attacks, the losses. Anino. Marikit. The battles.

And the community. The love. The family.

"It was both. And I'm grateful for all of it."

The Eldest nodded slowly. "You pass our test, Gladys Samotiloy. Not because you're perfect—you're not. But because you're true."

"What test?"

"The test of heart. We've watched creature-kind for eons. Seen rise and fall. Seen fear and love. You chose love. Consistently. Imperfectly. Beautifully." The figure began to fade. "Go now. Your family waits. And know this: the Council of Ancients recognizes you. Honors you. And will support you, when needed."

"Wait—I have questions—"

But the mountain was silent again.

Just a mountain.

And Glad, alone but not lonely, walked back down.
