The battle had ended, but the tension in the castle had not faded.
The moon hung high above the towers, casting silver light across the quiet courtyard.
Elena stood on the balcony outside her chamber, staring at the stars. Her heart was still racing from the fight earlier.
Behind her, the door opened quietly.
She didn't need to turn to know who it was.
Kael.
His presence was unmistakable—powerful, steady, and somehow calming.
"You should be resting," he said softly.
Elena turned slowly.
"And you should be too," she replied.
For a moment they simply looked at each other. The air between them felt charged with everything that had happened—fear, relief, and something far deeper.
Kael walked toward her.
"You fought beside me tonight," he said quietly. "Few people in this world can say that."
Elena smiled faintly.
"I was terrified."
"You hid it well."
She laughed softly.
"I had you beside me."
Kael stopped just in front of her. Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his body.
His silver eyes studied her carefully.
"Elena," he said, his voice lower now, "do you regret coming here?"
The question surprised her.
"At the auction," he continued. "When I bought you… your life changed forever."
Elena looked down for a moment.
When she spoke again, her voice was gentle but certain.
"At first I was afraid of you."
Kael's expression didn't change, but she noticed the slight tightening of his jaw.
"But now," she continued, lifting her eyes to meet his, "I think… it was fate."
Silence filled the space between them.
Then Kael reached out and gently took her hand.
His thumb brushed over her knuckles slowly.
"You are too good for this world," he murmured.
Elena stepped closer.
"And you are kinder than you pretend to be."
Kael let out a quiet breath, almost like a laugh.
"You are the only person who thinks that."
She tilted her head slightly.
"Maybe I'm the only one who sees the real you."
Something in Kael's eyes shifted.
Before Elena could say anything else, he pulled her gently into his arms.
This time it wasn't sudden or fierce.
It was slow.
Careful.
His arms wrapped around her waist while her hands rested against his chest.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
They simply stood there, holding each other beneath the moonlight.
"You nearly scared me tonight," Kael admitted quietly.
Elena looked up at him.
"The attack?"
"Yes."
His voice was softer than she had ever heard it.
"When Seraphine appeared… the only thing I could think about was protecting you."
Elena felt warmth spread through her chest.
"I wasn't alone," she whispered.
Kael lifted a hand and gently brushed her hair behind her ear.
"You never will be."
Their faces were only inches apart now.
When Kael kissed her this time, it was slower than before.
Not rushed.
Not desperate.
Just deep and full of emotion.
Elena's fingers tightened lightly against his shirt as she leaned closer.
The world around them seemed to disappear again.
Only the quiet night and the steady rhythm of their hearts remained.
After a long moment, Kael rested his forehead against hers.
"Elena…"
"Yes?"
"You belong beside me."
She smiled softly.
"I know."
He lifted her into his arms suddenly, making her laugh in surprise.
"Kael—"
"You should rest," he said with a small smile. "You fought bravely tonight."
He carried her inside her chamber and gently set her down.
For a moment they simply looked at each other again.
Then Elena reached out and took his hand.
"You don't have to leave."
Kael hesitated.
His expression softened in a way she had never seen before.
He brushed a soft kiss against her forehead.
"Sleep," he said quietly.
Elena felt his hand linger in hers for a moment longer before the candlelight dimmed and the night grew still.
Outside, the shadows moved along the castle walls.
And somewhere far away…
Seraphine was already planning her revenge.
