Chapter 12 - He's dead, right? [Guild Arc FINALE]

[Waking Administrator Artificially.]

[Administrator was asleep for… Two weeks.]

[Adequate Rest Met.]

Marcus yawned softly, his eyes no longer feeling heavy… Slowly opening both, he would see a familiar sight. The ceiling of a hospital room…

Looking down at himself, he could see he was tucked in tightly into a hospital bed, wearing those familiar scrubs yet again…

He felt no pain, but he had to check. Pulling the opening to his gown slightly, he'd look at his chest. Wincing, he saw the scar that took the place of his nipple… "Come on, man. Marie liked to suck on that one… Fuck that bastard."

Sighing softly, Marcus could hear… Snorring? Looking to his right, he saw Marie, Geraldine, and Vanessa all sitting in chairs. Watching over him. Though they had all fell asleep in the process today.

He also saw someone he wasn't expecting to see… Gerald. Just sitting in the corner of the room, brooding. Hands clasped, feet tapping against the floor. Nervous.

"Aww… I wasn't expecting you to be worried about me, Sir. Afraid your newest asset would end up like his mother?" He joked, chuckling at the irony of the fact he could've ended up like her… His system did tell him it woke him up forcefully.

Gerald's body jolted as he heard the voice he wanted to hear, eyes darting up. Seeing that Marcus was awake, he'd grin from ear to ear, laughing lightly. "Oh… My! You're awake, Marcus!" He screamed, jumping out of the chair and directly into Marcus's arms for a big hug. His cheek against his own.

Marcus felt his cheeks heat up, a blush coming to his face. "What the fuck! Get off of me!" He yelled, trying his hardest to push the man off of him, but somehow not having any strength to do so.

"Marcus! I was so worried! I'm so happy you're fine!" Gerald yelled in a sing-song like tone, rubbing his cheek against Marcus's own, a huge smile plastered all over his face.

"Gerald! Get off! What's wrong with you?! Ya gay or somethin'?!" Marcus screamed right back. Gerald pulled away, looking at Marcus with those beautiful baby blues… Marcus blushed… He looked so much like Marie.

The man grinned, his nose pushed up against Marcus's. "What's wrong with that?"

"What's wrong is that's my boyfriend, you jerk!" Marie yelled, grabbing Gerald by the head and pulling him away from Marcus.

"Ouch! Let me go!!" he yelled, squirming about like a worm…

Marcus clutched his chest, his heart beating faster than usual, the heartbeat monitor beeping faster as well… "Ahem… Thanks for watching over me, you two. Seriously."

Marie and Gerald stopped their petty fight as they heard Marcus's words. Letting her brother drop to the ground next to her, both of their cheeks would flush a light red.

"Don't worry about it. I'm just glad you're back in commission." Marie went back to her serious self, pulling down her hat with a sigh. That's when Marcus noticed she was wearing her normal clothes… A Pink Sundress and matching sun hat.

Cute….

Gerald would clear his throat, getting serious again as well. "No problem! You're our best Hunter! Of course I'd stay around to make sure you were safe!"

Marcus laughed lightly, opening his system window as he looked back to Marie. "So… Where's my fathers sword?"

Marie pointed to the bedside table, both of his blades shaking the entire time, as if they were weeping… His duffel bag of blades on the floor did the same. "They've been doing that weird shit the whole time…"

Marcus shrugged, deciding to ignore it and look back toward Marie and Gerald… He had an idea. He was new to this Hunter shit, and he'd never heard of Hunters willingly letting others look over their status screens or suggest where to put their stats… but he trusted them.

[Administrator Actions are currently unlocked. Would you like to make MARIE and GERALD Caretakers?]

"And what would that do?" Marcus thought, rubbing his chin as he watched the system window show three dots… Thinking?

[Becoming a Caretaker allows the system to assimilate with their own to show correct information when need be, save you when in danger, and allows you to allocate Moderators.]

"Sounds complicated… Sure?" he shrugged, watching as the system disappeared yet again.

"You two. Can I ask you for a favor?" he asked, looking them both in the eyes.

Gerald nodded. "Of course! Anything at all, Marcus!"

"Of course." Marie nodded as well.

"Help me allocate my stats."

They both looked at each other in confusion… Was this situation not normal in Hunter society?

Gerald cleared his throat. "Sure! I can help you out, Marcus!" he replied, a big smile plastered on his face. But Marcus could hear it in his heart… he was nervous. A droplet of sweat dripped down his cheek.

"This isn't exactly normal, Marcus… but you can trust me. No… us. We'll guide you." Marie kept it grounded. This wasn't normal in any capacity. But he trusted them, and they trusted him.

Marcus nodded to both of them, sending his status screen over… Both of them looked surprised. But not for the reasons you'd think.

[All skills have been upgraded.]

[The administrator is suggested to train their Jump skill as to not cause damage to their surroundings.]

Marcus saw just how many notifications he had gotten while he was asleep… Cool. But maybe a bit too much for both Gerald and Marie.

Both of them looked on in complete awe at how many skills he had. "I knew you weren't normal, Marcus, but this is insane," Marie said, rubbing her face as she looked over everything he had gained.

"But based on just this… there's a lot to discuss." Gerald chimed in, rubbing his chin as well.

"Here's what we'll do first. I know you just got a healing ability, but until you train to use your Jumps more fine-tuned than you do now, getting a stronger body is important. You earn slightly more points per level than a normal Hunter, so… dump thirty points into your constitution. That'll push over the average that a DPS should have," Marie explained, Gerald nodding along with her explanation.

Marcus nodded as well, understanding the logic. To fight longer, he needed to be able to take more hits. Upping his constitution was the right play.

Putting the points into it, he felt his body harden and get softer with each passing second. Like his muscles were degrading and healing themselves back up to their rightful state… Groaning softly, he felt like he wanted to throw up… And he did.

Whatever sicknesses, impurities, or whatever else he had in his body began to be expelled. As he clasped his mouth shut, Marie handed him a garbage can almost immediately. Like this was normal.

Barfing up the shitty-smelling liquids, he groaned in… Relief? "What the fuck just happened?"

"You got healthy. All that smoker's lung, hidden sicknesses, everything just got expelled," Gerald answered, causing Marcus to look down at the garbage can filled to the brim with that disgusting black sludge… He smiled.

"Cool."

Gerald spoke next, "I see you have a negative in magic… In the past it wasn't an issue, but now? It would be a detriment to have it stay negative. Your senses are so high without them. Imagine if you could sense magic on par with me or Marie? And we're not even mages.

Marie shook her head. "No. Doesn't fit him. I don't know if Marcus should learn magic." Marie shook her head again, against the idea.

"Cmon, what?! Even the most physically demanding classes have magic! His class literally is weaker BECAUSE he has no magic! You know how other Breaker Swordsman move!" Gerald disagreed. Looking at his sister like she was crazy.

The two almost immediately began arguing, and the loud sounds began to irritate him… "Stop! Stop. I'll go down the middle. I'll put 20 in Magic. Jesus."

The two would sigh, nodding in defeat…

Marcus looked at the plus sign next to the stat and gulped… Would he really be alright doing this?

Sucking up his fear, Marcus pressed the button—

[Long press detected… Putting all 45 Stat points into Magic.]

"What the fuck—" Marcus would groan in pain, feeling a strange water like sensation flood into every oriface on his body!

He felt a burning sensation coursing through his body. New smells, new senses filling him up… What the fuck was this?!

[Hidden Effect… Meridians and Dantian purged of all impurities.]

[Cultivation Unlocked.]

He could feel two different energies flooding his veins… both Magic and… Aura?

He felt his skin heal itself of any impurities, sweat dripping down his forehead as the magic and his inner strength merged into one…

[Qi Generated.]

[Breaker Swordsman becomes… Spatial Cultivator.]

"What just happened…?" he asked, looking up at Marie and Gerald in confusion.

They both began clapping for Marcus, visibly happy for some reason.

"Congrats, Marcus! What just happened is one of those rare phenomena in the Hunter world… Cultivation!" Marie said, a huge smile on her face as she pat Marcus's shoulder.

Gerald grimaced… Jealous? "Your talent sickens me… I tried for years to get them merged, and I barely even got my Meridian's cleared for mana. Let alone having the two energies merge…" Gerald sighed, looking away.

"Well… Sorry bout that Gerald." Marcus watched as Marie pat her brother back, comforting him.

Looking back to his system, there were still a few notifications to get through…

[The Magic stat becomes Qi.]

[Level now doubles as Cultivation Level.]

[Cultivation Status… Third Rate Warrior.]

[Available Qi: 5345.]

[Constitution and Qi garner a new passive effect…]

[PASSIVE: Shield of Kinetic Energy.]

[The user stores kinetic energy by breathing in the Qi in the air and circulating it through the Meridians and Dantian, resulting in Kinetic Energy always being generated.]

[Generation Rate: 0.5 Kinetic Energy per Minute.]

[DMG Reduction: 10% Reduction from all sources.]

"Jesus Christ… But there has to be some caveats." He said, rubbing his chin and watching as a couple more notifications for the skill popped up…

[Taking DMG to the shield takes Qi. For every 1 Damage Reduced, 10 Qi is taken away.]

[Shield has vulnerability to Magic Type Damage. Magic damage is only reduced by 5%.]

"Of course…"

Marcus rubbed his face in annoyance as he looked at his finalized status… With his new Constitution score, he felt the healthiest he'd ever felt in literal decades. He had the urge to go lift some weights, run for hours on end… He was athletic, but this new feeling made him actually feel like he was back to his younger self. It felt great.

Rolling his shoulders, Marcus slipped out from underneath the sheets and pulled the IVs out of his arms, yawning softly. "Phew. Alright, I'm all good to go. We gonna wake them up or?" he asked, looking toward the rest of their group, all of them still sleeping in the chairs of the hospital room. Somehow.

Gerald nodded. "Yeah. We'll wake 'em up. Marie, take Marcus to go get his stuff," Gerald said, patting her shoulder as he turned to their sleeping friends with a sigh.

"Understood. Come on, Marcus, let's go get your clothes and gear," Marie said, walking past Marcus and heading out into the hallway…

Marcus looked down at the duffel bag filled with swords and sighed. Picking up the bag and slinging it over his shoulder, he sheathed both his father's blade and the scimitar and waited for the voices… But he heard nothing but low sniffles.

"Seriously…? You guys good or what?" he thought, but he got no response. Maybe he just needed to wait for them to be fine? He didn't know… Just recently, he didn't even know he was able to talk to swords, let alone know how they feel.

Shrugging, Marcus followed Marie out of the hospital room and out into the hallway. "So, how have you been? I was gone for two weeks. Let me know what happened."

Marie side-eyed her boyfriend, sighing softly as she began to explain what happened over the past two weeks. "We're being investigated, that's for one. Probably as soon as you're done getting dressed and such, the Hunter's Association will walk through those doors and start asking questions," she said, grimacing.

Marcus pondered why for a second, then it all came back to him… She wasn't wrong. The Jewel Mine wasn't just a simple dungeon; it was one of the few low-level dungeons that doubled as a training area and a place for Korea to make money. Tons of it. The jewels were used in almost everything. Mana stones, jewelry, phone batteries… So the entire dungeon being tainted with so much blood and death? Bad for publicity.

"Other than us being interrogated, we've been officially recognized as a raid squad. So that's nice... Uhh... What else..." She rubbed her chin before she continued. "Oh! Right, people are calling you 'The Blur' now. Because while you were in a coma, every few seconds you'd kinda... get blurry? It's hard to explain."

"The Blur..? That sounds.. Shitty. Also, what do you mean by people?! Who else saw me while I was asleep?" Marcus was confused beyond all belief. Who else was allowed inside of his hospital room?

"Well… A few scientists. A couple hunters from different guilds. Even the association president came by to see you. Actually, you were on the news for a bit.." Marie said, a nervous smile on her face.

"Marie…"

"OK. Fine. While you were in a coma, Gerald thought you were going to enter a vegetative state, Like Mrs. Koa. So the Government kinda gave you a bunch of medals and stuff on TV while you were out. 'Posthumously'." Marie said, rubbing the back of her head and chuckling lightly…

"What the fuck..?"

Marcus was angry at first… and then he was a little annoyed more than anything else. Staying under the radar was never his plan, but these medals and his new moniker definitely changed things. For the better.

"So… what medals did I earn?" he asked as Marie stopped walking, both of them now standing at the front desk.

"I'll make it quick… ahem. You earned the Order of Civil Merit, the Order of National Security Merit, and the Brave Citizen Award from Korea. Because you're a US citizen, the States also gave you a couple," she stated, causing Marcus to cover his face in excitement.

"Ooh! What were they?!" He nearly jumped out of his skin. Before, he was nervous. Now? This was potentially one of the best days of his life.

"If I remember correctly, they were the… Department of State Award for Heroism and the Commander's Award for Public Service. Some of the jewels in the mine were supposed to be delivered to the USFK. Lots of good PR all around."

Marcus nearly squealed… He'd never imagined he would be the one getting medals. He was a normal guy a month ago.

"Oop! Also forgot. You got the Outstanding Hunter Merit from the Association as well. You're officially seen as a rising star in the Hunter world. Congrats." She patted his shoulder before turning to the receptionist and asking for his belongings.

"Ahem. Excuse me?" Marie asked, tapping against the desk idly.

"Yes? How may I—" The receptionist looked up from her computer and her eyes immediately locked onto Marcus. She stopped herself from squealing, clearing her throat and fixing her hair, unbuttoning her blouse and grinning.

[RECEPTIONIST has been charmed.]

"Ahem. How may I help you, sir~?" Her face was flushed red, eyes wandering where they weren't meant to be… That's when Marcus noticed that the hospital gown he wore didn't really hide the newly tempered muscles he had gained. He felt like that constitution bump didn't just help his complexion…

Marie wasn't happy. Not at all. But after feeling Marcus place a hand on her shoulder, she moved back with a grimace. Allowing her boyfriend to solve the issue.

"Ahem… Nice to meet you. Do you mind getting my clothes? I'd like to be discharged…" He let that last word drag on for some reason, eyes staring into her own… For some reason he felt like teasing her a bit.

Good. You're back to full health. And using my techniques.

"Get out of my head with this bullshit." Marcus thought, the voice of his Father's Blade now back to normal.

No. This is what you get for worrying us.

"A-Ahh… Of course, sir! Of course! Right away!" She nearly melted in her seat, getting up just as quickly and walking away toward the back room. Hips moving side to side way more than they should. It actually looked quite awkward for her… But that face…

"Marcus." He heard Marie's voice and snapped out of his stupor, clearing his throat and looking toward her nervously.

But she didn't seem angry, hand grabbing at his collar and bringing him close. "I don't know what got into you… But where was this energy two weeks ago?" She grinned, staring into Marcus's eyes, her pupils becoming hearts yet again…

Marcus was about to speak, that is until Marshall walked into the lobby. "Boss man. You're awake. What are you two doing?!"

Marie would immediately let go, dusting off her dress. "Mind your own business, Marshall."

"W-What?! You were trying to get your freak on in the hospital lobby! You can't talk about me!" Marshall yelled as Marie immediately stomped over and grabbed him by the collar.

"You…!" she growled.

"Unhand me, fiend!" he growled back. The two of them began to bicker and fight like siblings… They bonded that much over the past two weeks?

Marcus sighed, feeling a little left out as his ears twitched, hearing the rhythmic clacking of the receptionist's heels.

"S-Sorry for the wait, handsome! You had a lot of gear back there…" She placed down his gear: the jacket, his pants, his belt, boots—the whole shebang.

Once the items were back in his sight, they immediately registered back into his inventory.

[Re-equipping gear. Durability values low. Would the user like to check out the System Shop?]

He nearly jumped out of his skin as he saw all the items disappear into thin air and somehow pop themselves onto his body. The receptionist looked a bit disappointed about something…

"System shop?" he thought, bowing lightly to the receptionist in thanks as he turned away from her.

[Yes.]

[Showing the Administrator their admin panel.]

[Earth System Admin: Marcus Koa]

[Help]

Marcus looked on in confusion, glancing every so often toward his party as he looked at the screen… Did he even have time to look through everything? No way. He would probably have to go back to work—

[Would the user like to activate Panel Time Dilation?]

"…What?"

[Activating Time Dilation. While inside the Admin Panel, one day of time barely equals a second in the real world.]

Marcus could feel his blood pumping… This was so cool. But it could also be something useful. He couldn't immediately solve issues with just this, but it definitely could save his life in battle a few times.

"Well… let's take a look, then." Marcus clicked onto the Shop icon since it did have a little exclamation point next to it.

What popped up was a daily rotation of three items, a search bar, and… nothing else. Well, there was a number counter in the top right.

[Adding 10,000 System Coins to the user, the Admin's paycheck.]

"Ten K?! Most Hunters barely have a thousand at one time… Cool." He decided to take a look at the items on display. He didn't exactly know what he could get… but just looking at what was there was a good start.

[Item Inspected.]

The first item seemed to be a sword. It was strange, though. Double-bladed, one on top and one on the bottom… long and heavy.

[Double-Bladed Scimitar (Rare)]

The double-bladed scimitar is the basic weapon of the Desert Warriors of the Land of Dust and Devil's Dungeon. This blade is heavy and does devastating damage, but must be wielded with an equal amount of finesse.

[STR REQUIRED: 45]

[Skills: Blade Spin, Cleave]

Marcus rubbed his chin… He was strong enough to wield it, but he didn't know if he could handle such a huge weapon with one hand. "I'll pass."

The price also wasn't very convincing.

[2,000 System Coins required to buy.]

Marcus swiped the arguably cool, but expensive blade away and looked at the next item on his list.

It was a strange circular vial of sorts… It had some Chinese or Japanese text on the side, and was about as big as a flask. Maybe a bit bigger.

[Water of the World Tree (Legendary)]

This flask holds the water of the World Tree, an extremely volatile liquid that many cultivators in the [REDACTED] want for their cultivation progress.

When drunk, this flask grants the drinker 150 years of Qi, as well as heals all damage taken.

[3,000 System Coins required to buy.]

Marcus looked it over and immediately pressed the buy button. There was no way he'd pass up an easy level-up item. Even if it wouldn't give him actual EXP, he remembered reading in a book somewhere that elixirs were how everyone cultivated in the stories.

Marcus raised an eyebrow as the item was teleported into his hands. It was exactly like how it was in the system. The flask had a strap on it, allowing him to sling it around his belt and let it hang by his left thigh.

[You've succeeded in equipping the Flask of Water from the World Tree.]

Marcus swiped away the window and looked at the last item… It seemed to be some sort of book. A book with a language he couldn't understand on it. The paper seemed rough in the image, and it was possibly the worst paperback book he'd ever seen. Not even a readable title on it.

[Shadow Clone Manual (Rare)]

This book details the full martial art, Shadow Clone. It allows the user to summon clones that are on the same level as the original, as long as they aren't killed.

Reading this manual grants the user the skill, Shadow Clone.

[Skills: Shadow Clone Summon, Shadow Clone Dispel, Shadow Cultivation]

[3,000 System Coins required to buy.]

Marcus looked it over with an evil smirk. This was great. How could he not buy this?! This would definitely allow him to become a better Hunter. "I'll buy it."

He pressed the button to buy the item and watched as it teleported into his hands.

Once he had it, he slipped it into his inventory and sighed… Now that he was done with the shop, there were still a few more options for him to take a look at. Especially since he was in time dilation currently.

Rubbing his chin as he looked over the menu, all he wanted to do was look through the current admin commands he had.

Pressing the option on his system window, a loading screen appeared with dots..

"C'mon…" Tapping his foot as he waited, Marcus watched the screen become a small list of available things he could actually do… And an even longer list of what he couldn't do.

[Admin Commands]

Unlock Door

Lock Door

Edit Status (Costs 1 Million System Coins per change.)

Blacksmith

Summon Random Item

Call Another Administrator

Marcus looked at the window with slight confusion… Admin? He could barely be called that. Two of the options were locking and unlocking a damn door. Another was locked behind an impossible paywall. He didn't really understand what Blacksmith meant in this case, and the summon random item command just seemed… Risky.

But the last command was one he felt the need to avoid at all costs. "Calling another admin? Why?" He shook his head. No way.

Deciding that he needed to try at least one command now while he could, he pressed the Blacksmith option. The same loading screen appeared, and after a few seconds, Marcus could hear a voice that wasn't his own, nor the System's.

"Yeah? Who the fuck is calling me at this crazy time? I was about to get some rest." The voice was low and gravelly. It sounded similar to what Marcus would imagine a guy who worked with heat for hours on end did. Was this the Blacksmith?

"Uhh. Hey? Sorry, I was just testing out an option on my status screen…" He looked at the screen, the voice being transcribed in text as well. His system text was a bright orange, however, resembling lava…

"By the gods… Excuse me, mortal. I didn't realize you were an administrator. Since you're calling, it must mean you used the command… Would you mind placing your hand on the window?"

Marcus shrugged, placing his hand on the system window… He saw a red light scan his hand and then the voice returned.

"Thank you, Administrator. Your personal item shall be finished in five months. Check back then."

And with that, the Blacksmith screen disappeared, the option being greyed out and a timer appearing by the words… Five months before he could use the command again? It was annoying, but he didn't even know what the command truly did other than let him speak to whoever he just talked to. "Guess I can wait."

With nothing else to do, and done doing what he needed to, the system window closed and the time dilation finally ended. The world was now back to its normal speed…

Marcus gasped, feeling a strong hand grab at his shoulder. Turning to its source, he was face to face with Marie. "Marcus. You ready to go?" she asked, smiling softly.

Marcus sighed, rolling his shoulders and turning around fully to face her. The rest of his squad was now standing behind her, Vanessa waving and Geraldine nodding her head to him. Letting him know they were there. For him.

Marshall nodded as well, grinning ear to ear. This was a bit strange.

"Ready for what? We're leaving a hospital," Marcus said, his squad all chuckling lightly, rubbing the backs of their heads and looking a bit nervous…

"You'll see," Marie said, letting go of his shoulder and walking away toward the doors.

Marcus sighed, following after her as the rest of the group did the same.

"You alright, Mr. Koa? I was so worried while you were in that coma!" Vanessa asked, running up behind him and hugging his side. He gave her a light hug back as they walked.

"I'm all good. Thanks for worrying, Vanessa—" He didn't get to talk much more as they opened the door and a nice breeze hit his nostrils. Then he heard… chanting?

"HERO! HERO! HERO! HERO!"

"Thank you, everyone, for waiting! The man who took down the corrupt subsection of the Tenpo-Ippo Guild has miraculously woken up from his coma! Say hello to… Marcus Koa!!"

The voice of a government official talking through a mic filled his ears. Stepping out of the hospital, he and his group now stood on a stage before thousands of Korean citizens…

"Hero?" Marcus said, looking about in confusion, before looking up and seeing his face on a nearby electronic billboard. What did he do?

Give them a smile.

THE STORY CONTINUES IN THE NEXT ARC: Hero.
