Chapter 4 - Chapter four

Ethan stared at the man in the black coat, frozen in the middle of his living room. The man's presence was almost suffocating, like a shadow had slipped through the walls. His eyes were dark and unreadable, but Ethan could feel them digging into his thoughts, measuring him, testing him.

"How do you know my name?" Ethan asked, his voice trembling despite his effort to sound calm.

The man smiled faintly, the kind of smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Because I've been watching you, Ethan. Long before the whispers began."

Ethan's stomach twisted. "Watching me… for what?"

"For the same reason you hear the whispers," the man replied calmly. "The future chose you."

Ethan laughed, but it came out hollow. "The future… chose me? That's impossible. Nothing about me is special."

The man tilted his head, as if amused. "Not special? You survived what others could not. You noticed what others ignored. You can hear what others cannot. That makes you… rare."

Ethan's pulse quickened. "And that matters because…?"

"Because in three days, someone close to you will die," the man said quietly. His words struck Ethan like ice water. "Someone you care about… and someone you may not be able to save."

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs. "Who?" His voice was barely a whisper.

The man shook his head. "Not yet. Knowing too soon will make you reckless. The future is fragile, Ethan. You cannot fight it blindly."

Ethan's fists clenched. "I can't just sit here! I have to do something!"

"You will," the man said softly. "But first, you must understand. The whispers are your guide. They are warnings, but they are incomplete. What you see is only one possibility. The threads of fate twist and turn, and you must learn to read them before taking action."

Ethan's mind spun. Threads of fate? Warnings? What does that even mean?

The man stepped closer. His coat brushed the floor, silent as a shadow. "Most people fear the future because they cannot control it. You… you have the chance to change it. But with that chance comes danger. One wrong step and everything you try to save could be lost forever."

Ethan's voice trembled. "And if I fail?"

The man's gaze darkened. "Then someone dies. Maybe someone you love. Maybe someone you will never forgive yourself for losing."

Ethan swallowed hard. "Then why me? Why now?"

"Because you are ready," the man said simply. "The world needs those who can see what comes, and act without hesitation. The whispers were only the beginning. In three days, the real test begins."

Ethan's hands shook, but he nodded slowly. "What do I do now?"

"Watch. Listen. Learn. Tomorrow, your lessons begin," the man said. "And remember… the future is not fixed. But it is fragile. One wrong choice, and everything collapses."

Before Ethan could ask more, the man turned and disappeared into the shadows outside the window. Ethan stood there for what felt like hours, staring at the spot where the man had been. A cold chill ran down his spine. The whispers had been warnings. Now, it felt like they were a calling.

And for the first time, Ethan realized that surviving the future wasn't just about listening to whispers—it was about facing the darkness that watched him, and outsmarting it.
