Chapter 1 - Shadows of Power Chapter 1: The Night Everything Changed

The rain never felt so cold in California.

It fell in long silver lines under the yellow streetlights, soaking the cracked sidewalks and the small cardboard sign that read:

Anything helps. God bless.

Ethan Cole stared at the empty coffee cup in front of him. Two coins. That was all he had made in the last three hours.

Two coins.

"Guess people in this city don't believe in charity anymore," he muttered.

A passing businessman glanced at him, then quickly looked away.

Ethan sighed and pulled his worn hoodie tighter around his body. The cold crawled into his bones like it owned him.

At twenty-three, he had imagined something different for his life.

Not sleeping behind grocery stores.

Not begging outside subway stations.

Not watching people walk past like he was invisible.

But life had a strange way of crushing dreams.

Three months ago, Ethan had a job. A tiny apartment. Even a girlfriend who once told him he had "potential."

Then the company collapsed.

The landlord kicked him out.

And the girlfriend?

She disappeared faster than the paycheck.

Now all he had was a backpack with two shirts, a cracked phone that barely worked, and a stomach that hadn't seen real food since yesterday.

A loud rumble echoed through the street.

Thunder.

Ethan looked up at the dark sky.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "Go ahead. Pour it down."

The rain answered.

Harder.

A police car slowly rolled past the street corner.

Ethan stood quickly, grabbing his backpack.

"Alright, alright, I'm leaving," he said under his breath.

Cops didn't like homeless people hanging around too long.

He walked down the empty street, shoes squishing with every step.

California nights could be beautiful.

But tonight the city felt… strange.

Too quiet.

Too still.

The wind suddenly stopped.

Even the rain seemed to pause.

Ethan frowned

That's weird

Then he heard it

A voice

Soft

Whispering

"Help… me

Ethan froze.

He turned around slowly.

"Hello?

Nothing.

The street was empty.

A flickering street lamp buzzed above him.

He rubbed his face.

"Great. Now I'm hearing things.

But the voice came again.

Clearer this time.

"Help… me

Ethan followed the sound down a narrow alley between two old buildings.

Trash bins lined the walls.

The smell of rotting food filled the air.

"Anyone here?" Ethan called.

No answer.

Then something glowed.

At the end of the alley.

A faint blue light.

Ethan walked closer, curiosity slowly overpowering his caution.

The light came from a small metal box lying beside a dumpster.

The surface of the box pulsed softly, like it had a heartbeat.

"What the…"

He crouched down.

The box was strange. Smooth metal. No buttons. No lock.

Just glowing symbols moving across its surface.

They looked… ancient.

"Some kind of tech?" Ethan whispered.

He reached out.

The moment his fingers touched the box—

BOOM.

A shockwave of blue light exploded from it.

Ethan screamed as electricity shot through his entire body.

Pain.

Blinding pain.

His vision turned white.

Then black.

When Ethan opened his eyes again, the rain was gone.

The alley was silent.

His head pounded.

"Ugh…"

He slowly sat up.

"What just happened?"

The metal box was gone.

Completely gone.

Ethan blinked.

"Did I imagine—"

A sudden burning sensation spread through his chest.

He gasped and grabbed his shirt.

"What the hell?!"

Under his skin, faint blue lines glowed like lightning trapped inside his veins.

Ethan stumbled back against the wall.

"No… no, no, no…"

The glow faded after a few seconds.

His breathing slowed.

The alley returned to normal.

Ethan stared at his hands.

"What… was that?"

Then something strange happened.

A thought appeared in his mind.

Not his own.

A voice.

Calm.

Mechanical.

SYSTEM ACTIVATED.

Ethan froze.

"…What?"

The voice continued.

HOST IDENTIFIED: ETHAN COLE.

POWER CORE INITIALIZED.

Ethan looked around wildly.

"Who said that?!"

No one was there.

The voice spoke again.

Inside his head.

ABILITY UNLOCKED: SHADOW PERCEPTION.

Ethan swallowed.

"This… isn't funny."

He stood slowly.

"Okay… maybe I hit my head. Maybe I'm dreaming."

He turned to leave the alley.

But then he saw something that made his heart stop.

Shadows.

Moving.

Not normal shadows.

The shadow under the trash bin twisted like it was alive.

The shadow on the wall stretched unnaturally long.

And the shadow behind Ethan…

…wasn't copying his movements.

It moved on its own.

Ethan's breath caught in his throat.

"Okay," he whispered. "That's definitely not normal."

The shadow slowly rose off the ground.

Like dark smoke.

It formed a shape behind him.

Tall.

Human-like.

Watching him.

Ethan spun around.

"What do you want?!"

The shadow figure tilted its head.

Then suddenly—

It lunged.

Ethan threw his hands up instinctively.

"Stay back!"

A burst of blue energy exploded from his body.

The shadow creature slammed into the wall and dissolved instantly.

Gone.

Ethan stood frozen.

His heart racing like a drum.

"What… did I just do?"

The voice returned.

FIRST ENEMY ELIMINATED.

ENERGY ABSORBED.

Ethan stared into the darkness.

"Enemy

His voice trembled.

"You mean there are more of those things?"

The silence answered him.

Then footsteps echoed at the entrance of the alley.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone was coming.

A tall man stepped into the dim light.

He wore a long black coat despite the warm California night.

His eyes glowed faintly red.

The man looked at the empty space where the shadow creature had vanished.

Then he looked directly at Ethan.

A cold smile spread across his face.

"Well," the stranger said calmly.

"This is interesting."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"Who are you?"

The man took another step forward.

"You destroyed one of our scouts."

"Our?"

Ethan's mind raced.

The stranger's eyes burned brighter.

"You shouldn't have touched that artifact, boy."

Ethan took a step back.

"I don't even know what you're talking about."

The man laughed softly.

"Oh, you will."

He raised his hand.

Dark energy gathered around his fingers.

"Because now… you belong to us."

Ethan felt the blue energy inside his body react.

Wild

Unstable.

The voice in his head spoke again.

WARNING.

HIGH-LEVEL ENTITY DETECTED.

The man's smile widened.

"You feel it, don't you?" he said.

"That power."

Ethan's fists clenched.

"What do you want from me?"

The stranger's eyes gleamed like burning coals.

"Simple."

He pointed directly at Ethan's chest.

"The power inside you."

The dark energy in his hand exploded outward.

Rushing toward Ethan like a living storm.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"Oh no

The alley erupted with blinding light.

And in that moment…

Ethan realized something terrifying.

The power inside him…

Was just beginning to wake up

Chapter 2: The Awakening

The alley exploded with light.

Blue and black energy collided like two storms crashing together. The force shattered nearby trash bins and sent loose papers flying through the air.

Ethan barely had time to think.

Instinct took over.

"MOVE!" the voice inside his head shouted.

Ethan threw himself sideways just as the dark energy smashed into the wall behind him.

BOOM.

Concrete cracked.

Dust filled the air.

Ethan hit the ground hard and rolled behind a metal dumpster, his heart pounding violently.

"What the hell is happening?!" he gasped.

The stranger in the black coat slowly walked forward, completely calm.

"You're faster than I expected," the man said, his voice smooth and confident.

Ethan peeked around the dumpster.

"Who are you?!"

The man ignored the question.

Instead, his glowing red eyes studied Ethan like a scientist examining an experiment.

"Interesting… very interesting."

Ethan clenched his fists.

"Stop saying that and answer me!"

The stranger chuckled.

"You really don't understand what you've become, do you?"

Another wave of dark energy formed around his hand.

"Which makes this even easier."

Ethan felt the strange blue power inside his body begin to pulse again.

Like a second heartbeat.

The voice returned.

ABILITY AVAILABLE: SHADOW PERCEPTION.

Ethan swallowed.

"Okay… okay… think."

Suddenly his vision changed.

The world around him slowed.

Colors faded slightly.

But the shadows…

The shadows became crystal clear.

He could see them moving.

Breathing.

Whispering.

Every shadow in the alley seemed alive.

Ethan gasped.

"I can… see them."

The man in the coat paused.

"Oh?"

Ethan looked down.

His own shadow stretched along the ground.

But now it looked… different.

Stronger.

Almost protective.

The voice spoke again.

COMMAND AVAILABLE: SHADOW CONTROL (LIMITED).

Ethan blinked.

"Control?"

The stranger suddenly attacked again.

A wave of dark energy shot toward Ethan like a spear.

"Too slow, kid."

Ethan reacted without thinking.

"STOP HIM!"

His shadow rose from the ground instantly.

Like liquid darkness.

It slammed into the incoming attack.

CRASH.

Energy exploded across the alley.

Both forces shattered into sparks of blue and black light.

The stranger stepped back slightly.

For the first time…

He looked surprised.

"Well now."

His red eyes narrowed.

"You're adapting quickly."

Ethan stood slowly, breathing heavily.

"I told you… I don't know what's going on!"

The stranger laughed.

"That much is obvious."

He walked closer.

"But the artifact chose you."

Ethan's mind raced.

"The glowing box?"

The man nodded.

"A relic older than humanity itself."

His voice turned darker.

"And you just absorbed it like it was nothing."

Ethan shook his head.

"I didn't mean to!"

"That doesn't matter anymore."

The stranger raised his hand again.

"But unfortunately for you… my organization has been searching for that artifact for decades."

Ethan felt a chill run down his spine.

"Organization?"

The man smiled coldly.

"You may call us…"

He paused.

"The Keepers of the Veil."

Lightning flashed in the distance.

Thunder followed.

The stranger's voice became quieter.

"Normally we would study someone like you."

His eyes burned brighter.

"But right now… I think it's safer if you simply disappear."

Dark energy began gathering around him again.

Stronger this time.

Much stronger.

Ethan felt the blue power inside him react violently.

The voice inside his head sounded urgent.

WARNING. ENERGY LEVEL CRITICAL.

Ethan clenched his teeth.

"Great. Just great."

The stranger released the attack.

A massive wave of darkness rushed forward like a tidal wave.

"Goodbye, Ethan Cole."

Ethan's mind raced.

"No way I'm dying in a dirty alley!"

His shadow suddenly moved again.

Not by command.

By instinct.

It spread across the ground like wings.

The blue energy inside Ethan exploded outward.

For a split second…

The entire alley turned bright blue.

The dark attack collided with Ethan's power.

Then something unexpected happened.

The energy bent.

Twisted.

And shot straight upward into the sky.

BOOOOM.

A massive explosion lit up the clouds.

The stranger staggered back.

"What?!"

Ethan collapsed to one knee, breathing heavily.

The voice spoke again.

NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED: ENERGY REFLECTION.

Ethan blinked.

"You couldn't tell me that earlier?!"

The stranger stared at him in disbelief.

"That… shouldn't be possible."

Ethan stood slowly.

"Guess you picked the wrong homeless guy to mess with."

The stranger's expression darkened.

"You're still nothing more than a beginner."

His voice became colder.

"But tonight has been… educational."

He stepped backward into the shadows.

"We will meet again."

Ethan frowned.

"Wait—"

But the man's body dissolved into darkness.

Gone.

Completely gone.

The alley became silent again.

Ethan looked around nervously.

"Hello?"

No answer.

The rain slowly started falling again.

Ethan sat down against the wall, exhausted.

His entire body hurt.

The glowing blue lines beneath his skin slowly faded.

"This is insane."

He looked up at the cloudy sky.

"Three hours ago I was begging for coins."

He laughed weakly.

"Now I'm fighting shadow monsters and secret organizations."

The voice spoke one more time.

SYSTEM UPDATE COMPLETE.

Ethan sighed.

"Of course there's a system."

Then the voice added something that made his blood run cold.

NEW ALERT DETECTED.

Ethan frowned.

"What now?"

The system responded.

MULTIPLE HOSTILE ENTITIES APPROACHING.

Ethan slowly turned toward the entrance of the alley.

Footsteps echoed in the distance.

Not one.

Not two.

Many.

Shadows began forming along the walls again.

Dozens of them.

And at the end of the street…

Three figures in black coats stepped into the light.

Each of their eyes glowing red.

Ethan whispered under his breath.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

The voice inside his mind spoke calmly.

SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 7%.

Ethan stared at the approaching enemies.

Then he sighed.

"Well…"

He cracked his knuckles.

"Let's make it interesting."

The three strangers began walking toward him.

And behind them…

The shadows rose again.

Alive.

Hungry.

Waiting

Chapter 3: Surrounded

The rain returned with a vengeance.

Cold droplets hammered the pavement as Ethan stared at the three figures standing at the entrance of the alley.

Each one wore the same long black coat.

Each one had the same glowing red eyes.

And each one radiated the same terrifying presence.

Behind them, the shadows on the walls twisted and stretched like living creatures.

Ethan slowly backed up.

"…Three of them."

The voice inside his head responded instantly.

THREAT LEVEL: HIGH

Ethan scoffed nervously.

"Yeah, I figured that out already."

The man standing in the center stepped forward.

He looked slightly older than the others, with sharp cheekbones and slick black hair.

His gaze locked onto Ethan like a predator watching prey.

"So," the man said calmly.

"You're the one who activated the artifact."

Ethan's fists tightened.

"I keep hearing about that thing. Maybe someone should explain what it actually is."

The man ignored the question.

Instead, he turned slightly toward the two figures beside him.

"Interesting energy signature."

One of the others nodded.

"Confirmed. The power core has fully bonded with the host."

Ethan blinked.

"Host?"

The first man smiled faintly.

"Congratulations, Mr. Cole."

His tone dripped with mock politeness.

"You are now carrying something many powerful people would kill to possess."

Ethan frowned.

"Funny. It already feels like that's happening."

The second man stepped forward now.

His voice was colder.

"You cannot control that power."

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

"Maybe not yet."

The third man laughed quietly.

"But you will never get the chance."

The three of them suddenly raised their hands.

Dark energy began swirling around their bodies.

The air in the alley grew heavy.

Oppressive.

Like the atmosphere before a massive storm.

Ethan felt the blue energy inside his chest react again.

Pulsing faster.

Stronger.

The voice returned.

MULTIPLE HOSTILE ENTITIES LOCKED.

DEFENSIVE RESPONSE RECOMMENDED.

Ethan looked around desperately.

"I'm still learning how this works!"

The first man tilted his head.

"You won't have time to learn."

He snapped his fingers.

The shadows behind him exploded forward.

Dozens of dark creatures rushed into the alley like wolves hunting prey.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"Oh come on!"

The first creature lunged.

Ethan reacted instinctively.

"Shadow—stop it!"

His shadow shot forward from the ground like a spear.

SLASH.

The creature dissolved instantly.

But another replaced it.

Then another.

And another.

Soon five shadow creatures surrounded him.

Ethan jumped back, barely avoiding their claws.

"This is not fair!"

The voice inside his mind spoke again.

NEW FUNCTION AVAILABLE: SHADOW STEP.

Ethan blinked.

"What's that?"

One creature leaped at his face.

Ethan reacted on instinct.

"SHADOW STEP!"

In an instant—

He vanished.

The creature crashed into the wall where he had been standing.

Ethan suddenly reappeared several feet away.

He looked around in shock.

"…I teleported?"

The system responded calmly.

SHORT-RANGE SHADOW TRAVEL.

Ethan grinned.

"Okay, that's actually cool."

The three men watched him carefully now.

The first man's expression hardened.

"He's learning too fast."

The second man nodded.

"We should end this immediately."

The third man raised both hands.

Dark energy gathered again, stronger than before.

The shadows in the alley trembled.

Ethan swallowed.

"That doesn't look good."

The voice inside his head responded:

ENERGY SPIKE DETECTED.

The three strangers spoke together.

"Shadow execution."

Suddenly the ground beneath Ethan cracked open.

Massive shadow tendrils burst from the pavement.

They wrapped around his legs.

His arms.

His chest.

Ethan struggled.

"HEY!"

The tendrils tightened.

Pain shot through his body.

The first man walked slowly toward him.

"You see, Ethan…"

His voice was calm again.

"You were never meant to survive this night."

Ethan gritted his teeth.

"Yeah?"

The man stopped a few feet away.

"Give us the power."

Ethan laughed weakly.

"I would… if I knew how."

The man's eyes flashed red.

"That can be arranged."

He raised his hand toward Ethan's chest.

Dark energy gathered around his palm.

"Once we remove the power core…"

He smiled coldly.

"…you will die instantly."

Ethan's heart raced.

The shadow tendrils squeezed tighter.

He could barely breathe.

The voice inside his head suddenly spoke again.

But this time…

It sounded different.

Deeper.

Stronger.

EMERGENCY OVERRIDE ACTIVATED.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"What does that mean?"

The system answered:

HIDDEN ABILITY UNLOCKED.

The glowing blue lines under Ethan's skin suddenly blazed brighter than ever before.

The shadows holding him began to tremble.

The three strangers stepped back in surprise.

"What is that?" the second man whispered.

Ethan felt something awaken inside him.

Something ancient.

Something powerful.

The voice spoke again.

ABILITY: SHADOW DOMINION.

Ethan gasped.

"What…?"

Suddenly every shadow in the alley moved.

Not attacking him.

Obeying him.

The tendrils wrapped around his body shattered instantly.

The shadow creatures froze in place.

The three men stared in shock.

"That's impossible," the first man said.

Ethan slowly stood up.

Blue energy swirled around his body.

His shadow stretched across the entire alley.

Larger.

Darker.

Stronger.

Ethan looked directly at the three men.

For the first time that night…

He wasn't afraid.

"You said I couldn't control this power."

His voice echoed slightly.

Different.

The shadows behind him rose like a massive storm.

Ethan clenched his fist.

"Looks like you were wrong."

The three strangers suddenly looked nervous.

The first man stepped back.

"…Retreat."

The others hesitated.

"Now!"

But before they could move—

A deep voice echoed from the rooftops above.

"Too late for that."

Everyone looked up.

A tall figure stood on top of the building.

Wearing a dark hood.

Watching the entire scene.

The stranger's eyes glowed bright silver.

Ethan frowned.

"…Who is that?"

The three men from the Keepers of the Veil looked terrified.

One of them whispered:

"No…"

The hooded figure stepped forward.

"And here I thought the Keepers were smarter than this."

He jumped down from the roof.

Landing softly in the alley.

Rain splashed around his boots.

He looked directly at Ethan.

And smiled.

"Well," the stranger said calmly.

"Looks like we finally found you."

Ethan's heart skipped a beat.

"…Found me?"

The man nodded.

"Yes."
