Chapter 2 - What the Soul-Scripts Say 魂の文字が語るもの

The scholar's name was Orren Dast, and he had been reading soul-scripts for thirty-one years, and in all that time he had never been afraid of one.

He was afraid of this one.

The child was seven years old. He sat on the examination stool with the particular stillness of a boy who had been told to sit still and had decided to do it perfectly — back straight, hands folded, eyes fixed on the middle distance with an expression that Orren could only describe, privately, as patient. Not bored. Not anxious. Patient, in the manner of someone who has waited before and knows it ends eventually. It was a strange quality in a seven-year-old. It was a stranger quality in the context of what Orren was seeing.

The soul-script reading apparatus — a shallow copper bowl filled with starwater, positioned beneath the child's outstretched palm — had stopped working correctly approximately four minutes ago. It had not broken. It had simply run out of capacity. The light it projected, which should have formed the delicate thread-script of a child's nascent soul above the bowl's surface, had instead spread to fill the entire bowl, then overflowed, then risen to approximately the height of Orren's chest before stabilising into a slow, breathing column of pale gold illumination that gently lit the entire examination room.

The child watched it with mild interest.

"Is it supposed to do that?" he asked.

"No," Orren said honestly. Then, remembering himself: "Hold still, please."

Soul-scripts were, in the language of Alderon's scholars, the divine signature of a living consciousness — the accumulated imprint of a soul's essential nature, rendered visible through starwater contact. Most scripts were modest things: a few luminous threads, easily read, easily filed. A bright soul might fill the bowl. A very bright soul, perhaps overflow it slightly. Orren had, in his career, encountered four souls that had overflowed significantly. He had documented all four with considerable excitement. He still talked about the third one at guild dinners. This child's soul had eaten the room.

He cleared his throat and tried to read what was readable. The structure of the script was unlike anything in his reference texts — and he had read every reference text, including the ones kept in the restricted archive that required two senior scholars and a signed declaration of professional necessity to access. Most scripts were linear, winding from left to right in the manner of a sentence. Some circular scripts existed, associated historically with certain bloodlines from the eastern kingdoms. Occasionally a double-helix configuration appeared, indicating exceptional magical potential.

This script was not linear. It was not circular. It was layered — stratum upon stratum of script stacked atop one another like geological sediment, each layer slightly different in character, in colour, in what Orren could only describe as age. The deepest layer, barely visible beneath the rest, pulsed a different rhythm from the others — slower, steadier, like something that had been beating for much longer than seven years.

He wrote this down very carefully. Then he wrote it down again, in different words, to make sure he had not made an error. Then he sat very still for a moment.

"May I ask you something?" he said to the child.

"Yes," said the child, with that same unnerving patience.

"Do you dream?"

The boy's eyes moved to him — gold-flecked in the light of his own soul-script, which Orren found deeply unsettling. He considered the question with genuine seriousness. "Yes," he said at last. "But not about things that happen. About places I haven't been."

"What kind of places?"

"Dark ones," the boy said simply. "And fires. And people I know but don't remember meeting."

Orren filed his report that evening. It was the longest report he had ever written, and also, he suspected, the most important, and he was not at all certain that anything would be done about it, because in his experience, reports about important things were the least likely to be acted upon promptly.

He was correct about this. The report sat in the Valdenmere Academy's intake queue for six weeks before a junior archivist categorised it under Anomalous Readings — Low Priority and moved it to the secondary archive. It would remain there for nine years, untouched, until a young White Mage student named Liera Ashveil chose it as the subject of her thesis on Soul-Script Variance in Exceptional Individuals.

She would read it three times before writing her first note. Her first note would simply say: This should have been Priority One.

Her second note, written after a sleepless night, would say something else entirely — something she would scratch out before anyone could read it, so thoroughly that the paper tore.

The boy's name, at that time, was Kaito Rein, and he was seven years old, and he walked home from the Academy examination through the autumn streets of Cresthold with his father's hand around his and a paper bag of roasted chestnuts they had bought from the market stall outside the gate, and he was not thinking about soul-scripts or scholars or the strange breathing light that had made the room smell faintly of warm iron.

He was thinking about the dream he'd had the night before — the one with the black corridor and the door that glowed at its edges — because it had been different this time. There had been voices behind the door. He hadn't been able to hear the words, but he had understood the feeling underneath them, the way you sometimes understand weather before you can see it.

The feeling was: we are almost there.

And then another feeling, fainter, like a different instrument playing beneath the first: I am sorry.

"Papa," he said.

"Mm?"

"What does it mean when you dream about a place that isn't real but you know exactly how it smells?"

His father was a blacksmith — a broad, easy-mannered man who trusted in the reality of things he could touch and was perpetually gentle about the existence of things he couldn't. He thought about this for a moment, which Kaito appreciated. Adults who answered immediately were usually answering a different question than the one you'd asked.

"I think," his father said finally, "it means the place is real. Just not where you've been yet."

Kaito ate a chestnut and considered this. The autumn light was orange and low. The street smelled of woodsmoke and the particular muddy sweetness of Cresthold in October. A dog slept in a doorway. Somewhere nearby, someone was singing very badly and very happily.

He thought: I want to remember this.

It was an unusual thought for a seven-year-old — the deliberate act of noticing a moment and deciding to keep it. But something in him, something that ran deeper than seven years and had no name yet, understood instinctively that the ordinary world was worth preserving. That the singing and the dog and the orange light and his father's large warm hand were not nothing. That they were, in fact, everything.

 SOUL-SCRIPT RECORD:

From the field notes of Scholar Orren Dast, Valdenmere Academy, Year 412 of the Third Compact:

The deepest stratum of this child's script does not match his age. It matches no age I can account for. If I were to estimate by script-depth alone, without the presence of the child in front of me, I would date this soul at somewhere between several decades and several centuries old. I am aware of how this sounds. I have checked my instruments twice and my own sobriety once and stand by the observation. Whatever this child is carrying, it did not begin with him.

The report sat in the archive.

Kaito ate the last chestnut.

His father swung their joined hands once, twice, the way he had done since Kaito was small enough to be lifted, a private language between them that meant nothing in particular and everything in general.

Above the rooftops of Cresthold, the first stars were appearing. Kaito looked up at them — as he always did, as he would always do — with the specific feeling of someone recognising a view they have seen from the other side.

He did not know what that meant yet.

He would. In time — in a great deal of time, in two different lives lived in two different worlds — he would understand exactly what it meant to look at the sky and feel the sky looking back.

But for now he was seven, and the chestnuts were good, and his father's hand was warm.

And that was enough. For now, that was more than enough.
