Chapter 6 - Chapter 4: The Return of Adrian Blake

Emma Carter stood beside the dark water of Blackwood Lake, gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned pale. The cold wind brushed against her face, carrying the faint scent of wet earth and old memories.

Her heart was still racing.

She stared at the last message glowing on her screen.

Tomorrow. Blackwood Lake. 7 PM.

A chill ran down her spine.

She swallowed hard, trying to calm the storm inside her chest.

She wasn't sure if her heart was beating this fast because of fear…

or because of Adrian.

Adrian Blake.

The name alone felt like a ghost rising from the past.

Emma slowly looked across the lake. The water was dark and still, reflecting the pale moonlight like a mirror hiding secrets beneath its surface.

Five years ago, everything had changed here.

Her life.

Her friendship.

Her trust.

Everything.

She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to push the memories away. But memories had a cruel way of returning when you least wanted them.

Suddenly—

Buzz.

Her phone vibrated in her hand.

Emma's eyes snapped open.

Another message.

Her chest tightened as she opened it.

Unknown Number

You came.

Emma's fingers trembled slightly.

Who are you? she typed quickly.

A few seconds passed.

The wind rustled through the trees behind her.

Then the reply came.

Someone who knows what you did.

Emma's stomach dropped.

Her heart began pounding louder.

I didn't do anything, she replied.

Even as she sent the message, she knew it sounded like a lie.

The phone buzzed again.

Still lying, Emma?

Another message followed.

Even after five years?

Emma's breathing grew uneven.

Five years.

Whoever this person was… they knew exactly when everything happened.

Her fingers moved again.

What do you want from me?

This time, the response took longer.

The silence around the lake grew heavier.

Even the wind seemed to slow down.

Finally—

Buzz.

A new message appeared.

The truth.

Emma clenched her jaw.

About what?

The reply came in three short words.

Adrian Blake.

Her heart skipped a beat.

She stared at the screen.

Adrian Blake.

The one name she had tried to erase from her mind.

Adrian left town, she typed.

Everyone knows that.

The phone vibrated immediately.

No, Emma.

A second message appeared.

He didn't.

Emma felt the ground beneath her feet shift.

Her pulse raced.

What are you talking about?

The typing dots appeared.

Then stopped.

Then appeared again.

Finally the message arrived.

Turn around.

Emma froze.

Her heart slammed violently in her chest.

Slowly… very slowly… she turned her head.

The road behind the lake was dimly lit by a single flickering streetlamp.

For a moment, she saw nothing.

Then—

A shadow moved.

A tall figure stepped forward from the darkness.

Emma's breath caught in her throat.

The man walked closer, his footsteps slow and steady against the gravel path.

With every step, the light revealed more of his face.

Dark hair.

Sharp jawline.

Familiar eyes.

Emma's entire body went cold.

"No…" she whispered.

It couldn't be.

Her mind refused to accept it.

But her eyes couldn't deny what they were seeing.

The man stopped only a few feet away from her.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The wind blew harder across the lake, rippling the black water.

Then the man finally spoke.

His voice was low.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Hello, Emma."

Emma's world seemed to stop.

That voice.

She would recognize it anywhere.

Her lips trembled.

"Adrian…?"

The man looked at her quietly.

The same deep eyes she remembered stared back at her.

Adrian Blake.

Alive.

Standing right in front of her.

Emma felt her knees weaken.

"But… you… you left," she whispered.

Adrian let out a soft, bitter laugh.

"Did I?"

Emma's mind spun wildly.

None of this made sense.

"Everyone said you moved away," she said.

Adrian's expression darkened.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe."

Emma's heart pounded.

"They?" she asked.

Adrian looked toward the dark forest behind the lake.

His voice dropped lower.

"The people who have been watching you."

Emma felt a sudden chill run through her body.

Watching… her?

"What are you talking about?" she asked nervously.

Before Adrian could answer—

Buzz.

Emma's phone vibrated again.

Both of them looked down at the screen.

Another message.

From the same unknown number.

Emma slowly opened it.

Her blood ran cold.

Nice reunion.

Her hands began shaking.

Another message appeared.

We told you we were watching.

Emma looked up quickly, her eyes scanning the dark trees around the lake.

The shadows suddenly felt alive.

"Adrian…" she whispered.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"They're here."

Emma's heart raced.

"Who are they?" she asked.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked directly into her eyes.

His voice became serious.

"Emma… the secret we tried to bury five years ago—"

Before he could finish—

A loud crack echoed from the forest.

Both of them turned toward the sound.

Something was moving in the darkness.

More than one person.

Branches snapped.

Footsteps approached.

Emma's heart nearly stopped.

She grabbed Adrian's arm.

"What is that?"

Adrian's expression turned grim.

"They found us."

Emma's voice shook.

"Who did?"

Adrian looked toward the trees again.

Then he said the words that made Emma's blood freeze.

"The strangers who know your secret."

Another branch snapped.

The shadows began moving closer.

Emma's heart pounded wildly in her chest.

Because suddenly she realized something terrifying.

She and Adrian were no longer alone.

Someone else was here.

Watching them.

Waiting.

And whatever was coming out of the darkness…

knew everything.

To be continued…
