Chapter 36 - The Price of Peace

The Shadow Wolf stood in all his glory.

Silent.

Motionless.

Unable to act.

The sea breeze moved through his dark fur as he stared at Campbell. Every instinct inside him screamed to fight, to tear through the soldiers standing behind the commander, to reclaim his child and disappear into the wilderness forever.

Yet he knew better.

He knew there was only one choice.

Only one path that could keep his people alive.

Slowly, he took a step forward.

Then another.

The soldiers immediately tensed, their weapons rising instinctively.

Campbell simply watched.

Then, to everyone's surprise, the Shadow Wolf lowered himself.

His front legs bent.

His head lowered toward the earth.

Not in defeat.

Not in surrender.

But as a declaration.

A promise.

A statement of how far he was willing to go to protect those he loved.

The gesture spoke louder than words ever could.

He accepted.

Campbell's smile widened.

Relief washed over him.

For the first time since arriving at the village, he felt truly satisfied.

There would be no battle today.

No unnecessary bloodshed.

No fight to the death.

Most importantly...

He would not have to kill Tiza.

At least not yet.

"Good," Campbell said quietly.

"Very good, my boy."

There was genuine excitement in his voice.

Years of searching.

Years of questions.

Years of theories.

And now the answer stood before him.

Alive.

Breathing.

Obedient.

Everything was falling into place.

As if rewarding him for his decision, Campbell carefully stepped closer and lowered the sleeping child toward the Shadow Wolf.

Only for a moment.

Only long enough for Tiza to see her.

To smell her.

To know she was alive.

The infant remained asleep, peaceful and unaware of the sacrifice being made for her future.

For a brief second, Tiza stared.

His glowing eyes softened.

The scent of his daughter filled his senses.

His child.

His blood.

His future.

Then Campbell pulled her back into his arms.

Whether it was an act of kindness or a demonstration of control, Tiza could not tell.

Perhaps it was both.

Campbell knew exactly what he was doing.

He always did.

Turning toward his men, Campbell gave another order.

"Chain him."

The soldiers hesitated.

Several exchanged nervous glances.

Even now, standing this close to the creature, they were terrified.

But an order was an order.

Slowly, they approached.

A massive iron collar was brought forward, large enough to fit around the Shadow Wolf's neck.

Heavy chains followed.

The soldiers attached them carefully, their hands trembling throughout the process.

Everyone present understood the truth.

The chains were meaningless.

If Tiza wished to break them, he could.

If he chose violence, no amount of iron would stop him.

The restraints were merely a symbol.

A display.

A reminder that he now walked under Campbell's authority.

And surprisingly, Tiza allowed it.

Without resistance.

Without protest.

Without a growl.

The soldiers quickly retreated once the task was completed.

None wished to remain close for longer than necessary.

Campbell chuckled softly.

Satisfied.

The mission was complete.

He finally possessed everything he needed.

The people.

The knowledge.

The mystery.

And most importantly...

The Shadow Wolf.

Though many questions still remained unanswered, Campbell had obtained enough to begin.

Enough to move forward.

Enough to change the future.

As the morning sun climbed higher into the sky, preparations continued.

The prisoners were secured.

Supplies were loaded.

Weapons were accounted for.

Every surviving member of the expedition was brought aboard.

Before long, the final orders were given.

The anchors were lifted.

The ropes were released.

The sails unfurled against the ocean wind.

Slowly, the great ship began to move.

Standing upon the deck, the Shadow Wolf watched the shoreline disappear into the distance.

The forests. The mountains. The land that held Lara. The home he might never see again.

He remained silent. But deep within him, a promise was made.No matter where this journey led.No matter what Campbell intended. No matter what he would have to become.

One day.He would return.

And when that day came, he would reclaim everything that had been taken from him.

As the ship sailed toward the horizon, neither Campbell nor Tiza knew that the fate of kingdoms, armies, and generations had already begun to shift.

The journey had started.

And there would be no turning back.
