KAEL'S POV
The forest was too quiet.
Not the calm silence of sleeping animals or rustling leaves.
This silence was heavy… suffocating… like the entire night was waiting for something terrible to happen.
I stood in the middle of the ruined ritual ground, my sword still wet with the blood of the guards I had cut down minutes ago.
The iron scent hung thick in the air.
But it wasn't the blood that held my attention. It was her.
Ariya stood in the center of the shattered ritual circle, glowing faintly under the moonlight.
The sacred stones that once surrounded her had been blasted apart, scattered across the ground like broken teeth.
Her body radiated power.
Not wolf energy. Not Alpha strength. Something else. Something older. Something that made even my wolf uneasy.
Around us, the warriors who had gathered to watch her execution were now kneeling in the dirt.
None of them dared look directly at her.
None of them dared move.
And I… the Alpha's executioner… the man who had killed hundreds without hesitation…
I couldn't stop staring.
Her eyes were no longer brown.
They were silver. Bright and terrifying. Like the moon itself had settled inside her gaze.
She turned slowly toward me.
The air shifted when she moved.
My chest tightened as the mate bond pulsed violently between us.
It had snapped into existence earlier that night when I found her bleeding at the edge of the forest.
The moment our eyes met, I had known. She was mine. My mate.
And the moon had chosen the worst possible woman for me.
Because everyone knew the rumor surrounding me.
Kael the Executioner.
The Alpha's Hound. The man whose mates never survived.
Ariya's glowing eyes searched my face. "If I lose myself…" she whispered.
Her voice sounded strange, echoing softly as if the wind carried it in two directions at once.
My grip tightened around my sword.
She took a slow step closer.
The ground beneath her feet cracked slightly.
"If I lose myself…" she repeated.
Her silver gaze locked with mine.
"Will you kill me?" The question struck harder than any blade.
For the first time in years… I didn't know what to say.
I had spent my entire life obeying orders.
Kill the rogue.
Kill the traitor.
Kill the enemy.
And I had never hesitated.
But this…
This was different. The bond between us burned inside my chest like fire.
I slowly lowered my sword.
The warriors around us shifted nervously, whispering under their breath.
I could feel their eyes on me.
Waiting.
Wondering if the Alpha's executioner would do what he was born to do.
Kill the monster.
But I couldn't.
I sheathed my sword.
The metal slid back into place with a quiet sound that seemed louder than thunder in the silent forest.
"If you lose control," I said quietly,
"I won't kill you."
Ariya's brows furrowed slightly.
Her voice trembled, though the terrifying power around her did not.
"You don't know that."
I shook my head slowly.
"No."
I stepped closer to her.
The closer I got, the stronger the bond burned between us.
Painful.
Unavoidable.
"But I know this," I continued.
"You won't face it alone."
She stared at me like she was trying to understand whether I was brave… or stupid.
"What will you do then?" she asked softly.
The moonlight reflected in her silver eyes.
I stopped only inches away from her. Close enough to feel the heat radiating from her skin.
Close enough to hear the uneven rhythm of her breathing.
"I'll drag you back," I said.
My voice came out rougher than I expected.
"Even if I have to fight the moon itself." For a moment…
The power around her flickered.
Her expression softened slightly.
And the violent tension in the air eased.
But the moment shattered almost instantly.
A slow clap echoed from the edge of the clearing.
Clap.
Clap.
Clap.
Every muscle in my body tensed.
I turned sharply toward the sound.
The Luna Mother stepped out from the shadows.
Her silver robes brushed against the forest floor as she walked, untouched by the dirt and blood scattered around us.
Behind her stood dozens of warriors.
More than before.
And at their head…
The Alpha.
My Alpha.
His cold gaze settled on me first.
Then on Ariya.
"So," the Luna Mother said smoothly, her voice dripping with amusement.
"The executioner betrays his master."
My hand instinctively moved toward my sword again.
The Alpha spoke next.
His voice was calm.
Too calm. "You were given one order, Kael."
His eyes hardened.
"Kill the girl."
The warriors around him shifted, waiting for my response.
I didn't kneel.
Didn't bow.
Didn't move.
"I refuse."
The gasps around us were immediate.
No one refused the Alpha.
No one.
The Luna Mother's smile widened.
"How touching," she said mockingly.
Her gaze slid toward Ariya.
"Tell me, child…"
She tilted her head slightly.
"Do you know how your mother died?"
Ariya's silver eyes narrowed.
"You killed her."
The Luna Mother laughed softly.
"Oh no."
Her finger lifted slowly… pointing directly at me.
"He did."
The world seemed to stop.
I felt Ariya's gaze snap toward me.
Confusion.
Shock.
Pain.
I clenched my jaw but said nothing.
The Luna Mother's voice rang out across the clearing.
"Years ago, a rogue woman tried to steal something sacred from the pack."
Her smile sharpened.
"The Alpha sent his best executioner to deal with her."
My chest tightened.
"And Kael," she continued sweetly,
"never fails his orders."
Ariya's power flickered violently.
Cracks spread across the ground beneath her feet.
"You're lying," she whispered.
But I stayed silent.
Because I knew the truth.
The Luna Mother took another step forward.
"And the most tragic part?"
Her voice softened cruelly.
"Your dear mate didn't even know she was pregnant when he killed her."
The moon above us darkened behind a drifting cloud.
A sudden storm wind tore through the forest.
Ariya's power exploded outward.
Warriors were thrown off their feet as the ground split apart.
She rose slightly above the earth, her glowing form blazing with silver light.
Her eyes burned with rage.
And for the first time in years…
I felt fear crawl up my spine.
Not because of what she was becoming.
But because I knew the Luna Mother was telling the truth.
Years ago, I had followed an order.
I had killed a rogue woman.
I had never asked questions.
Never hesitated. And now…
I was staring into the eyes of the daughter she left behind.
My mate.
And the monster the moon had been hiding from the world.
