The Ring She Purchased
Each time the people around her dismissed the anomalies she experienced as mere figments of her imagination, she felt the very contours of reality becoming a little less distinct. It was not simply loneliness or anxiety. Rather, it was an inexplicable sensation of being quietly excluded from the structure of the world itself. Gradually, she came to understand that nothing could drive a person to the brink more relentlessly than a conviction no one else was willing to share.
The first thing that made her uneasy was something utterly trivial. Her smartphone connection became unstable, videos kept buffering, and phone calls were repeatedly interrupted. Such things happened to everyone, yet she could not bring herself to believe they were coincidences. Each time it happened, an inexplicable certainty welled up from somewhere deep within her body: something was interfering.
She tried to explain her concerns to those around her. Perhaps the signal was weak. Perhaps something abnormal was happening. But all she received in response were vague chuckles and casual dismissals. Eventually, no one took her seriously anymore.
At that point, the direction of her suspicions shifted, turning away from the outside world and inward. Perhaps the problem did not lie in her surroundings, she began to think, but somewhere in a realm beyond ordinary perception.
She discovered it while searching the internet late one night. An advertisement displayed deep within the screen matched her thoughts with an unnatural degree of precision. Its phrases seemed almost to suggest that someone had read her mind: "Blocks electromagnetic waves" and "Protects you from external interference."
In that instant, she felt as though she had found salvation. Without the slightest hesitation, she completed the purchase.
When it arrived several days later, the object was astonishingly simple. It was nothing more than a ring made from crudely bent wire, something that looked less like a commercial product than a child's craft project. Yet she was not disappointed. If anything, its stark, unadorned appearance inspired an inexplicable sense of trust.
Perhaps it lay outside established frameworks precisely because it had nothing scientific about it. Repeating this to herself almost as a form of self-persuasion, she began carrying it with her everywhere.
After she started keeping the ring close, her anxiety temporarily subsided. Her communications seemed more stable, and the background noise around her appeared to diminish. Whether these were actual changes or simply a sense of reassurance brought about by distorted perception, the distinction had already become impossible for her to make. Whatever the truth, she had acquired the feeling that she was being protected.
But the stability did not last.
The first anomaly was a black fluctuation that appeared at the edge of her vision. It resembled smoke, yet seemed liquid as well. It had no definite shape, and yet she could unmistakably perceive that something was there.
Whenever she turned to look at it, it vanished. Whenever she looked away, it reappeared. It persisted far too long to be dismissed as a simple optical illusion. At times, it even seemed to possess an intention of its own.
Before long, it began to take shape.
A viscous black mass, sticky as tar, crawled across the floor, crept along the walls, and spread across the ceiling. Countless eyes emerged from its surface. They never blinked. They simply stared at her without interruption.
Their number was never constant. They appeared and disappeared, increasing and diminishing, yet the eyes were always somewhere within her field of vision.
She fled.
Beneath the bright fluorescent lights of the police station, she desperately tried to explain what was happening. Something was pursuing her. She was being watched. Whatever it was, it was not human.
But her words lacked coherence, and the expression of terror twisting her face only emphasized her instability rather than making her account convincing. In the end, what she received was not understanding, but a referral: a formal piece of paper recommending that she seek psychiatric care.
Even so, her conviction did not waver.
If anything, each denial made the existence of the thing more firmly established in her mind, allowing it to encroach further upon the boundary between her inner world and the outside reality. Her hand tightened around the ring with increasing force. The pain of the wire digging into her finger was the only thing that could still, however tenuously, anchor her to reality.
One afternoon, in the middle of the day, sunlight illuminated the room evenly. A peaceful stillness prevailed, as though nothing abnormal had ever existed there.
She lay down on her bed, swallowed the prescribed tranquilizer, and slowly closed her eyes. For that brief moment, it seemed as though everything was receding into the distance.
But the silence was merely a prelude to the intrusion.
The presence arrived without a sound.
The shadows on the floor deepened. The air grew slightly viscous, and the temperature dropped unnaturally. Something was unquestionably there inside her bedroom.
The tar-like entity had come.
This time, it was not a fragmentary hallucination, appearing and disappearing as it had before. It had assumed its complete form and was now undeniably present in the room.
Countless eyes fixed upon her all at once.
She did not wake.
Or perhaps she could no longer wake.
Only the wire ring remained, clenched tightly in her hand.
No one has seen her since.
Her friends eventually noticed that they could no longer contact her, and her parents searched desperately for her whereabouts. Yet not a single trace of her could be found.
Everything in her room remained exactly as it had been, bearing the undisturbed signs of everyday life. There was no evidence of a struggle. The only unusual object was a slightly misshapen wire ring lying on her bed.
To this day, she remains officially classified as missing.
