Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6 — AWAKENING DAY

Chapter 6 — Awakening Day

Ashvale woke before the sun did.

Lantern light still glowed faintly through windows while villagers filled the streets leading toward the central shrine. Cold morning mist drifted low across the ground, curling around boots and stone paths as nervous conversations spread through the village like wildfire.

Awakening Day had arrived.

For most people, it was the single most important day of their lives.

The day the Prime Nexus judged them.

The day they either stepped onto the path of a Dominator—

or remained ordinary forever.

Zero walked silently beside Klaus through the crowd.

The village felt different today.

Louder.

Tighter.

Everywhere he looked, people carried expectations in their eyes.

Hope.

Fear.

Pride.

Desperation.

Children his age stood near their families wearing formal clothes while parents gave last-minute encouragements.

"...just stay calm..."

"...guide the essence slowly..."

"...your father awakened fire too..."

"...even a basic affinity is enough..."

Klaus shoved his hands into his pockets casually.

"Everyone looks like they're about to die."

"They might."

Klaus snorted.

"You really know how to improve a mood."

Zero ignored him.

His eyes drifted toward the shrine ahead.

Ancient white pillars surrounded a circular stone platform covered in glowing runic patterns. At the center floated several pale blue crystals above a basin of water.

Fusion Stones.

The closer Zero got—

the stranger they felt.

Like something inside him instinctively rejected them.

His scars prickled faintly beneath his sleeves.

He looked away.

Near the shrine stood Elder Rowan.

The village chief's presence alone carried weight.

Tall despite his age, broad-shouldered, with greying hair tied behind his back and sharp eyes that missed very little.

Peak Mortal Rank Dominator.

The strongest person in Ashvale.

Known as the living flame

The villagers quieted gradually as Rowan stepped forward.

His gaze swept across the gathered youths calmly.

"Today," he began, "you stand before the Prime Nexus."

His deep voice echoed clearly through the shrine.

"The Nexus is the will of Nyxara itself. Through the Fusion Stones, it will connect to your soul and awaken your essence."

Several younger children listened with open fascination.

Rowan continued calmly.

"Once awakened, your body and soul will undergo qualitative evolution. You will step beyond ordinary humanity and enter the Mortal Rank."

The atmosphere grew heavier.

Everyone understood what that meant.

Strength.

Status.

Survival.

The world belonged to Dominators.

Not ordinary people.

"You are not forcing power into yourselves," Rowan said. "You are opening yourselves to the Nexus. Whether it answers... depends on your talent, soul, and destiny."

Klaus leaned toward Zero slightly.

"So basically the world decides if you're worthy."

"Something like that."

"Sounds arrogant."

"It is."

The ceremony began shortly afterward.

One by one, candidates stepped toward the shrine.

Each sat cross-legged before a Fusion Stone before slowly entering meditation.

The process wasn't immediate.

Awakening took time.

The candidate had to guide the dormant essence within their body toward the crystal and establish resonance with the Prime Nexus.

Some failed quickly.

Others took several minutes.

The first successful awakening happened nearly ten minutes later.

A pale green glow spread across the Fusion Stone as wind stirred violently around the boy sitting before it.

His body trembled slightly.

Essence surged through his veins.

Then suddenly—

his eyes snapped open.

The air around him felt sharper somehow.

Alive.

Before him, a faint translucent blue screen materialized.

Status Window.

The crowd erupted into excited whispers immediately.

"He did it—"

"He awakened—"

The boy stared at the floating screen in shock before laughing breathlessly.

Even from a distance, Zero could faintly make out the glowing words.

[ PRIME NEXUS STATUS ]

Name: Daren Holt

Rank: Mortal Rank — low stage

Affinity: Wind-(common)

Essence Capacity: Low

Soul Stability: Stable

The screen vanished moments later.

The boy looked completely overwhelmed.

Different.

The change after awakening was subtle physically—

but undeniable.

His body had evolved.

More candidates followed afterward.

Fire.

Stone.

Water.

Metal.

Most awakenings were ordinary.

But ordinary was enough.

Ordinary meant a future.

Zero watched quietly from the back while candidate after candidate succeeded.

Every successful awakening made something inside him tighten further.

Because he still couldn't sense essence.

Not even faintly.

Most children sensed traces years before awakening.

Zero had nothing.

Nothing at all.

Klaus noticed immediately.

"You'll awaken."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

Zero glanced at him briefly.

Klaus wasn't joking.

That somehow made things worse.

Eventually—

"Klaus."

Klaus stretched lazily before walking toward the shrine.

Unlike everyone else—

he looked excited.

He sat cross-legged before the Fusion Stone and closed his eyes.

Silence gradually spread across the shrine.

Seconds passed.

Then minutes.

At first—

nothing happened.

Then suddenly—

the Fusion Stone pulsed violently.

A deep crimson glow spread through the crystal as pressure burst outward from Klaus' body.

Several villagers stepped backward instinctively.

The air itself felt heavier.

Wilder.

For one brief second—

something massive appeared behind Klaus.

A shadow.

Monstrous.

Ancient.

Watching.

Then it vanished instantly.

The shrine fell silent.

Even Elder Rowan narrowed his eyes slightly now.

Interesting.

Klaus' body trembled faintly as essence flooded through him.

Then suddenly—

his eyes opened.

Crimson energy flickered briefly around his pupils before disappearing.

A translucent blue screen appeared before him.

[ PRIME NEXUS STATUS ]

Name: Klaus

Rank: Mortal Rank — low stage

Affinity: [ HIDDEN ]

Essence Capacity: High

Soul Stability: Exceptional

The screen vanished.

Klaus blinked once.

"...Huh."

Several villagers stared at him uneasily.

Not because they knew his affinity—

but because they felt something wrong during the awakening.

Something predatory.

Klaus slowly stood before looking directly toward Zero.

Then he grinned.

Like success had always been obvious.

Zero looked away first.

Because deep down—

he already knew.

Klaus had crossed a line today.

A door had opened for him.

And Zero still stood outside it.

More awakenings followed.

The sun climbed higher.

Hours passed.

Then finally—

"Zero."

The whispers began almost immediately.

"...scarred boy..."

"...never sensed essence..."

"...still nothing..."

"...poor kid..."

Zero ignored them and walked toward the shrine calmly.

But the closer he got—

the more his scars burned.

A faint heat spread beneath his skin.

Uncomfortable.

Wrong.

He sat before the Fusion Stone silently and closed his eyes.

Stillness.

Breathing slow.

Controlled.

He reached inward.

Searching for essence.

Searching for anything.

Nothing answered him.

Then suddenly—

something moved.

Cold.

Ancient.

Wrong.

The moment he tried guiding it toward the Fusion Stone—

Pain exploded through his skull.

Zero's body tensed violently.

A boy dragged by chains, cover in blood.

Him screaming and being whipped by the guards.

Golden eyes staring down at him.

His scars burned like fire beneath his clothes.

The Fusion Stone flickered erratically.

Cracks spread faintly across its surface.

Elder Rowan's eyes widened immediately.

Then—

everything stopped.

The crystal dimmed completely.

Silence.

No resonance.

No connection.

The Prime Nexus had not answered.

Zero slowly opened his eyes.

The entire shrine watched quietly.

Awkwardly.

Nobody spoke at first.

Then the whispers returned.

"...nothing..."

"...not even resonance..."

"...failed..."

Klaus stepped forward immediately.

"Shut up."

The crowd quieted.

Zero stood slowly.

His face remained calm.

Blank.

But internally—

something felt hollow.

For a brief moment, Elder Rowan stared directly into Zero's eyes.

Frowning slightly.

Because for just one second—

when the Fusion Stone cracked—

he thought he felt something looking back through the Nexus itself.

Something vast.

Then it vanished.

Zero stepped away from the shrine without a word.

And the ceremony continued behind him—

as though nothing had happened.
