Chapter 56 - CHAPTER 57: The Math of a Broken Mind

To understand the collapse of the Giant, one must understand how the human mind survives trauma.

For twenty-six years, Bilal's brain had been running on a terrifying engine of adrenaline and hyper-vigilance. He was the Father. He was the Jarl. He had to be perfect, because if he made a mistake, people died. He had locked all his fear, his exhaustion, and his grief into a tight, heavy box in his chest.

When Olaf's sword came down, Bilal finally let go of the box. He allowed himself to rest.

When the Envoy stopped the sword, Bilal's brain could not pick the box back up. The hinges were broken. The mechanism had snapped.

They threw him into the dark, freezing hull of a merchant cog sailing South. He was chained to the wooden ribs of the ship. They gave him water and hard bread.

For the first two weeks, Bilal did not speak. He did not fight the chains. He didn't even move to protect himself from the rats.

In modern 2026, psychologists call this Dissociation and Catatonia. The brain experiences trauma so severe that it simply disconnects from the body to protect itself from the pain.

To the mercenary guards, the Giant looked like he was plotting. They were terrified of him. They whispered that he was using dark magic to break the iron.

But inside Bilal's mind, there was no magic. There was only a broken loop of mathematics.

"One thousand people," Bilal thought, staring blankly at the rotting wood of the ship's hull. "Twenty percent escaped. Eight hundred died. Eight hundred. Runa is gone. Astrid is gone. They are in the cold. Eight hundred dead. The cement was 10% lime, 20% ash. It failed. The gate failed. I failed."

He looked at his massive hands. The hands that had forged steel and delivered babies. They were shaking uncontrollably. He couldn't stop them. The nervous system that had made him a flawless kickboxer was completely fried. He had "Survivor's Guilt." He hated his own lungs for taking in air while the orphans he swore to protect were buried in the mud of Axiomra.

He didn't want to escape. He wanted to be punished.
