Chapter 19 - The Trail of Shadows.

The northern border of the Crescent Moon territory stretched across a thick section of forest where the trees grew taller and the ground sloped gently toward a winding stream. Morning sunlight struggled to reach the forest floor in this part of the land because the branches above formed a dense canopy that allowed only thin rays of light to slip through. The air felt cooler here, and the quiet seemed deeper, as though the woods themselves were watching carefully for any disturbance.

Seraphina walked beside Kael along the narrow path that led toward the place where the scout had discovered the strange tracks. Dorian and Lucien followed close behind while several warriors moved ahead to ensure the area remained secure. The forest smelled of damp earth and moss, yet beneath those familiar scents Seraphina detected something else lingering faintly in the air.

The scent was unfamiliar.

It carried a trace of magic.

Her wolf instincts stirred uneasily.

Kael noticed the change in her expression immediately.

"You sense something," he said quietly.

Seraphina nodded slowly.

"There is magic here," she replied. "Not strong but very deliberate."

Dorian glanced toward the trees with thoughtful interest.

"Then whoever entered your territory was not simply wandering through the forest."

Lucien's gaze moved calmly across the surrounding woods.

"They came for a reason."

The scout who had first discovered the tracks stopped near the edge of a small clearing and pointed toward the ground. The earth there was softer because of the nearby stream, leaving clear impressions where someone had stepped during the night.

Kael crouched down to examine them carefully.

"These prints are not from a wolf," he said after a moment.

Seraphina stepped closer and looked at the marks herself. They were shaped like human footprints yet something about them felt slightly different.

Dorian knelt beside Kael and studied the ground with focused attention.

"The steps are light," he observed. "Whoever made them moves with great control."

Lucien remained standing while watching the forest.

"They also knew how to avoid being followed," he added.

Seraphina frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Lucien pointed toward the trail.

"Notice how the tracks appear clearly here but vanish a few steps later."

Seraphina looked more carefully and realized he was right. The footprints were visible only in the soft soil near the stream. Beyond that point the trail disappeared completely.

"They used magic to hide their path," she said quietly.

Dorian nodded.

"A simple but effective spell."

Kael rose slowly, his expression serious.

"Then we are dealing with someone who understands both stealth and magic."

Seraphina felt a cold unease settle in her chest.

"Could it be someone from another clan?"

Lucien's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Possibly."

Dorian brushed a hand lightly over one of the footprints while concentrating.

For a moment nothing happened.

Then a faint shimmer of energy appeared above the ground like a ghostly echo of the person who had stood there before.

The image lasted only a second before fading.

Dorian exhaled slowly.

"I cannot see their face but I felt their aura," he said.

Seraphina looked at him with anticipation.

"What did it feel like?"

Dorian hesitated briefly.

"Old."

Lucien tilted his head slightly.

"How old?"

Dorian's gaze darkened.

"Older than most witches I have encountered."

Seraphina felt her heartbeat quicken.

"Does that mean they are dangerous?"

Lucien gave a soft amused smile.

"Anyone powerful enough to sneak into a king's territory during the night is dangerous."

Kael folded his arms across his chest while scanning the forest.

"They came close enough to observe us but left before we could track them."

Seraphina looked down at the ground again.

"Maybe they did not want to fight."

Lucien's crimson eyes gleamed faintly.

"Or maybe they were simply gathering information."

The thought sent a ripple of tension through the group.

Kael turned toward the warriors standing nearby.

"I want this entire border watched carefully," he ordered firmly. "No one enters without my knowledge."

The warriors nodded immediately before spreading out along the tree line.

Seraphina stepped toward the stream where the footprints had first appeared. The water moved slowly over smooth stones while sunlight shimmered across the surface like scattered silver.

She knelt and touched the ground lightly.

For a brief moment she felt something unusual.

A faint echo of energy lingered in the soil.

Her magic responded instinctively.

Silver sparks flickered briefly around her fingers as she focused on the feeling.

Suddenly an image flashed through her mind.

A hooded figure standing among the trees.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the vision vanished.

Seraphina pulled her hand back quickly as her heart pounded.

Kael stepped closer.

"What did you see?"

She hesitated before answering.

"A figure wearing a cloak," she said. "I could not see their face."

Dorian studied her carefully.

"Your magic is beginning to connect with the energy around you," he explained.

Lucien watched her with quiet fascination.

"That ability will become very useful."

Seraphina looked back toward the forest where the vision had shown the mysterious watcher.

"Whoever they are they were studying us," she said softly.

Kael's expression remained calm but determined.

"Then we will be ready when they return."

Seraphina stood slowly while the weight of the moment settled around them.

The forest seemed peaceful once again yet she could not ignore the lingering sense that something had changed.

Someone powerful had entered the territory.

Someone who knew exactly what they were looking for.

And now that they had found it the quiet days within the Crescent Moon pack might soon come to an end.
