Chapter 1 Text (Copy this):

The big glass doors of the office flew open. A tall man walked in like he owned the whole world. This was Malakai Thorne. He was rich, he was powerful, and he was very, very rude.

He did not look at the people working. He did not say "Good morning." He only looked at his expensive gold watch. His face was handsome, but it was as cold as ice.

"This place is a mess," Malakai said. His voice was deep and sharp. "Why am I wasting my time here? I should just fire everyone today."

Everyone was scared to look Malakai in the eye. They all looked at the floor. But I did not look down. I stood by the elevator with my bag in my hand. I watched how he treated people like they were nothing. He was the most arrogant man I had ever seen.

Suddenly, his dark eyes turned to me. He didn't look at my face first. He looked at my body from my feet to my head. Then he made a mean face.

"And who is this?" Malakai asked. He walked close to me. He was so big that I felt small. He smelled like expensive perfume and rain.

"I am the artist," I said. I tried to keep my voice steady. "Queen is my name."

"Queen?" Malakai laughed, but it was a mean laugh. "I don't need a queen. I need people who work hard. You are just wasting my space. Move out of my way."

He did not wait for me to move. He walked straight into me, hitting my shoulder hard. He did not say "Sorry." He did not even look back.

"Pick up your things and leave," he shouted as he stepped into the elevator. "I don't like looking at things I cannot use."

The elevator doors started to close. I saw his proud face one last time. My heart was beating fast. I was angry, but I was also feeling a strange heat in my body.

"No," I whispered to myself. I ran to the elevator and stuck my hand between the doors. They slid open again. Malakai looked at me, his eyes wide with surprise.

"I'm not finished with you yet," I said.
